  • Peavey Revalver is the best you're gonna get for under £300. I've realised lately that 99% of POD units just suck balls in terms of clarity and realism.

  • I bet the hd will sound just like the axe fx if he scoops the mids a little more. :D POD HD AND VYPYR TUBE ALL THE FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!!!

  • Axe Fx !!!

  • I liked The POD better and the price is much better. They both sounded very good its a matter of personal taste at this point. The technology is so good that the differences at this point are subtle. This is like comparing The PS3 and The Xbox360 in my opinion. They both get the job done its little personal preferences which make them unique to each individual. Another words its personal choice.

  • teach us your mixing ways !! please

  • Was this recorded direct in with both units?

  • All of Ola's videos the POD sounds way better. The AXE FX is so fizzy sounding

  • to be honest i liked the POD better even tough it's cheaper.

the Axe tone sounds too copmpressed/missing high freq.

dunno if it's the preset or the device itself tough, but for the price difference, POD!

  • Something you guys need to remember is Ola is a mixing master. He could probably make a potato sound good in a mix. All the other tracks really make or break the guitars tone.

  • I have the HD 500 and the sound doesn't sound that "rich" or crisp when I pull that amp up initially. What did you do to get it sounding that good.

    Thanks,

    Xavier

  • Ola, is the sound just the axe fx and the pod hd300 or did you use things like for example external speaker impulses?

  • the majority of sounds created with the axe got this sea-shell-to-the-ear sound. periphery makes it work. gotta give it to the pod hd in this vid though

  • @oskob i was thinking somthing like that i just couldnt explain what until is aw this comment

  • Lube7 Porn Hi69 had me in absolute fits of laughter!!

  • @ColmIncendinall me too

  • Fartal audio ass-fx- Rectumfrier.

  • is their anyway i can get the presets you used for the pod hd, especially the first one?

  • awesom riff *-*

  • Hummm great souding...i record my compos only with my old 95 mesa dual recto 2 channel head and a 2x12 g12t-75 ans a shure sm mic....and it s nice !!!

  • Do you guys recommend a POD Hd bean for a bedrooms guitarist? Only 15 so i cant affoard amp

  • @NorwaysMetalhead I mean i cant affoard axe fx. I have a amp... Damnit

  • @NorwaysMetalhead If you are only 15 and can´t afford a "real Amp" (whatever that might be) you should look more to a used Pod XT/x3 or a Pod 2.0/Pocket POD. Because they are more affordable. ;)

  • @MeFFF I agree that the Pod series is great for the price, but I can honestly say the Pocket Pod is terrible. I would not recommend this to anyone. XD

  • @MeFFF Lol, i wrote wrong. I can absoulutely affoard an AMP but i cant affoard an AXE FX. :p But im a bedroom guitarist and i dont have much space for an amp

  • @NorwaysMetalhead PODs and AXE FX are more meant as professionel Recording Solutions anyway. So If you want just to play in your Bedroom, then maybe a Yamaha TRD or a Roland Cube XL 40 are more useful for you. And soundwise they are all a bit different, but more in the way, that some of them work better for recording and some work better as Bedroom/Practise solution.

  • God fucking bless you!)) Nice work, man!

  • the first shootout with the line 6 treadplate and fractal, i actually think the line6 had more punch. the fractal had a bit too much treble. other than that fractal took the rest

  • I like the Fartal Audio AssFx on the Recto Noob setting the best.

  • Funny thing: POD have more like "American" tone, unlike Axe, which is more "Swedish" to my ear :)

  • hey dude - im recording using pod hd to usb computer and i get staticy sound on guitar tracks - almost like clipping - but my volumes are not clipping - any ideas?

  • @RedneckChexMix

    master limiter maybe?

  • @RedneckChexMix

If you have active pickups sometimes they pick up interference from other electronics such as the computer itself.

  • Comment removed

  • Fartal audio assfx? Lol. Thats great.

  • Can anybody with the 300 model tell me if I can use a graphic EQ? like the one used in Line 6 edit software in the Line 6 XT Live. I mean, an EQ apart from the effects, not one that uses one of the stomp choices

  • i choose pod since its like 1000$ cheaper

  • Also, judging by the two tones at the start of the vid, the axe and pod would compliment each other quite well with one panned hard left and the other right. both are great tools in the right hands

  • Pods are not nearly as bad as most people make them out to be. with the right tweaking and the use of outboard effects in your daw, you can get any pod sounding pretty good, if not as good as the axe fx. Axe fx are great units but to me don't justify their massive price compared to the pod. Even in live applications a tube amp sounds better still, although much less flexible.

  • @jordanzio As an owner of a PODHD500, I can say without a doubt that the reason the AxeFX costs so much more is that it does what the PODs do, but more, and better.

The POD HD is Fine, but you just don't have near the amount of power the AxeFX has, which is obvious, it's over 1000 dollars, it better be better. I will agree that they shouldn't cost as much as they do, Especially the AxeFXII.

  • @jordanzio Every band I've seen running directly into the PA with an AFX/POD has sounded much, much better than those using a regular setup. AAL was really really clear compared to when I saw DT live

  • @jordanzio What's your opinion on amp heads that have an Emulated output jack? such as, say, a Blackstar HT Club 50?

  • The fractile has that shower sound in the back ground that i cant stand. the Hd 500 sounds cleaner but not as punchy. Id love to have a fractile to try out so i could ParaEQ out that frequency.

  • @pazzuzu101 really? i seem to notice more static like noise from the POD tbh.

and @totocaster i have to disagree that you can get the same sound from a POD as the Axe. If didn't know what you were doing with an Axe, you could easily get a sound at the level of a Pod or under, but even if you were POD GOD you couldn't pull off an Axe sound. The Axe has this very distinct metalic, punchy tubey ring that I hear in a lot of Axe recorded stuff and that lacks in lots of POD recorded material.

  • @SASPython I'm not saying that POD is same for less money. Of course AxeFX is much better unit in any way, and because you can drop your impulses in it and do not carry around your MacBook with your POD on live gigs, but POD + external cab-sim gives very comparable and usable tone for metal. It's no crap like other Amp-sim pedals.

  • I'm not a huge fan of metal, but this video never fails to make me want to crush skulls. Fuckin' sick playing and awesome tone!

  • In my opinion the rectifier sound of the Pod sounds better. But I prefer my real amp anyway! :P

  • Comment removed

  • As a matter of fact, axe is closer to the mesa sound.Pod is a bit too bassy, but I care to have a nice tone, not a nice modeler.Pod wins.

  • I use line 6 vetta 2 hd and it totaly kills, crazy fucking tones. The only thing its cant do is a fuzzy creamy extremeley saturated tube overdrive. But for metal its a beast.

  • this kind of death metal or whatever is not really the best song to demo a rig with. why don't you compare this to the sound of a buzzsaw? that would be a better comparison

  • do you have the presets for the line 6?

  • very usefull video...thanks a lot

  • are there any presets available? please respond

  • Hello friend you are so expensive beast, I have a POD HD 500 others enjoyed the sound of HD although the Axe Fx and sound noticeably better, I have little idea of using the EQ HD wonder if you could post this patch that you created on the site of the Line 6 Custom Tone so that I can download and remove my doubts from time to make a sound equal to its excellent ... Hugs!

  • axe fx kicks ass beyond the anus

  • Hey guys, I've done up a similar but more stripped down comparison of the AXE FX Ultra VS a Line 6 HD PRO using internal IR's and Redwirez IR's. Check it out if your interested - Cheers!

  • the line6 "onboard" impulses sound like cock. i bypass them anyway so i would not get an advantage from an axe fx anyway.

  • Ola, you're the man! I have a question... When you did this shootout, did you use 3rd party IR's or the HD's stock amp/cab sims?

  • most important question

    obviously

where can i download the podfarm patch

  • BTW SWEDEN RULES

  • The dual processors inside the axe-fx ultra VS single Digital Sound Processor unit of Line6 HD board. Hell u know which more powerful n closer to the tube preamp character. The price won't lies.. but IDK if axe-fxultra VS line6HD x3 rack pro. I reely wanna hear about both character n which more closer to the tube response n see the result frem comparing both of em. Thanx.

  • man, its so disappointing watching your videos. I keep thinking im going to find a good demo of an amp or in this case a face off between two modelers but then you have such obnoxious backing tracks that i cant hear them

  • @JoshStraitiff aaaaaw how sad that you get to know how well the sound cuts through in a semiprofessional mix, i bet thats not useful at all for anybody watching these vids :D

fearedse, i f*n LOVE your videos man, theyre exactly what ive been looking for for a long time!

  • @Metalwurst666 apparently very poorly. In amp demos it is nice to be able to get a closer listen by hearing just the amp or in this case the amp in general. These crazy backing tracks overpower a lot of the frequencies that you need in order to make a good decision. Maybe in this genre they are mixed well, but this isnt appropriate for a demonstration.

  • @JoshStraitiff man, a metal guitar sound is worthless if it gets overpowered in the mix, no matter how "brutal" it sounds solo. i dont think that you are searching for a brutal metal sound to play one-man-performences with it, do you? :D

  • @Metalwurst666 of course not. These demos he does are fine in regards to demonstrating how it would perform in a band situation or recording situation, even though it is obviously very genre specific. In the case of this video it is expected to hear minute changes in the tone between the two. Having these backing tracks that are so brutal distracts from the point. If anything he should show the tones of the amp and then add in the backing track later in the video.

  • @JoshStraitiff 1:40 here you are.

  • for the people who think the axe fx sounds better cuz of price difference have never played either axe fx or pd hd. the difference in price has little to do with tone. the axe fx sounds a bit more organic yet its still self preference. the axe fx costs way more cuz it offers way more. i personally got the pd hd 500 cuz i dont need any more then that.

  • Lol at the tags.. xDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • Line 6 seems to have more balls. I still prefer my Hughes & Kettner Switchblade.

  • Dollar for dollar the pod wins. Tone wise, axe wins. The axe sounds like a Mesa. The pod sounds like it is very closely imitating one. Too close to justify the thousands of dollars difference. Still prefer axe though

  • I'm pretty sure you can get same sounds on Line 6 POD HD bu scooping some frequencies using EQ.

  • @totocaster id pay to see you try!! rofl im an axe owner myself and honestly if i plugged in to my own corned covered shit i'd end up with the same tones a pod puts out. ;) cheers!!

  • @hamwallet2 It about understanding the theory of sound processing and knowledge. I can get adequate tone even from most disgusting distortion pedal, SS amp and my fingers. Most buzzing part of POD HDs are the cab sims. Try to turn them off and then add Recabinet 3 or another convolution impulse plug-in from you DAW during recording. Result is pretty comparable to Axe-FX sounds and there is no buzzing and fizzing sounds. In general tho, as a package Axe FX is definitely better unit.

  • @totocaster I don't think it's only a matter of frequencies. POD buzzes a lot mainly because it sounds quite fake, expecially compared to the Axe FX. It will be sooooo simple if you could cancel digital artefacts simply employing a low pass filter.

  • @flaviotimpanaro Actually I had a try after commenting.

  • @totocaster haha I just realised people had replied with similar things. I use guitarhacks Cab sims, I've spend probably over 60 hours of inspecting and adjusting my tone, and no matter what I do, I still get that muffled fizz in the background. I had a go at my mates Axe FX Ultra. In a matter minutes I was able to pull off a tone comparable to Periphery's, although still not at that level, but much better than my POD tone.Saying that, with a Cab Sim, PODS still are well worth the money the cost.

  • @totocaster was just thinking that. the POD sounds more a mid rangy, and the Axe Fx just sounds a little more full because of more lo-mids.

  • To me I think they both sound pretty amazing!

  • @Exalle

Agreed, but my bank doesn't break that far at the moment so I guess I will have to do with the Pod HD Pro, I just don't like the fan boy hype over it though and over exaggeration, I like both, they have their own things that make them good, you really can't compare the two, it's all down to personal taste at the end of the day. :)

  • Pod hd

  • Both Have their own strengths and weaknesses, the Pod has great value for money and that is what Line 6 is all about, Fractal's Axe FX has more headroom and realistic amp models but it is far too hyped and overpriced, if the axe fx was made of solid gold only then would I pay that much for it. :)

  • @rythmicpulses1 Granted you can do a lot more on an axe fx than you can on a pod. Hence its price.

  • POD is better

  • axe wins!

  • The Axe 'chops' the Pod... ha...ha ha....

  • How could I get this tone on my POD HD bean?

  • I dig the POD more

  • @dimgrav Its not tight at all, and sounds too digital in this video.

But there are others where the axe seems worse.

    Its about dialling man

  • Clearly AXEFX wins this... but ffs... it's way more expensive..

  • I'm really shocked, and can't believe I'm going to say this, but I like the HD300's tone better than the AxeFx... The AxeFx is too muddy, while the HD300 has a bit too much treble. I'm sure this could be ironed out with an EQ on either units, but the HD300 just sounds like it has more dynamics in your attack. For the price, the HD300 wins.

  • Axe Fx definitely has more headroom but still I would go with the POD as I am not used to that awfully difficult interface of the Axe FX

  • What song is that?

  • Axe has more low mid to mimic the amp but HD has an edge , and sure can cut thru well in the mix

  • Axe sounds better, BUT the margin isn't that great...AND it costs about $2000 more than the POD...which makes the POD, dollar-for-dollar, the hands-down winner in this contest.

  • pod wins

  • I have to say I dig that axe fx's tone more

  • Axe wins.

  • I think the intro sounded better with the POD :S. Nothing wrong with that I guess.

  • DID YOU USE IMPULSES ON THE POD!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?

  • I personally think the axe fx sounds more clear and organic but you really did a good job at making the pod sound really good

  • what are your settings in the pod hd 300? pls

  • Hi !

the difference between Axe Fx and Pod Hd is killer, Axe Fx rape down the line 6's asses...

so... i have a question, i want to record, but im still at school, i dont have money to buy good amps, so

The question is, the Pod Hd is a good choice to record ? or there is another thing to have decent hi gain tones ?

If you could answer me it would be great c:

    Thanks bro !

  • @XEvilCloud i read in one forum that the pod hd hi-gain simulations have actually gotten a bit worse than in the former X3 series. i use a pod x3 and get some decent tones out of it. if you like you can check my channel to take a listen.

  • @XEvilCloud the HD is incredible! It is almost on par with the Axe-fx. I few tweaks here and there and you won't tell the difference. When it comes to live the Axe-fx dominates, but for the price it's the best thing out there

  • @akaciaguitarworks yeah bro, but i tried the hd and it has almost nothing of sustain, and only the uber and the treadplate were good, the fireball was a shit, and i love the sound of power/fire, i tried the Metal Muff of EHX, and it sounded 1000 times better, the top boos sharp the tone and gives you that necrophagist kind of tone.... but anyway, i talked to Corey of trivium about the peavey 6505+ combo version and he said that is good, it has the tone of 5150 so, i thing that i go for it ! c:

  • @XEvilCloud I have the HD500 and with a screamer, compressor and eq you can definitely get GOBS of sustain!

  • @fmdangelo But the compressor looses the dynamic sound :/

and that is whats makes the pod hd better, dynamics

    so

i go for the amp or the metal muff

  • @XEvilCloud YOu have to adjust the compressor settings and you can still get good dynamics...its all good bro!

  • @fmdangelo but i still think that the peavey's 6505+ tone is killer !

  • Do you recorded this by usb ?

  • hey ola just wondering in your personal oppinion what do you think is the best amp to play the pod through

  • its all mishas little posse, theres great gear he has never touched

  • Honestly, to me, the POD's issues vs AxeFx could be solved with a little EQ and some TLC. Never played through an AxeFx, never even seen one in person, but my X3 Live's sound is getting big as fuck with a little bit of tooling around, and that seems to be the major complaint. High pass is your friend with Line6

  • $2000 vs $400

  • @sanjinator17 exactly my point bro, hit the nail on the head as they say

  • lionsgate sounds mean

  • The Axe fits the mix SO much better.

I have a HD500 and really I'm not impressed with the modeling at all. Especially the cabinet simulation.

  • somebody, by them for me, pleeeees=) (sorry fo bad english)

  • i wanna settings for POD =(

  • did you use the guitar hack impulse on the pod hd300 ?

  • why do you put these in the same video? they dont belong within 200 feet of each other

  • I just did a blind test with my guitar playing friends who use good gear, one even has a real Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, and I asked them to point out which one was the POD and which one was the Axe, all got it correct on the first bit of the video. My friend with the Recto described what he thought of the POD's tone quite well, he said it sounded like an over compressed, staticy, distorted transistor radio. His opinion on the Axe, says it sounded pretty damn close. Axe wins in our opinions.

  • @forestofrencho Really? "over compressed, staticy, distorted transistor radio"

    That's real wordy of him.

  • @SparkPlugnl Hey man don't judge my friend, its what he said, he might have been over exaggerating a bit but still. The POD sounds bad in our opinions, end of story.

  • @forestofrencho

What I meant is, those words sound like a "catchphase" ... besides that they hold no water except for "over compressed".

The POD tone is a little muddy, less defined and lacks some mids. On the other hand, the Axe is too dry and overkills on the mids IMO. Yeah, overcompressed may be justified, but "staticy distorted transistor radio" is just words ... it has no meaning in judging this tone.

  • @SparkPlugnl Ok true, I agree with you a bit on the POD, its not as bad as my friend made it sound, but it does sound like there are harsh distortions going on in the POD. I don't agree so much with you on the Axe though, I admit in this mix the Axe sounds a little dry, but the midrange is what helps this cut through the mix. Mids just plain sound good IMHO, scooping is kind of nice, but mids will make the amp breath more.

  • Axe slayed ze pod. Very very tight bottom end which I believe all metal guitarist crave. I know I do.

  • the axe fx definitely has a tighter lower end though which is quite desireable

  • you know i was going to come here and praise the axe fx, but i actually looked away while listening... and the pod sounded really awesome... darn.

  • I can hear that PODness in the midrange, I could tell even when scrolling through the comments and listening only, but it doesn't come off anywhere near as annoying as it used to on the older models.

  • Great recording. Honestly, I can't tell. Sounds like the same basic tone on both, just tweaked differently.

  • Honestly in my opinion the axe fx is great not only with metal but every other genre especially with cleans, it sounds just like a real rig and that emulation is what many people turn to. The processing power and all technical aspects kill the pod especially the axe fx 2 I mean twice the processing power how much more do you need in a pre amp :) No matter what style you play the axe fx sounds beauty and that's what matters most I've seen people try to emulate cleans on the pod it just fails.

  • Comment removed

  • everyone is forgetting the price difference between the hd300 and the axe fx....its pretty astounding

  • Lol line 3 hd 600 :D

  • I don't know if it really sounds like a rectifier, but i like the axe-fx sound better.

  • I used to like the POD more but i realize the AXE has better midrange and a nice roomy sound to it. The POD has that signature fizz which is hard to eliminate, and i own a POD!!! (hey, i admit it's a fun little thing to play around with though sometimes)

  • Axe Fx is waaaayyyyyy better for everything

  • The Axe-FX sounds better... and I just sold my Axe-Fx... :) haha

  • I think you guys are nitpicking this a little bit. Axe FX sounds like it has a little more headroom but really you could make either one sound absolutely amazing in the studio. It's all about the buzz and status because it's expensive. If Misha told you he was going back to Pod there would be 500 ultras on ebay tomorrow.

  • @demonj00 thank you for your words of wisdom ...but seriously you're so right

  • @demonj00 I actually talked to Misha a couple weeks back. He told me that the axe-fx is good but not worth it for at home musicians. I love the axe-fx almost as much as i do the line 6 ux2 or pod HD series. I even gig with my HD500 with a guitarist who uses an axe-fx. Only difference: I had 2 grand extra to buy a custom shop mayones guitar.

  • @demonj00 Isn't that the truth. I'm trying to decide which one I want but I can't find an honest review on the internet because it's overwhelmed with Periphery fanboy bullshit swearing by the Axe FX like it was crafted by god's hands themselves. I wish this djent bullshit would just blow over already and people would realize that Misha is a decent producer and that's about it

  • @barneycockburn dude do a search on POD HD PRO vs AXE FX 2 it's one of Ola Englund's vids. The HD is serious competition to the AXE and it's nearly $2000 cheaper! I'm getting one in a few weeks!

  • While the pod hd tone is decent it could be better if the purpose wasn't to try to get a realistic recto sound. Try mixing amp and even the pre amp models and use an overdrive in front of the "amp" also the 20 ms delay trick thickens it up a lot

  • Eh, both sound great and show that modeling technology has come a long way. Both are different and while the Axe-FX does sound better in many parts (I prefer the sound of the POD for some riffs) it is clearly aimed at a completely different set of customers due to the price tag. You don't expect the same quality from a Recto and a Valveking?

Tell you what, let's compare them head to head when either Fractal Audio comes out with a half grand Axe-FX or Line6 comes out with a 2.5 grand POD HD.

  • i'm not an axe fx fan boy, here's an unbiased opinion from a drummer.

POD sounds like it has a horrible high buzing above it and no mids.

Axe fx sounds way more clear and pronounced.

maybe if you were in killswitch engage you'd go for POD...

    Axe fx wins.

  • Line 6 sounds hollow and scrapey to me. Axe Fx has fuller mid tones and a less scrapy high end. Just opinion i guess

  • hahahaha.. Fartal Audio AssFx - Recto Noob

  • you know what's so awesome about all this? how this really just becomes a matter of personality. each tone is completely personal. personally, i like the Axe better. but i can see why people would like the POD more.

  • I won't say that the pod sound bad or better both both sound are very usable in a recording studio and the fact that the pod hd is only 399$ makes it a steal!

  • The Axe Fx and The POd HD both sound good, just different tools, based on what you can afford, sort of like snap on tools or Sears craftsman wrench's, or whatever, they ALL get the job done in a good way..if you have a good ear,for eq,I'm sure you can get really heavy gnarly tones out of the POD!!!!!WHY argue about stupid meaningless sh*t??????BUy what you like....

  • the pod sounds horrible.. the axe fx is ehhhhh.. real mesas are obviously where its at.. why buy something thats TRYING to be a tube amp at 2000 bucks when you can get the real mesa for 1800 bucks lol never made sense to me.. even the digital effects are bleehhh.. tube all the way.

  • pod sounds very harsh and muddy, while the axe fx is very punchy, clear, and smooth.

  • Axe Fx sounds the best!!\m/

  • The POD is way muddier than the Axe Fx... listen through some quality speakers and you can clearly hear that the Axe sounds so much brighter, crisper, well defined and articulate than the POD. As for the people saying that the Axe isn't worth the extra 1500 - listen to the clean sounds and read into the versatility of all the effects and/or get a real job.

  • To be completely honest, people are going for the HD500 over the Axe-FX because it is breaking through much better. The EQ's between the "amps" are very different. If the Axe-FX was to be brought forward a little more, anyone would agree that it sounds more like a physical amp. I have no bias between the two in any way (I have neither), I just wanted to point out that the HD500 broke through the mix better (and had a great tone) but the Axe-FX actually sounded like a recording of a mesa.

  • I have the HD500. I don't do a lot of metal stuff to be honest but fizz and harshness isn't present in any of my patches. Maybe if I dialed the gain in a little further it would be. To be honest watching this video and others like it, I like the sound of both units I'm not going to say the Axe sounds bad because doesn't, it sounds really good. But it doesn't sound 1500 dollars better than my HD500 not including the floor board. I love my HD500 and the fact that it it doesn't break the bank

  • the thing really to me as a broke ass musician, do I wanna spend 1900 on a fractal, or 400 on a pod...the difference isn't so much that it would make me say, i need that fractal

  • I think that the POD sounds more like a Rec tone-wise, but it still has that untameable fizz and harshness.. the Axe FX sounds much smoother and higher quality, especially around 1:40 where the raw tones are all you can hear and compare the two.

Comparing the raw sounds, I much prefer the Axe Fx... but the POD sounded better in the heavier parts of the mix because the fuzz gets covered up by everything else IMO.

Plus, I have no doubt that the Axe could be tweaked to sound more Recto-ish.

  • Agreed both are nice, but there is a hiss in the Pod sound

  • The Pod sounds more crunchy and fizzy.

The Axe sounds more punchy and smooth.

for some music the Pod sounds better i'm sure, but for this kind of music the Axe is by far superior.

  • It's clear Axe fx sits much better into the mix, while the pod sounds kinda odd compared. The pod sounds much too fuzzy and unclean, it's not defined enough.

  • annotions LOL

  • considering the axe fx cost almost 1k more i'd say the pod beats the axe

  • I think they both sound pretty good, I'd be satisfied with either of them.

However, I think the POD inches the Axe out, I'd say the Pod won.

  • Fucking awesome, I have the HD500 but it's rather obvious the Axe Fx sounds a billion times better, but this is also a reflection of the price...
