i am now 62 years old.i'm 6ft tall and i weigh 280 pounds and i get short of breath after walking ten yards.
but i still want to be a jockey. are there any trainers out there who will give me a chance to fulfill my dream before it's too late? i am not ignorant about horses because i once fed a carrott to a horse in a field near my caravan.
or maybe someone will let me ride their pony around the yard? if it can jump a little that would be great.
i have always wanted to be a jockey but im to tall if i cant race then i will be a hot walker a hot walker is a person who practices with the race horses on the track but they dont race
get a job on a race track learn from the ground up some trainers will train but take baby steps start as a hot walker then a groom and if you know how to ride in a flat saddle can become a excerice rider but want u to know the work is 7 days a week when i left the track in 1999 i was making 350 a week if you want contact me and i can tell you more
i worked with race horses for over 20 years and have seen jockeys that are tall short a little heavy or light if the horse has to carry 122 lbs i would rather have a rider that weight close to that then one that was 110 lbs if it has to carry 122lbs and they weight 110 they have to carry lead plus there tack
@JayceBuckley1 5' 8'' and only 49 kgs? what are you apprenticed as....a jockeys whip?!!!
seriously though, look at the world's greatest jockey, lester piggott, he was 5' 8'' too but he had to starve himself to death all his racing life in order to ride. it's just that tall jockeys (with the exception of lester) look ungainly and a little unbalanced in the saddle. now a JUMP JOCKEY at 5' 8'' would be ideal! and you wouldn't have to starve yourself so much!
I wanna be a jockey but im gonna grow to like 6ft 3 or summat so i might not b able to race but if that the case i wont stop my dream i will just buy a racehorse and gallop it along the beach in all the gear lol i think to be a flat jockey u have to be like 4 ft tall but you can be taller as jump jockey :P dont give up on your dream it may come true
It is very, very much based on height. The reason short jockey's can do it is because they are so naturally light. I'm 5'5 and weight 128. That is average for me. If I wanted to be a jockey, I could do it but I'd have to be willing to work out as much as possible, not eat anything, and never come off that diet so I don't gain weight. That's why shorter jockey's do it is because they can do it so much easier and still be healthy doing it...while hoping they don't get hurt.
@Ilikefluffybunnies your could exercise racehorses if your dream is to go fast, that way you can gallop on the track and do all that stuff and still be tall :)
@Ilikefluffybunnies Nope. The average height for a flat racing jockey is 5 foot 4.5 inches. I want to be a jockey too. I am 4 foot 10.5 inches tall. I am 14 years old and a girl. I weight between 91-96 pounds. (It depends on the season.) My sister who is younger than me by 18 months is 5 foot 3. Oh, and yeah, jump jockeys can be pretty tall. Great Video by the way HorseRacer17. But there is no sound. :(
I also want to be a jockey, just to be on top of a thoroughbred racing on the track just seems like an amazing thing, i'd do anything to be able to get there. Good Luck, and nice vid :D
Get as much riding expierence as you can. Get comfortable on any sort of horse. Get comfortable with speed; learn to rate the speed of your horse and check the gas tank. If you're a girl, work twice as hard because you'll have to keep up with the guys....
keep to it alot of my friends give up on skwl you can have fun but study aswell when ur at skwl ur there to learn have fun other times if you think bwt it skwl is a lil piece of your life yes but can change ur life as soon as u finish get into a jockey skwl and work ur way up x

Well i didnt know you where a she,and i didnt know you wanted this dream. i wasnt insulting you or judgeing you, i was just saying getting that job a race jockey would be hard. starting from scratch. and you said its a dream so you must be having trouble starting of. i wasnt trying to insult you, im pritty pumped a female jockey, thats great it would be great to get girls up there, in that class of riding. sorry if my comment sounded bad but why did you give me a thumbs down on my other comment?
Well yeah your comment sounded bad. I do want this dream, I said so in the description. I already know how hard being a jockey is. But I at least want to be an exercise rider. For the thumbs down on your other comment, sorry, I thought you were making fun of racing. It would be sweet to ponie racehorses.
Beautiful. Never give up, and I mean never. This was my dream as a child all the way till now. I'm 26, and just when I thought of giving up, I pushed harder. I have my first race in April. Please, don't give up. Hang in there, if you want it take it, and one day you'll wake up in morning and realize you did... your a jockey. Don't give up, and don't let anything come between you and your dreams. Go with it. I thought it was over for me, but it wasn't. Go get it!!!
I am never gonna give up your dreams. You can take away something from someone but the one thing you can NEVER take from someone is their dreams.:) I am never gonna give up never and no one is going to stand in the way of my goals.
I envy you. This is a dream of mine. Unfortunately though I am turning 31. If only I could start all over again. However I do ride retired race horses. That is about as close as I will ever get to exercising or riding in a race. I just wish that my dream would have come true and oh well it didn't and I got a long way to go. Such is my luck. Seems everyone has all the luck but me.:(*crying*Good luck to you wish luck would come my way
The dream never dies, sometimes it just goes to sleep. What is to stop you from getting involved in any aspect of horse racing, including racing should you be physically able? Write down your goal, break it down into all the steps necessary to reach it. And do one thing each day that will bring you closer to your goal. Sometimes you need to make your own luck!
Ive always tought of what it would be like to be grabbing on at a full gallop. Running down that track. Good luck. And dont forget to follow your heart.
im 14 n ive been watchin my weight ever since i set my eyes on beinga jockey n i think im going the right way about it i ride my grandads race horses when they are at home and when im 16 im going straight to the brithish racing shool and trying to get my licence
I just started my new job the other day exercising racehorses and so far I am loving it. will let yall know how it goes from here. but good luck with yours and never give up on it.
im a jockey its the best sport ever im only 14 but wen i reach 16 ive got a job with a friend my racehorse is called red rum the II because he looks like him and was brought up near wer he was and trained like him hes the best.
yh its great and my racehorse is beautiful hes the best im a boy but most people i race against tend to be girls gud look with ur dream hope u get wot u want
Unless you are doing pony racing, you cant be a jockey. It is illegal to race ride or even excercise race horses without a licence, and you need to be 16yrs old for that =s As for myself, I'm a jockey too. I'm 24 & an Advanced Apprentice. Next year I plan to turn proffessional =) This season I had 73 winners, my best yet =D Its hard work, but worth it in the long run. Good Luck for the future
actually u can race under 16 as an ametuer racer wer no one can put bets down but ur still racing and i got my ametuer licenscence of my anti as she works in the racing industry
ummmm... no.... you cant actually o.O I'm presuming you are in the UK cause thats where the great Red Rum was, but unless I am just a total idiot, which I'm not, my whole family is involved in racing, has been for generations. So yes, you cant possibly be an ameteur rider, not if you are under 16.... do your research before you lie =S
i aint lyin my family as been involved in racing aswell my horse is a 14.1 dark bay gelding Age Limits: 5 to 75 years, no real age limit exists for race riding, hehe thats kewl so is there an age limit,
well if your horse is actually a pony then you cant possibly be riding him in official races o.O Besides if you knew anything you would realise that real racing does have age limits. You need to be at least 16 yrs old to ride a registered race horse in an official race on a racetrack & for point to point. The only form of racing that you could be involved in is "Pony Racing"..... like I said, no point in lying to a real jockey about a subject you obviously know very little about =S

Bones of steel. Head with nothing in it. A carrot. And not enough sense between you and the horse.

there is nothing about the length, it is all about the weight. The length does not affect the horse, but the weight does.

That is about as close as I will ever get to exercising or riding in a race. I just wish that my dream would have come true and oh well it didn't and I got a long way to go. Such is my luck. Seems everyone has all the luck but me.:(*crying*Good luck to you wish luck would come my way
Targetsignal2 3 years ago
Aw =] I'm sure you can do it!! Don't give up on your dream.
Thanks, good luck to you too!
HorseRacer17 3 years ago
The dream never dies, sometimes it just goes to sleep. What is to stop you from getting involved in any aspect of horse racing, including racing should you be physically able? Write down your goal, break it down into all the steps necessary to reach it. And do one thing each day that will bring you closer to your goal. Sometimes you need to make your own luck!

im a jockey its the best sport ever im only 14 but wen i reach 16 ive got a job with a friend my racehorse is called red rum the II because he looks like him and was brought up near wer he was and trained like him hes the best.
redrumII 4 years ago
Are you really a jockey?
Your racehorse sounds great! ^^
HorseRacer17 4 years ago
yh its great and my racehorse is beautiful hes the best im a boy but most people i race against tend to be girls gud look with ur dream hope u get wot u want
redrumII 4 years ago 2
Unless you are doing pony racing, you cant be a jockey. It is illegal to race ride or even excercise race horses without a licence, and you need to be 16yrs old for that =s As for myself, I'm a jockey too. I'm 24 & an Advanced Apprentice. Next year I plan to turn proffessional =) This season I had 73 winners, my best yet =D Its hard work, but worth it in the long run. Good Luck for the future
horseluver2k7 4 years ago
actually u can race under 16 as an ametuer racer wer no one can put bets down but ur still racing and i got my ametuer licenscence of my anti as she works in the racing industry
redrumII 4 years ago
ummmm... no.... you cant actually o.O I'm presuming you are in the UK cause thats where the great Red Rum was, but unless I am just a total idiot, which I'm not, my whole family is involved in racing, has been for generations. So yes, you cant possibly be an ameteur rider, not if you are under 16.... do your research before you lie =S
horseluver2k7 4 years ago
i aint lyin my family as been involved in racing aswell my horse is a 14.1 dark bay gelding Age Limits: 5 to 75 years, no real age limit exists for race riding, hehe thats kewl so is there an age limit,
redrumII 4 years ago
well if your horse is actually a pony then you cant possibly be riding him in official races o.O Besides if you knew anything you would realise that real racing does have age limits. You need to be at least 16 yrs old to ride a registered race horse in an official race on a racetrack & for point to point. The only form of racing that you could be involved in is "Pony Racing"..... like I said, no point in lying to a real jockey about a subject you obviously know very little about =S

i am now 62 years old.i'm 6ft tall and i weigh 280 pounds and i get short of breath after walking ten yards.
but i still want to be a jockey. are there any trainers out there who will give me a chance to fulfill my dream before it's too late? i am not ignorant about horses because i once fed a carrott to a horse in a field near my caravan.
or maybe someone will let me ride their pony around the yard? if it can jump a little that would be great.
i do 2 press-ups every morning so i'm fit too.
nuipret 8 months ago
i have always wanted to be a jockey but im to tall if i cant race then i will be a hot walker a hot walker is a person who practices with the race horses on the track but they dont race
superspots1000 1 year ago
get a job on a race track learn from the ground up some trainers will train but take baby steps start as a hot walker then a groom and if you know how to ride in a flat saddle can become a excerice rider but want u to know the work is 7 days a week when i left the track in 1999 i was making 350 a week if you want contact me and i can tell you more
bobinmissouri 1 year ago
i worked with race horses for over 20 years and have seen jockeys that are tall short a little heavy or light if the horse has to carry 122 lbs i would rather have a rider that weight close to that then one that was 110 lbs if it has to carry 122lbs and they weight 110 they have to carry lead plus there tack
bobinmissouri 1 year ago
if i want to be a jockey i need
right weight, hight, i need to belive thet i can become a jockey.
lucifirestarter 2 years ago
@lucifirestarter im a apprentice jockey im 5 ft 8inches and 49kgs its just as long as your light
JayceBuckley1 1 year ago
@JayceBuckley1 5' 8'' and only 49 kgs? what are you apprenticed as....a jockeys whip?!!!
seriously though, look at the world's greatest jockey, lester piggott, he was 5' 8'' too but he had to starve himself to death all his racing life in order to ride. it's just that tall jockeys (with the exception of lester) look ungainly and a little unbalanced in the saddle. now a JUMP JOCKEY at 5' 8'' would be ideal! and you wouldn't have to starve yourself so much!
good look though jaycee. it's great.
nuipret 8 months ago
Height doesn't matter, only weight. As of today, the top 5 jockeys in North America weight between 108-116
1337ballin 2 years ago 2

to be a jockey you need
right weight
right height
and a whole lot of guts
TheHorseGames 2 years ago
@sammyj602 you mean the height doesnt matter not length
horsegirl12341 2 years ago
@sammyj602
Bones of steel. Head with nothing in it. A carrot. And not enough sense between you and the horse.
Don't get me wrong, I love horse racing but those guys are insane who do it : )

How old are you?
Lyramilly 3 years ago
I wanna be a jockey but im gonna grow to like 6ft 3 or summat so i might not b able to race but if that the case i wont stop my dream i will just buy a racehorse and gallop it along the beach in all the gear lol i think to be a flat jockey u have to be like 4 ft tall but you can be taller as jump jockey :P dont give up on your dream it may come true
Ilikefluffybunnies 3 years ago
Good idea lol. But there isn't actual height limits for being a jockey as long as you're light enough.
HorseRacer17 3 years ago
woop i gotta get a diet goin lol
Ilikefluffybunnies 3 years ago
@HorseRacer17
BLiSSFULxFiLLY 1 year ago
It's 5 "2 for a flat jockey, but I think they're letting people be taller now :D
Susie369 2 years ago
there is nothing about the length, it is all about the weight. The length does not affect the horse, but the weight does.
badabamlamm 2 years ago
@Ilikefluffybunnies your could exercise racehorses if your dream is to go fast, that way you can gallop on the track and do all that stuff and still be tall :)
BabyDollAmy13 1 year ago
@Ilikefluffybunnies Nope. The average height for a flat racing jockey is 5 foot 4.5 inches. I want to be a jockey too. I am 4 foot 10.5 inches tall. I am 14 years old and a girl. I weight between 91-96 pounds. (It depends on the season.) My sister who is younger than me by 18 months is 5 foot 3. Oh, and yeah, jump jockeys can be pretty tall. Great Video by the way HorseRacer17. But there is no sound. :(

Get as much riding expierence as you can. Get comfortable on any sort of horse. Get comfortable with speed; learn to rate the speed of your horse and check the gas tank. If you're a girl, work twice as hard because you'll have to keep up with the guys....
ridingxruffian 3 years ago
keep to it alot of my friends give up on skwl you can have fun but study aswell when ur at skwl ur there to learn have fun other times if you think bwt it skwl is a lil piece of your life yes but can change ur life as soon as u finish get into a jockey skwl and work ur way up x

I just read in the Bloodhorse about a woman who always wanted to be a jockey, and after she raised her kids, she started working as a hot walker, then exercise jockey, and at 47 is starting to ride in races. So, if she can do it, I guess anyone can.

I used to own an ex-race horse, he was TOO SLOW for the Quarter Tracks, and everytime he took off at full speed, I'd think What would it be like on a champion like Dash for Cash? It was both scary and exciting.

Well i didnt know you where a she,and i didnt know you wanted this dream. i wasnt insulting you or judgeing you, i was just saying getting that job a race jockey would be hard. starting from scratch. and you said its a dream so you must be having trouble starting of. i wasnt trying to insult you, im pritty pumped a female jockey, thats great it would be great to get girls up there, in that class of riding. sorry if my comment sounded bad but why did you give me a thumbs down on my other comment?
oakstorm 3 years ago
Well yeah your comment sounded bad. I do want this dream, I said so in the description. I already know how hard being a jockey is. But I at least want to be an exercise rider.
