  • Thanks for the tips, man. Been editing SD for years, finally going into HD and it's like learning all over again. This helped a lot!

  • What about the compatibility issue? It says the image data rate is too high for MPEG-4 video simple profile 1.

  • very helpful, thanks for posting it.

  • Really helpful, Thanks bro

Il definitely check back if I need more tips

  • Nice one man, easy to follow and straight forward. Cheers for this bud

  • Thanks Ed... that's what I needed to know.

  • Ed, please stop using bodies of women in your tutorials. It is distracting and needless objectification for the women. I appreciate your tutorials, but the images are in poor taste. Thanks, Ed.

  • Hi Ed: I am trying to compress a 1 hour hd video shot with a P2, into a decent format to burn on a dvd an which size wouldnt be hugh, so far it withs 42 gb, is there a better way to do this?

    Thanlks a lot.

  • Thanks. The first clear and effective advice i've found on this.

  • so if i can convert my video to quick time player by using wuick time conversion, i can view and edit my video frame by frame in photoshop cs5???

  • great video alot of help thanks

  • groovy

  • Great tip! Compared to the way I have been converting (using Compressor), this way is faster, produces better quality video, and creates a much smaller file size. Wish I knew about this years ago.

  • Ok... I am helping my sister in law do some basic video auditions . The requirements are that the y want the video file sent as quicktime and less that 10MB. They are typically about 1.5 minute of video. Saving as Quicktime (mov) makes this short video about 700 MB big. What is the best way to compress this video and keep the quality when it is just 10 MB.

  • Hi there......Tried exactly what you said. THe resolution is a bit poor. I tried MP4 instead of MP4 ( ??? ) that you chose...comes pretty good. Anyway, your video has been really helpful in exploring various options based on my need.

    Thanks...

  • I used this tip for a short 90 second video I made and the mp4 quality was atrocious. I followed all the tips, and the size was much smaller, but quality was awful. I shot in HD, does that matter?

  • dude your awesome! thanks soooooo much!

  • thank you animaxvp

  • when I try 2 play a video from a website it is stretched horizontally, how can I fix this? and I don't have Quicktime pro.

  • Hi There. Thank you for a great instruction video. It really helped me a lot and saved me a lot of money. Regards Henrik

  • Thank you. Your videos are a great help.

  • I don't comment on post very much but thank you!

  • Great tip! Was very helpful, thanks

  • thanks for the tip...

  • Great Job!! thx.

  • If I were just making an 18 minute film to put on a dvd and not for the web should I still follow all your instructions or are your instructions based on uploading to the web? Would Mpeg-4 still be the best way to go or what do you suggest?

  • This is hugely helpful - thank you. I know *just* enough about Final Cut to get myself into trouble (and to get really frustrated with all that I don't know) - you just saved me several hours of pulling my hair out. Thanks!!

  • wow thats an apples to oranges comparison there

  • Hi great tutorial...but saving this as it is would you still need to take into compressor?

  • ? when i export from final cut , all i get is the audio any1 can help please?

  • Good video on compression, smart guy, thank you.

  • Any one know how 2 edit quicktime videos, to cut seconds? And how to put quicktime videos on disc??????

  • Hey This video helped me out alot.. like a whole lot good job very very good video

  • hi ... I have a problem, may be you can help me out.... After I finished on my sequence ( it is 8 minutes) , I want to export it to Quick time.......So I click export to quicktime , But everytime I do this...my pc gets paralized, it does not pass the 8% SO I HAVE TO ( FORCE QUIT) and do it again and again and never pass 8%....

  • do you have a PC ??? runing MAC ??? i dont think so...

  • I just can't get my files to play as 16 x9 on a PC after making them on the Mac.

Have tried the method you suggest on YouTube but does not even come out 16x9 on the mac.

At the moment I get best results choosing H264 and setting size to 1024 x 576 and not ticking letterbox option.

I'm using a Canon XL-H1s and shooting widescreen, any suggestions?

  • thx man helped a lot =D

  • So i did everything you showed here in the video. I set my Data rate at 1700 which gave me 97 000kbs, but when all was done and i click on the file and get the info it tell me that its only 23MB...? How does this work.? Can i set my data rate higher so the final out come is higher or does it have to be under 100MB before ?

  • @vipcayman Same here

  • Very helpful thankyou. I use compressor but handy tp know how to go about it with quicktime. Cheers mate!!!

  • what version of final cut pro are you using? my final cut pro doesn't have the options your does.

  • As a professional, I recommend you start to use "compressor" over Quicktime. Due to the far superior encodes rendered in finalization. And the processing time is far quicker than "quicktime" Professionally speaking, quicktime is for amatuers...and looks like shit compared to compressor...

  • Hi there, I have 5 videos to upload to Youtube. They're HD and I compressed them but I'm not really sure which option works best for HD on Youtube. Which option do you use with compressor? I'd appreciate your help, thank you!

  • what is your camera format?i mean your original file before exporting it,and by the way you are telling people to ask question and i don't see you answer them,so plz try to answer some of them if you felt that it's a pro question, thanks and have a nice day.

  • The Format is DV.

  • Thanks so much for doing this video. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise... makes my job easier, that's for sure!!

  • hey im having trouble keeping the aspect ratio after the conversion... i dont knoe it its the titles because when i convert the clips its fine but when i add the titles it converts into 4:3 instead of 16:9 footage is all widescreen can you shed some light on this

  • Try using letter box ratio in quicktime.

  • thanks a lot, this video gave me the answer a was looking for.

  • este es el mejor bideo you are el chingon mantente asi chao and thnaks

  • un video de los mejores ni los manuales q trae final cut pro son como los tuyos Hey you are the best

  • could you view the video I posted on you tube you will find it under title angelamylove8 and possibly give me solution as to why I am stll not getting the clearest video viewing. the video is not that big 1:12 seconds I believe and I set the settings below data rate at 1986 tell me what settings you thinks is best please keep uploading to different settings and still not getting clear as the one you have on here by the way I only have final cut express 4

  • try decreasing the number of key frames and increase the data rate as much as you can without exceeding the maximum size for youtube.

  • Thank you sooooo much for this video tutorial you made it simple and easy to understand and showing your video while teaching me seems to show really well. I really can't thank you enough thank goodness for people like you I look forward to viewing more videos if you have some uploaded. take care and keep up the good work.

  • I keep getting this blasted general error like halfway through exporting. Someone help?

  • Thanks for the info, I've been trying to work on better quality. Now I know exact way to compress, now I can share the knowledge, with my friends at Hoike, an editing station. Keep it coming.

  • Thanks for the vid.

  • I can't get my compressor to work because of the Qmaster mishap and such so I want to try and save things on quicktime conversion, what is the best option to save the movie as while still keeping the movie clear and not pixelating any movements, I want to burn these to DvD.

    -thanks to anyone with help!

  • Lucky bastard - filming a bikini contest

  • thanks man that really helped

    continue ur great work

  • Wow, thanks a lot! I wouldn't have thought to ask this question but it's very useful. I've been using .mov files but the ability to maximize file quality within 100MB makes this very appealing. Good stuff as usual!
