He's been around forever, great studio drummer and no disputing his ability, but Bruford could take his work off into some obscure dimensions and take us along with him..
Alan's drumming is like the ocean. It can be as calm as can be, but then it can come crashing down on you and everything in between and beyond. Damn good drummer.
To me Alan White has always been either brilliant and inspiring or boring and lazy. I actually thought some of his best work was during the Trevor Rabin years with Yes. That being said, When he's on and creative, I think he's incredibly unique.
Alan is a great drummer, and the only one who seems to have practiced before going on tour with Styx this summer. Styx is blowing Yes away everywhere they go. That never would have happened with Rick Wakeman or even Oliver in the mix. But it isn't all Geoff. Steve is just noodling half the time. My God what has happened to these legends?
Fast single stroke rolls are really the essence of rock an roll drumming.....
Alan White on Relayer still amazes me. He made extremely difficult material actually swing.
Not to mention "Sound Chaser" . The first time I heard it on WNEW in New York, I was sure it was Billy Cobham because of the ferocious rolls around the Tom Toms.
That recording of those Ludwig Drums is still my favorite drum sound...
lo mejor de Alan es sin duda su trabajo impresionante, dificil y no suficientemente valorado de "Tales from...". Dificil papeleta sustituir a Bruford, pero en su primer trabajo lo hizo de manera impresionante.
Pretty darned good.He was an absolute beast in his prime..Yessongs comes to mind. The ferocity he would attack the drums with was almost unmatched by any rock drummer..before or since.
@manzanodelia i live right down the street from Alan and i actually had the pleasure of playing with him at a summer concert at one of my good friends party's
@superssjdan1 Well put. I always thought of Alan as the much more physical drummer, and Bill as more of a technician. Both very good. Alan sounds great here.

Alan gave Yes a more rocky less jazzy edge than Bill Bruford a brilliant drummer then and now!

Alan is versatile, the fact that he sounds like a natural drummer with both Yes and his work with George Harrison and John Lennon proves that

Clearly, Alan White is one of the great ( and the most under-rated) prog- rock drummers-
he is the heart and heart beat of one of the greatest art rock bands of all time:::::::::
Relayer still stands as one of the most musical drumming albums of the genre and one of my personal favs---
This is a great post, it's about time!!!!
check out this solo by a huge Alan White fan and the author of
"The Book of Funk Beats- grooves for snare, bass and hihat"
