12 mph is the wind speed the so called experts say is needed for good electric production to make it pay for itself.. but really if we simply make the sails (vanes) as big as the dutch do, its more than enough at probably 5mph; BUT you have to have a system to slow down the vanes if the proverbial "STORM" or hurricane comes along. (this is called feathering the prop, a simple spring (or bungee cord ) could be adjusted so that as the wind speed increases the vanes bend back (less into the wind)
CHINA has "grid tie" inverters that you simply plug into any household outlets, you plug in your solor or wind mill or other system into it, plut the GT inverter into the wall and it self synchonizes to make it the right Hz and the right correct phase, so you can reduce your electric bill immediately. .. they are also stackable and can come in 250 watt versions so you can add more capability as you build it. (money , energy, time, effort)_
I "think" i heard that washing machine motors would work. But car alternators are nice and easy to find. I think that instead of a small prop type turbine, the dutch big sail vanes with slow moving but catching alot more wind are better, but need to have "feather" capability (feathering means turn the vanes into the wind so they turn slower or not at all, can be springs or hydraulic ) ; then with a gearing system (perhaps like some lawn mowers with infinite gears could give you more power.
Good, I like that you share this video, I wish success always I would need free plans and. Those turbines and thousands others across the Midwest the past few years were part of an unprecedented build-out for the wind-power industry.
Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing Those turbines and thousands others across the Midwest the past few years were part of an unprecedented build-out for the wind-power industry.
because do u realize the cost a commericial turbine? goodluck affording that. this is materials readily available, not bought brand new.... except a generater
Just like the voltaic cell guys, those who know how to make them aren't going to tell you for free; and those who know how to really make wind power aren't sharing a lot of the pitfalls, either. You lost me at 'free', when you had a $100 office chair and a $130 Antec DC motor in the 'free' video. Car alternators aren't 'easy power', either. Not unless you use a Briggs and Stratton engine to spin them fast enough...the voltage reg. inside them requires a LOT of RPM to make them actually charge.
If a guy has a bit of electrical know how and mechanical savy they can build this same mechanism. This fella is demonstrating how he built his.A person does not need to build thiers "exact".A guy just needs to know how electricity flows (pos an neg) and how to get wind to spin a prop shaft.Simply a car alt produces 13.8vdc.(or 12v.d.c its the same) and then an invertor will convert that 12v.d.c to 120v.a.c(its a crude form of A.C. but it will run a computer(which is a sensitive piece of machinery
Hehe... Funny that the guys that comment on the project and complain that it would be better for them to rather just nuclear power is still watching this and have time to comment on you acheivement... Good job... Im gonna try it
@stayinstock building mine, got the dc brushless moter free off an old treadmill.. got lots nuts and bolts handy.. ended up with a vertical axis turbine that puts out around 500 watts, also have a few batterie's and an inverter from our solar deal... so why not... its free power from crap we can find anywhere these days..
@Me102288 Point is,it's stuff you have laying around.
Where would someone get a power inverter for free or good 12volt batteries?
I can probably go to a scrap yard to find motors...if they don't charge me for them.
I have an old generator I could use,but how many people have on of those?
The title should be "How I made a wind turbine for free" because without a lot of searching and gas finding the stuff, most people can't build it for free.
@stayinstock well thats not exactly required to make electricity, but I believe he was talking about a wind turbine, not a grid tie. Batteries arent required either. I use a string of capacitors to temporartily hold til its gets dumped into the grid :-\
ok, all these comments are bullsh$t. you made a good point about the furrell bearing made from an office chair. i use the fork bearings from discarded scooters and such. good work man.
@Alphonse57 the magnets rotate, the coils stay still, you can find all kinds of brushless dc moters.. just put them on an ampmeter and spin then with your hand, if it puts out any power its a permanent magnet brushless moter and or generator
how is this free? It requires purchase of parts and supplies to build... Free would be you sending me one upon request without paying anything for it.... that would be free.
@tecshtarcs I was at one time interested in building my own wind turbine generator. I estimated the cost at $80 and a boof of a weekend to construct. At the rate I'm billed for electricity now, it would take 6 years of constant operation at maximum output to break even. Instead of building wind turbines, people should write their representatives in support of nuclear power. It will be better for both the environment and their pocket book.
@RealityCheck05 There is a lot of ways to spend $80. Thousands. Count up the percentage of all those ideas that actually offer ANY return on investment. So you'll give up on wind power and endorse nuclear power that has the potential to do harm, because your concerned about the ROI on $80? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Worse, you haven't calculated the savings you'd experience AFTER the unit has paid for itself. Very, very narrow thinking.
@KyleCarrington The foregone conclusion that I made no such calculations is as incorrect as the assumption thant nuclear power neccessarily has the potential to do more harm than wind power. As it happens, the upkeep for the wind device I was pondering is especially high for people who move more than once every 2 years.
"Ridiculous"? The pot is calling the kettle "black" it seems...(A chrome kettle at that :P)
@RealityCheck05 in six years ur free it was free why pay for a disaster waiting to make your home worthless and leave u home less just as peopel in japan who are now without homes because of not cheap unclean energy aand when was the last time they had a wind spill? or when was teh last solar pipeline leak? or MELT DOWN? CLEAN AND Solar Matainace is cleaning the glass and yeah its not radio active
@69lol69lol69lol You speak as if radiation or leaks are an insurmountable problem. Who told you that fossil fuels came from somewhere other than the ground to begin with or that radiation doesn't occur naturally as well? (Certainly not a geologist or an engineer. More likely a college dropout or hipster...)
The real danger to Japan is not being able to supply enough energy to their people. Tsunamis can knock down wind turbines and solar panels as easily reinforced concrete reactor walls.
THE CHAIR IDEA IS AWESOME, THAT GIVES ME A FEW MORE IDEAS AFTER WATCHING THIS BUT DUDE, HARDLY NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS FREE BUT HATS OFF FOR THE OFFICE CHAIR!
Whats the name of the generartor, and how much energy will that turbine give?

WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE
windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com
ZERO-NOISE from the gears and the generators because they are silenced underground (Only the outer parts of the turbines may create sound.).
This SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS (since slow-moving) and helps the wind energy companies (since it is FREE FOR ALL.).
