I just watched the original documentary of these 2 ladies, filmed in the 1970's, and it is incredible how "dead-on" these perfromances are! Great acting by Lange and Barrymore.
the funny thing is...at one point, Al Maisles quipped with the real Edie on camera who would play Edie, and he mentioned Ethyl Barrymore (Drew's great aunt), but Edie said that she didn't want anyone to play her....though, in my own (humble) opinion, Drew was spot on all the way through....except for the anger...
ok Drew CRACKS me up in this movie. First off the gonorrhea line, you can see Drew shining through a little there like she's gonna start laughing. And then I love how she's says 'Jack..' at 1:21. So many little lines that she nails and makes hilarious. And nevermind her SPOT ON embodiment of little Edie. Amazing. Drew has come a long way. I think she said in an interview with Dave L once that she 'can't act'. Well, that's not true anymore (if ever it was)
Ther premise of Little Edie's romance with Joe Kennedy Jr. is dramatized in the first act of the musical Grey Gardens. There are clever songs performed such as You Better Fall Out of Love

Why would anyone watch this instead of the original? These characters - Jackie, Big and LIttle Edie - are too strong and too unique for anyone to do justice to them. Drew Barrymore is nothing but a mimic, a good one, but she could never bring LIttle Edie to life for me.
I don't know......drew seems scary and not demure to me, also little Edie didnt wear all the dark make up? I like drew in this film, but more big Edie I think x
@sezums I agree that I preferred Big Edie (or rather Jessica's portrayal of BE) over Drew's portrayal, maybe it was the extremely heavy make-up and the accent seemed off to me for Little Edie. I am a Drew Barrymore fan however and give Drew credit for tackling this role :)
I really hope she actually asked Jackie that. What an amazing thing that would have been to witness !! We will never know for sure, but it's totally plausible considering all parties involved.
I don't know about the gonorrhea remark, but I just finished watching the DVD commentary and the filmmakers discuss that a similar exchange occurred between Jackie and Little Edie, but it happened many years later in the '80s. By then Big Edie was dead and Little Edie was staying at Jackie's NY apartment. They got into an argument and Little Edie said the whole bit about how it could've been her as first lady, to which Jackie said, "I wish it had been." So the filmmakers decided to use it.
Little Edie also commented about Joe Kennedy Jr. in 1961 at a reception for the Kennedy, Fitzgerald, Bouvier and Auchincloss relatives of Jack and Jackie. She essentially said the same thing to Joe Kennedy Sr. Had Joe not died in the war and had married her, she would be First Lady and not Jackie. Accounts of the exchange have Joe just shaking his head and walking away.
Wow. I saw the original documentary and the portrayals that these actresses give, are just amazing. I'm really surprised by Drew Barrymore's performance. She really deserves an oscar nomination.
Since it was only made for HBO, the film isn't eligible for Oscar consideration. From what I've heard though, both Drew and Jessica have recieved Emmy nominations for their performances.
that is a very powerful scene. it sums up a momment of regret eddie has wasted her life. considering the 2 women lead you to believe that they are content living in the past. beautiful movie!
Jeanne Tripplehorn was divine in this role as Jackie O I only wish her part(s) were longer!

This is the best scene in the film, chiefly due to Jeanne Tripplehorn’s performance as Jackie.

Yeah, the HBO movie came out on DVD last Tuesday (July 14) and I bought it and watched it with the commentary on.
