  • How do I best teach my kindergarten child to read? I am confused as a parent but her teacher gave her a holiday homework packet and I kept seeing the "Dolch List" so I was curious and wanted to know what this "Dolch" word meant and how it pertained to her learning......but give some suggestions as to what you think in your opinion would be the best way to teach a child to learn and read words..I sound the sounds out but if her teacher is using this method then what should I be doing?

  • @chinewmarie Teach as much phonics as you pleasantly can. Point out the sounds in the Dolch words. The real damage occurs only when a kid never grasps that words are symbols for sounds. Most kids, with a little help, do figure it out...Google my "54: Preemptive Reading" (on Improve-Education. org)

  • so what do you suggest for an alternate learning method for reading?

  • load of crap, my daughter learned to read 3 Dick and Jane books in a very short time by using her memory....it was very easy for her. she can also read by sounding but most english words cant be sounded as they are spelled so you have to use your memory half the time.

  • Everyone seems to agree on one point: the smart, highly verbal kids will figure it out. They will crash through Sight Words to phonics. This daughter did. I did. But the not-so-smart, not-so-verbal kids are destroyed, for all the reasons described. They don't crash through--that's the point. They may be stuck forever trying to memorize a few hundred DESIGNS each year. (Also see companion video: How Dolch Words Cause Illiteracy and Dyslexia.)

  • Let me also say, from my own experience as an ESL teacher for almost 30 years, that this whole language approach is completely non-educational for my students. Shame on anyone who calls themselves an "educator" and falls for this method of non-teaching.

  • @TheNeonAngel Dick and Jane??? Can she read Dr. Seuss? The "Dick and Jane" books were outdated in the 1960's!!! And I can promise you that ALL English words can be sounded as they are spelled if you know the rules of the language, such as "I before E except after C", etc. Will she ever learn to decipher the meaning of an unknown word by identifying the Latin root? Will she ever be able to turn a noun into a verb by applying the proper suffix? Not with sight words! Phoenitics are essential!
