I completely agree, PrincessOfAvalon. It's a real American classic that people should be more familiar with. I was absolutely blown away by the casting and the subtle script.
The movie is amazing and Elizabeth is a great actress....to notamunk42: She isn´t talking german at the beginning of this trailer, she talks norwegian, but in the movie are some scences she´s talking german... it sounds very funny..you can ask me when you want to have some translations..
this is not a realistic presentation of Norwegians 1 they behave like they are from east europe and they dont even speak norwegians, sounds fucked up to me!!
The character is not Norwegian. She's a German who fled from her country to Norway and then finally to the United States - but thanks for the stereotype.
It's a sweet movie, but quite a disappointment if you're norwegian. The language coach for this film must've been constantly drunk or they didn't use a language coach at all. It's just plain awful.
:) I hear ya. I watched movie commentary and they said that Elizabeth Reaser (Inga) only had a couple of days to prepare this role until actual shooting day. Of course, they had language coaches, but that's not enough time to learn such a difficult language. At least she tried and did best on the role. :)
According to what you said, I think that they should have planned casting memebers ahead for this wonderful and beautiful story. Then, the movie should have been much much better.
If you love warm, old fashioned movies, but shot like the best films of today...you HAVE to search out this film. It's a modern classic, and I want to see this become well loved as much as a Shawshank Redemption, or similar films that did nothing at the box office.
Besides it having rising star Elizabeth Reaser give a career making performance, it's got practically nothing objectionable. So share it with all ages. Just not with those who have ADD.
I guess that she was speaking Norweigan since Olf Torvik was a Norweigan Farmer. A lot of people on youtube actually critisize how bad her Norwegian is and they can not understand what she was saying in Norweigan either. hehe. However, it is still an wonderful movie with wonderful performance.

Sweet Land is one of the most beautiful and touching movies I've ever seen.
It's a pity that this movie is so little-known.

What a great movie!!!
It takes you back to your grandmother and grandfather who for most people were farmers and also maybe new to this country.
I love this movie - if your are not tearing up and cheering at the same time at the end then I just don't know.

Should that be German at the beginning? I'm German and I understood not a word. The last one could be "Nein" - "No." ^^
