thanks for the vid. i think it has helped me lean in the direction of the frenzel. it provides a close enough approximation of the desired tones i would be looking for in a preamp. how close to the tone did your video camera record? thanks.
TURMA - Thrash / Heavy Metal Band from Italy - Hi there - take a look at our first album "Tearless" - on our youtube page: turmaofficial - the Album have been recorded with Engl e530 + mesa 90/90 and mesa cabinet 4x12 in our studio, with cubase
Thank you very very much for sharing your first hand experience with everyone and letting us hear with our own ears... thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video. Much appreciated Brother!
im thikning of purchasing the formula preamp, as its in my price range.. just wondering if you have time, would you kindly go more in depth of more tones that can be achieved ?
God, that Frenzel sounds so damn good. I've use my classic 30 with a 70/80 and a G12T-75 for recording rhythm guitar, but I have a hammond ao-44 reverb amp that would sound simply amazing with the right external all-tube pre. It's a sweet PTP wired 18 watter with a huge output tranny, but instead of EL84s and 12AX7s, it has ECL86's which have one pentode and one triode each, so it's like a single 12AX7 and a pair of EL84's. How's the Frenzel FM-DP1? Anyone tried it? I NEED a a decent preamp!
Mesa formula sounds great ... the engl 530 does have good articulation but I have to say I like the Mesa ... all great tones. And quiet - I'd like to know more about how you cut the noise down.
hey, can you do a video with just your mesa formula im thinking about buying one for 400 from my guitar teacher and i havent got to play it until next week and i wanna hear it, if youd post a video of you just using it that would be amazing!! :D could you message me a response back?
@punkeratheart Well, I don't know if you should recognize it or not... it's a riff from one of my original tunes, but perhaps this is a sign that it sounds too much like something else. :)
@bduersch Well, I played it on an acoustic over the phone to 17 people that day because it was driving me nuts, and no one could tell me what it was from, though a couple people did say it sounded vaguely familiar. That said, everything sounds like something else. There's just so much music out there, it's impossible to write an "original" rhythm guitar riff. Don't sweat it.
Can you do more on the frenzel? I am really considering buying the 200 dollar F/M preamp. but I am so terrified about buying anything without playing through it first (which is of course impossible) and I'd like to hear a good dcemo of what moderate crunchy stuff sounds like, and maybe a little messing with the eq knobs for the classic boost and scoop and bright vs dark ends of the spectrum, or just set everything at noon and hammer on the bridge pickup of a tele.....something, please?
i laugh when I see people doing this...listen, All you need is a badass gforce, only one preamp youve got..pick one what ever now add a nice poweramp and 2 cabinets for stereo and you are set. Youve got all this and for what? You dont even have total control of your entire unit it seams. leaning over using your hands to select stuff...not very pro unit. Not trying to be disrespectful, just simplify
I have a Formula Pre and it sounds great for clean and bluesy gain, just like you demonstrated. It's been tough trying to get it to scream though. I think I want the Engl Preamp!! Still, I haven't found anything that sounds as pristine as the Formula Pre and I'd hate to lose it, so I might hook up both. Thanks for your work. It answered some questions for me.
Can't remember where I had it set for the "bassman" channel (cleaner tone), but for the more distorted "JCM800" channel it was nearly maxxed out... it's not an overly high gain preamp.
hey man, i play like hard rock grungey music. my favourite bands are puddle of mudd alice in chains and nirvana and mudhoney, but i also like Bands like black label society kiss led zeppelin ac/dc and pink floyd but my main thing is grunge what do you think is the best preamp for me im thinking the recto recording preamp and im plugging it into my fender twin amp and i was wondering if theres any way i can use the fenders clean tone and the mesa's distortion tone and be able to control that.
Hi, how do you like your Frenzel FM-800? I am thinking about ordering one. Is it really worth it? Can you really get those 80's (Randy Rhoads, Whitesnake, etc) type of tones? On your video, were you runinning it through EL34 or 6L6 as power amp? Thanks, Arthur
very nice setup and demo. You really demonstrate the sounds of each preamp nicely. I'm just using an ENGL E530 now but am looking to do a multiple preamp set up like yours.
Just wondering, do you use different tubes/ valves to give you different tones, by using NOS, or do you just use all the same new production 12ax7's? Also what brand of poweramp valves do you use/ prefer(EL34/6L6)?
I've been using the George L's cables... started using 'em for my pedalboard a few years ago, and liked 'em so much that I picked up a couple of kits for the rack.

Do you still have the engl 530?
BlueBarrier782 2 years ago
No, I ended up selling it... I liked the super-high-gain tones, but didn't like the way it sounded for clean and low-gain applications.
bduersch 2 years ago
@bduersch
I found the same exact problem with the engl.
I'm looking for a new preamp, how do you like that frenzel?
I'm looking for warm cleans and a mid/80's high gain marshallish tone. Seems like the frenzel should cover both of those bases well.

What type of cables are you using to connect all of your gear?
I'm assuming its probably higher quality stuff (ie Klotz etc)
