oh my god! you are so lucky! i want a fennec fox really bad x3 if you dont mind me asking, bout how much did the fox cost? i need to know about how much to save!
I have a pet fox, my page has videos of her. she acts like a cat dog, wagging her tail and pouncing. she is only 7th generation domestic but she lives with me and my 2 cats just fine. she looooooves dogs, the bigger the better.
I bet you've got to be super diligent with keeping his rabies shot up to date. I'd be worried he could get sick easily...or not find a vet to treat him. :(
are you going to release them into the wild? no! they'd just end up like the strays on the streets that we feel sorry for, and if you try to set loose a domesticated fox it would only result in the same thing- a starving stray.
okay, so people saying they need to be released into the wild? they'll die first of all because they were brought up relying on people and they have no clue how to survive out there. also, they seem to love it if you ask me; they've had no other life in the wild, they don't know what it's like so how could they possibly miss it? and finally, housecats and housecats were wild once. they had to be domesticated, and i bet most who are against domesticting OTHER animals own a cat and/or dog.
It's a Silver Fox. They were bred to be pets. It's domesticated so don't hate it. Thats like hating somebody with a pet dog because they used to be wolves.
@adrenalinek1ck Well, there are silver foxes and cross foxed in the wild too, but it's illegal to take one from the wild as a pet, has to be captive bred. But yeah, still same issue... if you let it go, it'd die just like any other captive bred animal that was never taught to survive on its own.
It's taken up to 40 generations to domesticate the fox into a pet status. They are easy to litter box train BUT you can never ever leave them unattended in the house. The fox is a very playful animal so anything and everything is a toy. They are chewers too. Mine was in a playful mood when I was working on the computer and she took a chunk out of my chair to get my attention. They are very lovable animals and very rewarding but are high maintenance.
A fox like this will most likely die if it ran away for 1: its domesticated, IT HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO LIVE IN THE WILD, it doesn't have the skills to survive.
and 2 : its obviously not reliable off leash (yet) but taking it off a leash is like taking a untrained dog off a leash and see what happens in that short span of freedom, more or less life. ;o
Just saw this...holy lordy that's a beaut. My daughter is in love with foxes...foxen...whatever. Been thinking long & hard about trying to domesticate one. Does it stay inside with you guys or do you have an exterior enclosure?
@jarvis3205 Don't try to domesticate one yourself, if you're not a professional and very patient it will end up just cruel to the animal. There are breeders of domesticated foxes, though, who have been well cared for and raised around humans; this would be the best, and most humane, choice. While it can be expensive I understand that pet foxes are very rewarding additions to the family. Just remember, if daughter moves out, the fox is still someone's responsibility. 10+ year lifespan.
@Crazyredemu it depends on if it's domesticated or not. The domesticated foxes from russia, which I believe are the only ones legal to import/export, have been through selective breeding to make them act like dogs. They even move around with their tail like a dog would, I can send you a link to a vid on youtube if you'd like :)
@Crazyredemu I'm not saying foxes can't act like cats, I'm saying they can act like dogs. The fact that you happen to own a pet fox, which happens to act like a cat proves nothing, I'm just pointing out that what you're saying "they dont act like dogs" is a gross generalization, and partially wrong.
where do you live, where is it legal 2 keep a fox?

This fox doesn't seem to care a bit about its owner. I wonder if it would run away if it get off the leash.
