  • great combo of vocals!

  • Steve Perry yum

  • hell that guitar solo!

  • I love hearing Steve's voice just wonderful.

  • heh the only wrong note in the whole thing is gregg rolie's at the very end. wow - freaking amazing piece.

  • Still blown away by the guitar solo here.

  • Mariet, I'm a huge fan of JRNY, the fucking best group on Earth! Thanks for your fantastic videos!! Only for comment, I think this show in Monitro was the last gig of Aynsley Dunbar with the group

  • This sounds so Sgt Pepper's in places. Fantastic stuff.

  • More like "I Want You - She's So Heavy" from Abbey Road. But Neal Schon just absolutely s-m-o-k-e-s on this cut!

  • Infinity and Evolution were MAGIC !! I Love these guys!! And I don't mean just Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie- love Neal Schon- Ross Valory and Steve Smith

  • A perfect example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.

  • From 3:45 on I challenge anyone to find a better live guitar expression in existence. I think only Hendrix's machine gun from Band of Gypsies is at the same level.

  • its very hot i must admit, but UFO strangers in the night is a better expression of taste and style on several tracks

  • Comment removed

  • A great live album but.... UFO took those live tracks from strangers into the studio and dubbed over and remixed some of the the original tracks to get that perfect sound. Especially Schenker's solo's.

  • Good singers..!!

  • Pathetic? You stupid fucking moron. His voice was golden in 1994. Better than EVER.

  • yes, indeed! I'll rather want to see Greg than steve back in journey. Just like the old times. Greg rocked

  • neil schon and ace frehley best control and use of vibrato i have ever heard.

  • track down the first few journey albums-- they're BEYOND AWESOME.

  • Why does no one comment on this 3:45 LIVE guitar solo? It is one of only a handful of live expressions out there that's on par with Hendrix's "Machine Gun", IMO.

  • Nothing wrong with Perrys voice. It's his "choice" to either sing or not sing. I agree with everyone here. There is no question about Steve Perrys ability. It's a shame that Journey went on without him...

  • If you only knew! The jig is up. Perry's done!

  • You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

#1: Perry is working on a new album.

#2: Randy Jackson (Yes, the one of American Idol fame) recently spoke of how Steve Perry "still having" his voice.

You are being ridiculous spreading lies. His hip is bad, his voice is not.

  • hey texasrokker, i dont wanna fight with you but i read a few articles with randy jackson saying that he has lunch with steve perry every so often and that he went to "the" studio and heard some of the stuff steve was working on and called it "some hot stuff". and also, like i said earlier- i dont wanna fight but- steve did have to have the hip worked on. just my thoughts on the matter. thanks.

  • 3:45, that's the sickest guitar solo I've ever heard- and it's live. It's like the tone of hellfire...

  • thegorn68:

At least this conversation is all about the music and the people singing it, which is what these comment sections are meant for. Take a peak at: Journey "Wheel In the Sky" by LockOnNow, and look at the crap they're talking about. I actually agree with you, but you need to retype every word you just wrote here, over there.

  • Never ceases to amaze me what people fight and get in heated arguments about in the comment sections on YouTube. A freakin' Journey song for Christ's sake!!! It's no wonder humankind has been going to war and killing one another.

  • ...Plus TR, SP nor anyone from his camp, has said that he is coming out with a NEW album this yr. The only mention of new material is the fact that some pple. close to him have heard some of his new songs. Sony (NOT SP), is releasing a new SP GH CD in Jan. '09. You're right, Karma is a bitch, isn't it...for Neal. He would have given a limb to have SP back, but in their heyday when SP was begging for a vocal break, HH & Neal wouldn't hear of it...so instead, they're on their #3 new singer.

  • Texas-I'm calling Bullshit on just about everything you've said. You "know a couple of these guys". Right! Pls. name ONE vocal coach Perry's been to, or even site a credible source as to where this info. is coming from. Perry can ABSOLUTELY sing those GR songs you mentioned. ANYONE can. I love GR, but he can't sing Perry's stuff. Who cares if SP can't replicate his own 30yr. old voice from 30 yrs. ago? He did it then, no denying it. Noone else can replicate his voice from 'then' either.

  • Great, Mariet

  • my last comment i take back gregs vocie would not be right for the songs they have now

  • Thanks for uploading this very vintage & COOL tune from Steve & Gregg!

  • Not quite the quality of the Infinity album. Kind of Beatleesque, but since they're not the Beatles the song basically blows.

It's where their prog-rock met the new Perry thing, and needless to say, the Perry thing was more viable (and better IMO).

  • Something happened during the 70's, relative to music (Besides the drugs). It was like a self-realization period for musicians. You don't HAVE to look like the Beatles. You don't HAVE to stick to the predictable tempo, or the rhyme. Whatever it was, it resulted in the most important metamorphosis of music since the introduction of Rock. Rock became a sub-genre genre. Instead of just being rock it became southern, pop, psychodelic, folk, on-and-on... Brilliance ensued!

  • Awesome!! they shoud've put this on Infinity..It ROCKS!! Thanks for posting it, mariet2!

  • Now that is a very 70's sounding song. I agree the best decade for music was the 70's. There was so much creativity, origniality and diversity. I think the last 20 years of music have been horrible and the last 10 have plain sucked. It's just a bunch of sad remakes of once great songs and every band sounds exactly the same! I have to say the youth of today are the most unoriginal and lack any sense of musicality. Yep, like everything else music has been dumbed down for the masses.

  • I love the early Journey with Greg Rollie at the helm. This is definitely classic material.

One of many of San Francisco's best bands to emerge in the 70s...the best decade for rock and roll. And many great bands came from the SF bay area.

  • when steve left in 96 they should have brought greg back as lead singer

  • Love Gregg and Steve together, especially Just The Same Way and Feelin' That Way. Their vocals meshed/contrasted wonderfully.

Gregg's a great baritone as evidenced by his lead vocals on "Black Magic Woman" from his Santana days. But if he had come back he wouldn't have been able to sing Steve's high tenor songs.

It'd be 'The Best of Both Worlds" if Steve fronted a band with Gregg on keyboards and Steve Smith on drums, plus Van Hagar's Sammy and Michael Anthony on guitar and bass respectively!

  • TEXASROKKER, Here is what I said:

"Gregg's a great baritone as evidenced by his lead vocals from his Santana days. But if he rejoined Journey as Perry's replacement, he wouldn't be able to sing Steve's high tenor songs".

What I said is ABSOLUTE FACT: there's NOTHING in that statement to dispute. I even praised Rolie, but made no comment on Perry's ability to sing Rolie's Santana hits!

SP's voice might not be "right" for Santana, but he WOULD be vocally-able to sing those lower notes.

  • TEXASROKKER,

And HOW would YOU know this about the voice coaches. And as Joe Friday says in 'Dragnet'..."Just the FACTS, please".

    Thanks.

  • hey texasrokker are you seriously stupid or have you been sniffing your mom's panties??you think our voices are the same every decade that goes by??perry can come back and sing more into crooner type music and let me tell you something,he would sell far more albums than the current journey, you stupid fucking dummy..

  • You know, it's better to have people think you're stupid than to remove all doubt. You've removed all doubt. Thanks!

  • With recordings like this, Journey has definitely earned their spot in the RRHOF. This is the VERY BEST of Journey with Gregg Rolie, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon.

  • I don't think I've ever heard a live peformance guitar solo that's better than this.

  • ungodly...

  • Perry and Rollie, what a team - love this video.

  • fantastic - Neal totally on fire here - this is how to rock :)

  • Gregg was/is one of kind. I still favor the 77-80 Journey albums when Rolie was with hem. Some of the greates melodic music was created.

  • Me too. Even though Rolie recommended Cain to Journey, lol.

  • That was great but I have to tell you this can't be San Mateo on Sept. 2nd 1978 as Journey played at a "Day On The Green" (outdoor festival concert series that used to be held in the Oakland Coliseum) on that date. I know because I was there and I still have the ticket stub. To be sure check Wikipedia and search Day On The Green. Still great post Neil shows his usual great jamming from that period. Saw Journey live 3 times in 78 all great shows, not the soft band they became a few years later!

  • Neal is a crazy guy but his musical talent is never in question, he is utterly exceptional.

  • Pretty cool. Neal always burning it up.
