I'm all for defending the katana 's honor, I got 3 of them myself. But to the ones that say you can block a bullet relies that if you do manage to do so, you will now have two (if not more) bullet wounds.
It is not amazing at all that it split bullets cause if you shoot any sword with bullet, even with a kitchen knife, the bullet would split in half because the bullet is so powerful.
Katana withstanding 7 bullets is not remarkable at all. Any people who knows a little about swords know that Katana is nortorious for beling easily broken in battle. It was not very flexible nor hard.
European long sword will porbably last longer then japanese katana.

holy crap. 5 lead bullets before it shows major structural singing, 7 before it gives. i thought that the katana would not have a chance against a single one of these, i am genuinely impressed. whoever forged that particular blade should be very, very proud of themselves. consider the kinetic energy impacted through toroidal force (the bullet spinning as it hits the blade). incredible.
it is true that the katana was a great sword, as you can see in this video, but also fragile to chipping.
and it is true, full plate made you practically immune to sword attack, especially curved ones like the katana. to counter they used hammers and maces.
plus fechtkunst (martial arts used by knights) tough many techniques to attack at the joint sections, and to grapple people in armor.
speed was esential, knights not always carried armor
Actually, it's a German word, and not a Dutch one. The Dutch language is practically a combination of German, French and Scandinavian languages. Also, they did not use the word or this technique in ancient Japan, but in medieval Europe.
I didn't really meant it as a question to correct. Just wondered where it came from and when / why it was used. Why wouldn't every country have it's own name for it.
Well duh, of course it survived multiple hits, bullets are designed to fragment on impact. But the Katana was still going to lose. I mean, it's a freakin' .50. That kind of energy is going to rip through just about anything.
Considering the fact that Katanas have always been considered swords of low-quality material compared to both Spanish(the main source of good swords in europe) and Persian swords, that's not a surprise.
Katana is not built to take punishment (steel vs steel) like Europeans swords are. Remember, normal good swords were supposed to be hit against Armor,Shields, other swords. Katana isn't built for that, it can't realy compare in it's quality to other swords of it's age.
Well, katanas were able to pierce armor, but the way war was done changed and therefore the katana became useless as weapon of war.
Even though they did break and weren't made for beating steel on steel, they were the best swords at the time. They may have chipped in battle, but rarely became unusable.
LOL you are joking right? Have you ever wielded a true Japanese katana? itll go straight through an Persian sword, even through the spanish steel...
The reason being the way the tip was hardened around the core... Japanese katanas were always considered to be of the highest quality because iron was rare and they worked alot harder on making the few swords that they could make.
ARE YOU SERIOUS? Why else would there be a katana? Fight trees? They're meant to fight against steel, that's why Japanese swords last hundreds and possibly thousands of years, after much wearing down, there's a bunch of galleries of ancient Japanese Katana, and you don't see those for Spanish or Persian swords, do you?
come on man havent you seen the size of that machine gun it can kill an elefant is not fair and if katana cuts a bullet the bullet will not hit you because the form of the edge V changes the angle and directions of the bullet and on close range a Katana is the deadliest weapon even more than a 9mm
Ya, i wonder what force you will be dealing with. There is no way this could save your life. Lets say only one bullets gets fired, it gets halfed (so there are 2 projectiles now, and they are razor sharp!), the pieces of katan and bullet hit you at high speed..and yea little chance.
The same exact effect will occur when this experiment is done with a hatchet or dull axe. It does not say anything about the Katana. A bullet moves very rapidly and is relatively soft when compared with a piece of steel. Thus at it's very high velocity it strikes the piece of hard angular steel and fragments big whoop. Yes some people are sad in that they can't get out of fantasy/anime land and except reality unfortunate isn't it.
I don't see anything amazing about it. All it shows is a bullet when hitting a very hard stationary angular piece of steel will fragment. I would like to point out that this dosn't stop these fragments from slamming into the cement wall behind it. Hence hypothetical Samurai gets hosed. And after the first round too.
Some people are just sad arent they, they aint got a life so when they've found somthing that loadz of people like and enjoy them come in and sh*t on it for them ! and for you information when samurai wrods were developed there were no guns and a trained samurai could dodge an arrow so up yours :D
That is pretty amazing. That's one tough sword. Cuts 6 bullets and the seventh hit breaks it. But only because it's already worn away. Seriously very impressive.
It doesn't seems to be amzing on real speed, but on slomotion it indeed looks amazing, which it really is.
You gotta keep in mind this is a .50 , which can take down trees and such. The other version of this vid they test a 9mm bullet vs a katana. Unfortunatly youtube keeps me from uploading and showing it.
it not only took 7 bullets...it took 7 .50 cal BMG bullets...

It's a great sword. I thing they were war ammunitions, not lead bullets. The lead would be split in half, as the famous "gun bullett test".

@dlxowns322 But it's not the point to see if a lead bullet destroys object X.
The point is to show that bullet splitting can be done as shown in movies and animations.
Katana's only broke when used wrongly. That's why they also used pikes and other weapons like any sensible army would.

Are you saying they use that word in ancient japan or what?

I'd say knowing that the katana cannot win is clear enough. But this video is not about that. It is to bust the Hollywood myth.
They should do another test with hardened bullets.

This needs to be done with the Euro swords and the
persian for those who think they are better. For a
handy home test try cutting a bowling ball in half
with one stroke with your wonder sword.

Also to be considered is the fact that swords in general aren't meant to take punishment with something bearing that much KE.

spritz3r 4 years ago
Wrong. They are made to slash or stab weak spots in armour such as arm pits, neck, wrist etc. Slashing usually done on the neck area.
Iron armour posed a problem for the katanas. Katanas would get stuck and the tip would break off getting it out.
Please do your research before you make an ungrounded comment.

like claiming the superiority of spanish or persian swords without any facts to back the claim up?

If the machine gun was only shooting at one place all he has to do is to move a few inches away from where the bullet was landing. :D

Yes, it fragments. But you missed the first three bullets, which were sliced in half by the katana. An axe couldn't do that.
sekiryu 4 years ago
This is not about life saving. It's about movie action and bullet dodging you see in games (metalgear solid).
And the stationary peace of steel is not just a peace of steel..but you already know i guess.
Keep in mind it's fireing a 50cal belt into it.
