GOG! Born uo north amongst slate and monutains But left ( I'r Gad !!) home one day lad nothing changes. people get older, mountains never change, I'll never change-no mater where i wake...
What a great song. I come from near Bleanau ffestiniog and My father was a quarry man until recently. It wasn,t coal dust or coal dust but Granite that my father brought home in his lungs, and on his clothes and in his hair too. I now live in manchester and have been singing this song for 25 years. and when I do thats when the HIRAETH hits me. If your welsh you'll know what I mean Martin ap cornelius.
I love this song, I was brought up with it, I'm from Mountain Ash and the men in the family worked in the pits, but years later I went to live in the Rhondda.
I remember as a kid staying with an Aunt near to Ponty. An old guy who was a fiend of my Aunt would take me for long walks up mountain Ash and tell me about the Welsh Saga's and sing Max Boyce songs. Happy Days, every thing was better then.
Thanks for posting this. This is a beautiful rendition which stirs up feelings of the first time I saw Max in the early 70's. However, as I recall, Max sang "They call it Rhondda Grey" whereas this version seems to say "It's a sort of Rhondda Grey" I think it has much less impact. Despite this reservation, great song and a great performance. Thanks again!
I always think of a retired collier I know when I hear this song, I'm the grandson of a welsh collier and a proud Welshman myself and this song really strikes a cord with me, must be in the blood.
i hav always loved this song you hav done a good job.its a very moving song both my grandfathers went underground at the age of 13 even tho its titled rhondda grey it appropriate to all othe mining valleys in south wales
thank you for putting a video to this song...I have known Max (Boyce) for over 25 years and I always consider this as one of his best ever..has Max seen it yet? what did he think??
As far as i know Max has not seen it - you will have to show him. Its me singing the vocals, i have done a cover of the song that i put to the video. It is my grandad who worked underground in the Rhondda Valleys.
thanks for posting this...great to here this song...and so well done....i left my "tools on the bar in 1986"when they shut our pit down....hard but good days
Brilliant this. At times I thought it was Max himself singing it, and I can't think of any higher compliment. Keep it up and please release an album or at least a few singles.
i left my heart in the green rhondda valleys about 15 years ago. Never thought they were grey though, spring awakening in wales is an experience i'll never forget : the light, the colours, peace
