from my limited knowledge, Sunni believe in the Caliphate/Successors to the Prophet (s.a.w), whereas Shia belive Hazrat Ali (r.a) should have been first, and the family of the Prophet (s.a.w) thereafter. maybe OP will clarify.
The main difference is not of personalities succeeding the Holy Prophet SAWW but the fact that successorship is ONLY appointed by Allah SWT.

I am Muslim first and then my beliefs are Shia. I love the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W, Ahle Beyt, and 12 Imams as every Muslim should! Until you love the Ahle Beyt, you are not loving the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W. Sunni or Shia, it is obligatory upon you to defend our Holy Prophet first. When "they" drop bombs on us, you think they first ask if we are Sunni or Shia? Labbayk Ya Hussain!

What's the best way to attack Islam? we need people to understand 2 things...sunni's and al-qaeda are two different groups. Al-qaeda are warped wahabbi who hate all those who will not listen to them. Sunni are killed by them as well, but they especially hate shias. Brother I am a MUSLIM then SUNNI but i think attrocities against SHIA's should be condemnd.
I am Pakistani and my best friend is SHIA. I think its not sunnis or shias against each other in Pakistan and all over world in general. But there are some SUNNI and SHIA black sheeps on both sides who give provoking statements to create disturbance and weaken MUSLIMS on the whole. How would you (re)unite the Muslim ummah?
(As in you yourself).
In my opinion, you can only unite any people upon a standard belief (Aqeedah) not upon race or culture. Once again in a respectful* debate to discover the truth that Muhammad (saw) brought to us from Allah for us to adhear to in our live and to live happily together as ONE ummah - not to show up and attempt to reinforce differences.

Whats wrong with the ummah of the Prophet(pbuh) being called Muslims ?
Man himself has made these sects and divided the Ummah. The Prophet(pbuh) did say that his Ummah will be divided into 73 sects, but he did not divide them, this is the doing of man with the help of Shaytan.
The Ummah of the Prophet(pbuh) should unite under one name, that name is Muslim.
Allah warns those who divide into sects (6:159).
Allah has warned us, it's our decision.

We can only unite if we come to common grounds (shia and sunni not the wahhabis). Shias and Sunnis both respect the Principals of Imam Hussain stood for... I believe Unity can only come under the Banner of Imam Hussain. Allah has blessed me with a son and I have named him Haider Ali in respect of the Ahle Bayt. Ive heard comments that sunnis were responsible for Karbala and from Sunnis I hear that it was Shias... how can anybody say that never judge a book by its cover for allah knows INTENTIONS

Yet we moan about sects... there is no mention in any scriptures that Imam Hussain was Sunni or Shia because these are minor to the SACRIFICE given in KARBALA. from my limited knowledge, Sunni believe in the Caliphate/Successors to the Prophet (s.a.w), whereas Shia belive Hazrat Ali (r.a) should have been first, and the family of the Prophet (s.a.w) thereafter. maybe OP will clarify.

The main difference is not of personalities succeeding the Holy Prophet SAWW but the fact that successorship is ONLY appointed by Allah SWT.
Followers of Ahlul Bayt A.S acknowledge the appointment of Imam Ali A.S as a divine appointment from Allah SWT which makes it obligatory to follow him A.S.
The non shia believe that "mankind" has the choice of electing its leaders after the Holy Prophet SAWW.
