Thanks for posting. Ms. Bavan was my dad's first wife and I only discovered she was a renown entertainer a few years ago. I have a few old pics of her I plan to compile in a video and post of she and my pops in London where they lived. Thanks again!
Wow, Lambert's moves rival Michael's. And when he's standing just keeping time, he's got that thing going of staying on the backs of both heels and tapping his toes side to side on the off-beats. Try it (not easy). Ironic that he ultimately didn't get out of the way of an irresponsible driver. And the sad ends of Eddie Jefferson and Clarence Beeks. But Hendricks remains the eternal optimist. This must be with Bavan at Newport. I think Annie Ross may still be at it but never a great solo act.
Fantastic performance by the seminal super group that kept it's intensity after Annie left due to health problems. Yolande is marvelous as are Jon and Dave.
Thank you for posting this vid. It's a big nostalgia flash for me becauseI saw them live at Basin Street East in NYC when I was there for two weeks, my 18th birthday present from my parents. I was in the audience when they were recording the Live At Basin St. East album.
Yolande invited me and my two Louisville friends over to her apartment on St. Marks Place for ice cream one afternoon. A truly charming, talented lady who also acted Shakespeare at the Old Vic Theater in London.
This was jazz, sophisticated, intelligent, soulful. Lambert,Hendricks,&Bavan made music for those uptown and the high society. You have to look high and low to find music like this today. Very few aspire to master this genre. Sadly, this is an art that could use a heart transplant. This was the real lounge music to chill with.
Someday maybe YouTube will get the footage of "Lambert, Hendricks, Ross & Thomas". As in LEON Thomas. Right now the only place I know to see that footage is at The Museum of Television & Radio in NYC or Beverly Hills. It's amazing. Leon does his thing but it fits right in somehow!
I agree about Annie holding her ground, she's still singing in NYC>>>Does anyone remember when it was Lambert, Hendrix & Moss (Anne Marie Moss, then Jackie Paris' wife)??????
If you compare this to the one where Annie Ross is included, you can see that Bavan is vocally not as pristine as Ross, nor is she as animated or comedic. Not to mention she isn't as attractive.
I'd like to see anyone follow Annie Ross and hold their ground... I think she did a great job considering... epecially considering today that there aren't so many vocalists who specialize in REAL vocalese (meaning doing original material, studying the original solos and writing their own lyrics.)
Except for not having those lead trumpet shakes, Bavan was pretty good (and attractive). Wonder what happened to her--and why the group couldn't make it without Ross.
Jon wrote and put on a play in San francisco, i think it was called "The Birthof the Blues"; it was a huge success. After that he went on the road, doing solo stuff and also vocal group stuff. I sang in the group in the mid 80's.
Jon Hendricks is 85, and still makes occasional appearances with various groups including LHR redux, which features Jon, his daughter Aria, and John Burke. I saw them earlier this year in Nashville. It was definitely the greatest concert I've seen.
It is alleged that 'Bavan' took over from Annie Ross because too much of the group's expense account was being squandered by her on 'nose candy'. Jon Hendricks divulged this is an interview last time he performed in the UK.
Annie Ross was also a superb actor - starring in a TV drama series with John Cuthbertson & Ricky Fulton ("I'm Back!") - and I even have a cookery book written by her!
When was the last time you saw a singer in a sari ?

Yolanda Bavan rocks. Just listen to the live recording "AT NEWPORT '63". Her high notes are sweet & clean. But don't get me wrong Annie is great.

They're great, but I prefer Annie Ross in the mix. If you dig these cats, try listening to the "Double Six of Paris".
