I flew on a Yak-40 from Tbilisi to Baku in 1986. During the flight, one of the crew came out of the cockpit and sat by the door; he proceeded to put his elbow on the door handle and go to sleep! A loud bell sounded in the cockpit and another crew member came running out and shouted at the sleeping crew member.
By the time we got to Baku the air pressure inside was so bad that I couldn't hear very well for about 24 hours. As I wrote in my diary at the time, "Aeroflot has ceased to be funny."
A stable, and friendly aircraft to fly. Within normal parameters of performance envelope it is very responsive to control inputs, and will not "bite" you unless you do something stupid. Excellent Soviet era aircraft.
Read the description. One of the nick names was "kerosene exterminator". So the fuel efficiency wasn't great. Also by that time turbo jet engines were giving way to turbofans that are more efficient and quiet. That's why it didn't really became a big hit on world wide markets. One of the advantages was its ability to operate from unimproved airfields. But by then it was only important to Russia and 3-rd world countries.
May be. But it was built more then forty years ago. Economic was not so depending on fuel prises. And the pies needed in small plane on the ways of small extension. Yes, you are right, in countries of 3-d word it was very important, especially in inclement conditions.

fantastic airplane. rugged, fuel efficient and comfortable (for its time). Too bad a bunch weren't imported to the West.
