Sure, 500W is a bit more than half a horsepower, but then again so are some horses probably. 500W is from my checkings *extremely* unusual.

The point I'm making is basically that a motorbike is a whole different scale. 1/2 a horsepower is in the same league as 500W, bit like saying no no this isn't a 40W bulb it's 60W when comparing this to a 10kW stadium light. Pissing in the ocean.

Well not entirely. Weight and power output are two different things which influence speed.

In terms of power density, fossil fuels just shame electric batteries. Compressed air has the same power to weight as a lead acid battery.

What I'm suggesting is that the power-weight factor of the human-machine combo requires sufficient weight addition via the electric bits to require the machine to output more power than a person would make a difference to...

The weight of a top-spec MTB is about 8kg. A person weighs about 70kg and puts out about 1/2 a bhp peak.

A suzuki hayabusa weighs 260kg and stock puts out 194bhp peak as stock, 500+bhp with mods. The 1/2 hp potentially added by the rider is irrelevant.

The whole reason why electric vehicles are only just getting warmed up is because of the power density in the storage. You have to lug batteries around. Lead acid and Nickel Cadmium just don't have the density. LiPoly is usable but still heavy

Well, it's the question of whether it should have pedals.

The amount of power the motor has to put out to move the weight of the rider is like 10hp, it's an electric trials bike. Compared to a fossil powered trials bike it's underpowered, expensive & heavy, a 50cc trials bike is faster & lighter, but makes a buzzing sound & runs on gas.

I completely agree with the design decision to go motor only considering it puts out probably 5hp min judging by how it moves.

If you tried to build a 500bhp vehicle using lead acid batteries which would run 24 hours without charging, it probably would weigh *at least* 50 tons.

On the other hand, a 5cc model helicopter engine which weighs about 12g puts out 1kW.

Don't get me wrong, I love HPV, but the trick there is reducing drag, friction and weight.

Engineering fully powered vehicles is about power vs weight.

Hybrid Human/electric is OK, both my old folks ride 'em, but I can thrash them on my hardtail road bike...

incidentally, there is a german one of these which does have pedals which actuate the throttle, and also trickle charge the engine as you go along.

I personally thought that was a bit silly. My feeling on the matter is that you either go for an ultra lightweight HPV, people have an amazing power to weight.

Or you strap on a 15kg battery + 5kg motor, produce 5-10hp (7.4kW) and use your human power to steer & balance. A motoGP rider has to be very very fit indeed to hold onto hundreds of HP...

Human powered isn't a lot of power, and it's best kept pure on a mechanically simple & light machine, rather than mixing it with petrol/electricity.

Electric motorbikes ride like bicycles/get overtaken by pro-cyclists because their power to weight is closer to a bike's figure than a modern motorbike because of the batteries.

Adding human power on top of a "high" powered e-bike's output of 5-10hp won't make it go much faster, and instead will add parts & friction to the mechanism.

Electrics are definitely here and getting better too. Check out the vids for the Quantya. Only down side at the moment is the price. Quantya's are selling for 10k US. Too expensive for most people for something that provides a fraction of the performance of a less expensive gas powered bike.
