  • very educational! we love english!! (greece) ;-)

  • I've a problem understanding the tenses used in the following sentences. The question in my mind is “Why use ‘HAVE HAD’ or ‘HAD HAD’ ??? Why not just 'HAVE' or 'HAD'?":

  • @groundzerobuild

    GOOD Question! Really.

I've had a pain in my back for a couple years, but I've had it all my life!

But there are a million other usages. This is just a common one

  • @groundzerobuild . Two weeks ago, I had had a pain in my back for three weeks. I thought it would go away, but it didn't. Now I have had a pain in my back for five weeks.

  • Well, lots of similar examples, which is great, but no explanations of why

people use "did you" vs "have done"

  • To all Non-Native Speaker's Of English (like me :-) )... Get a copy of : "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy.

Just Go through this and that will take care of all your Grammar Questions about Tenses like has, have, had, did, going to, will, etc. and their relative differences and also all explanations are supported by good example and Exercise to practice. Great Book indeed!!

  • @tango2olo Good point! We have also been using this book at my school for a very long time.

Also, don't miss the Real English grammar exposés on the Real English lesson site.

  • Thanks for teaching us English online. I have a question about 2 sentences I read from a newspaper. Please explain why the sentences use 'past tense'- appeared; said. 1. It's about time you appeared. 2. It's about time I said good-bye. Would you mind to explain? Thanks a lot.

  • That's a good question, since the past tense is not logical, but both sentences are certainly correct. I will send you a message to your inbox because it is too complicated to explain in 500 letters and spaces.

  • This morning I wasted my time watching this video and laughing for no reason. Yesterday, I wouldn't have understood why I watched this video.

  • Thanks! I have understand it. I konw the diferent between have done and did. I mean that I can't understand the interviwer, the person who make questions. He or she quickly speaks and it's dificult to hear him or her. It's dificult when he/she says "what have you done?". I have to train my ears!! haha

    Good Bye!!

  • > He or she quickly speaks and

    > it's dificult to hear him or her.

    > It's dificult when he/she says

    > "what have you done?".

That's wht it's called "Real English"

    > I have to train my ears!! haha

Listen listen listen - to real people speaking normally, and Have Fun!

  • it seems to me she/he says " what did u done..." :S

  • @realenglish1 Sorry, but I think He or she speaks quickly and it's difficult to understand him or her. That's why it's called "Real English"

  • I couldn't understand when he ask with "have done". He quickly wondered them. I'm learnig english and these videos are very helpful.

  • The difference between "have done" and "did"? Let's simplify:

    1 -

Q: What have you done this morning?

A: I've shopped (She might not be finished shopping).

    2 -

Q: What did you do this morning?

A: I shopped (the shopping is finished).

  • oh i'm get it thans.

  • I always have trouble using between 'did' and 'have'

  • Hi Rinwhr,

Most of the videos have lessons which illustrate and explain the verb tenses, but I haven't made the exercises for this video yet. I will do the lesson for this one soon, and I will tell you when it is on the Real English site.

  • Hi Sarah - I thought you had spent some time in France before settling in Japan... And on a different note, I sincerely wish I had the time to volunteer to do the French version of your scripts. The Daily Englisg show deserves all the collaboration it can get.

  • I lived with a family in Blois too! Wow, what a coincidence.

  • hey, I love the outfits:)

  • Anyone in particular?
