I've found mustard green's as my most succesfull and plentiful vegatable. Last's ya all through winter, and can even work its way up till the end of spring..
Have you ever tried grown Atlantic Giant Pumpkins? Those are what i'm into, and thses suckers can get purdy heavy! World Record was set last year at 1,810 pounds!
Donald. Nice video as always. I lost you for a while, I don't know what happened I know I subscribe to your channel for some reason it got lost .now I found you. Thank goodness.
@sakinehbs ... didn't know I was lost but at least now I'm found. LOL Glad you enjoy the videos. I'm looking forward to 2011, hope everyone has a good season in the garden.........Donald
DUDE... you are on it with your videos. FABULOUS! I wish my Papa was still alive to see your videos with me. THANK YOU FOR SHARING your love for the south and gardening!
@webcajun hey dude nice vids , but i preffer the life at city , and why you say in all you're replys at the end ......Donald , Just because it's you're name? :)
I have been reading up on gardening. Right now I am learning about saving seeds. I have read that different varieties of plants have to be seperated if you intend on saving the seeds. For example, on book said that varieties of squash need to be seperated by a half mile. I wanted to know, from you experience, how true is this?
Not sure about the distance cause it does vary from veg to veg but it is true. When I want to save my seeds I only plant the one variety. Make sure it's not a hybrid. I'll have a video coming out soon on saving tomato seeds. Tomatoes are a little different then other vegetables....... Donald
I think I'm gonna try growing mustard greens next spring. Yours look fantastic Donald. I hear that they're delicious with a little diced onion and bacon?
Onion, bacon, salt, pepper and a few shots of hot sauce. You can even add a few drops of vinegar. Cook a cornbread to go with that and you have a complete meal. Plant your seeds as soon as you can work the soil. They love cold weather. Cut today and harvest again in a few weeks. They keep going and going and going............ Donald
OH! Sounds like swiss chard. It survives literally past the first frost. Sounds like mustard greens would be a great idea for this far north. Thanks Donald! :)
Two questions: When you plow the previous garden under, how long does it take for the plants to decompose? And, how deep is your top soil? Great job, and fun vids!!
How fast it decomposes depends on how fine you chop it up. Some things like corn or okra stalks take a lot longer. If I had to guess I'd say at least 3-6 months.
The closer you get to the bayou the deeper the rich top soil is. Again I guessing here but the front part of the garden may be 18-24 inches and the back part may only be 8-12 inches deep. The deeper you plow the more you mix the sand and clay for a better soil. A half mile down the road, conditions may change...... Donald
Everything looks wonderful. Always a treat to see when a new vid is up. Why do you transplant the onion bulbs? The worm tea sure makes a difference. Thanks for sharing.
Transplanting the onion bulbs allows me to space them out 6-8 inches apart. These things are huge and need the room to grow. They average 1 lb. + and that's a big onion........ Donald
looking good. Didn't plant anything in the fall this year. giving the soil some rest to add nutrients but
in mid February, I'll have something in the ground to get a early start. the only thing I'm worried about is, it might be too cold then. In North Carolina, it's cold in Feb., so do you think anything will grow in real cold weather?
Down here in Lousisana we start our Irish Potatoes in January and transplant onion bulbs in Ferbuary. Check a planting guide from your area and it'll tell you what you can put in the ground.
To me it looks like you use the same patch of soil for all your veg. How do you keep it fertile if you use it all the year around? Do you manure it and let it rest from time to time, or do you just rely on worm castings and compost?
Hey Donald enjoyed the video. I have been getting alot of collards from my garden. I like to cook them with cabbage and some salt pork. man there are good. I picked 3 heads of broccoli we ate one with some Ranch dressing and I blanched and froze the other 2. My onions are doing good. I set out 85 transplants and they all made it. I have gotten a few turnip and hope to have soem for Thanksgiving. Have a Good Thanksgiving, Robert
Hey Robert ... there's nothing like vegetables fresh out the garden. Sounds like your fall garden is doing very well. Yall have a good Thanksgiving too....... Donald
Start them in pots then transplant in the garden approx 6 weeks later. Usually takes between 70-90 days to mature depending on the variety......... Donald
Birds in the garden hadn't been a problem. Thay have eaten some of my seedlings in the peat pots that I started in my shop. Bird netting helped with that problem. Try hanging some old CDs in the garden where they can spin around in the wind.......... Donald
snowed here two times already was hoping i would get some ratishes before it did but oh well. New Mexico is cold in winter time.. as many do not know. it does get below 0 here. and gets as hot as 110-120 here in the summer time.. what a flex for the south eh.. wow I would be using the worm tea for sure it looked like a big differance on the video... Come on worms :) Good worms.... lol
I've been feeding the little boogers like crazy. They are getting fat and having a bunch of babies. I'd name em but there just too many.......... Donald
Been watchin your vids for about 6 monthsnow and i live in west houston. Woul like to get a little something in the ground. I had the same thing with your peas, with ny water melon and sunflowers. Great vids and hope to see much much more of you wonderful garden. BTW How did the upside down cucumbers do??
Hey Keney... The upside down cucumbers did well until the heat wave hit us in June. This year when it starts warming up I'll start planting them in the garden instead of on the rack......... Donald
This is the one site where I can get into the video so much that when its over, it like I've come back from a nice time. Know what I mean? Thanks Donald!
Do you ever have problems with deer grazing in your garden? Despite it being hunting season, we still have problems with deer outside and occasionally in town. So far, they haven't bothered my little 21' X 24' spot, but they're getting bolder.
On the way home from work last week, I counted 14 deer in a pasture, about a mile from my home.
Some folks have put up tall electric fences. I'd just as soon shoot them, but I can't do that in town.
Deer know better than to come too close to a Cajun. I've never seen one on this property and I grew up here. An electric fence would work very well to keep them out.......... Donald
This is an incredible garden you keep! Do you sell to the public or is this all family garden? If it is a private garden -- how in the world do you put all that produce up?
Also, it sounds as if you have a year-round gardening season? You are very luck indeed.
