i've found a good solution to what you put on the front of your softbox to diffuse the light...nylon rip stop. if you get a square of fabric bigger than your softbox, you can sew thin round elastic cord into a seam and then just stretch it over the front of your softbox, no tape needed! it holds itself on. any fabric store carries rip stop and elastic and both are cheap. the nylon is great as it comes in tons of colours and it's the perfect thickness for basic lighting.
I along with the others just want to say your video is fantastic, you presented well, are articulate, good video skills. I along with the others will save a lot of money, using your method, thanks a lot and I look forward to more of your tuturials, and other video skill tips
@chean91 Well you can use either a small generator if you have the money, or a car battery with an power inverter to be able to use a normal 110v outlet.
@chean91 one of those things you have in a car to convert the cigarette outlet 12v dc to normal wall plug 110v ac. you can get em online or at a hardware store
@zim4xbox Also, I used small binder clips to hold the paper on. Like the ones used to hold large wads of paper together. Im using this light in my current video on my channel.
the way how the light is spilling in the ''softbox'' is simply bullshit. why? because of the fact that he leave´s the reflectiv shield on, the light can never spill around and fill the whole softbox that is why this is more or less useless
@CountryMaster16 well thats not really true, if i am understanding you correctly. the light does fill the whole softbox, and does its job in softening and evening out the light. in the video it looks like there is one light spot, but in fact that is just the auto-exposure adjusting to the bright light. for a moment after i turn it on, before the camera adjusts, you can see how it looks to the eye.
@Purdyc12393 mesure it with an lightmeter you will get about 1 1 and 1/2 stop dirence or more in the corners because the shield really increases the fillfactor of the light try it once without the shield and you will see what i mean
A really cool idea and a great video as well. I just wondered, as you've had time to use it now, does it get very hot? I worry that if it was left on for a while it might overheat either the tape or the cardboard?
Great job, I might do this myself. Except instead of tapping the parchment paper or fabric you could Velcro it. That would make things much easier, especially when you need to change the light bulb. Thanks.
Damn, that was a great Tutorial, I learn a lot about how to build a Softbox. Buy one of these softbox are too many expensive. Thanks for that ^^ "Thumbs UP!"
You know what you could do whenever you started building or assembling something? Put some mood music. That really kicks up a notch the quality of the videos. Really liked the DIY though, nice.
I just made this using foam board. One huge problem (and it may be because I didn't make it out of cardboard). The problem is that it weighs down the light scoop. No matter how tight I tighten the hinge, it always falls forward, lighting only my floor. Again, it may be because of material I used. Can't imagine cardboard being much lighter, though.
@sonne5 by that do you mean the can light keeps tilting down?Maybe it is a problem with the ball and sockety deal. Those seem to fall apart pretty quickly...
I'd love to try making this, except for what one reviewer said: Cardboard is unsafe. I suppose it could catch fire if you used a hot enough light. Probably be ok though if you really put a lot of foil around the cardboard.
@mrbobdude101: CFL bulbs do conduct heat, just not as much as a regular light bulb. The only lights i can think of that dont conduct heat are LED lights. The are cool to the touch but kind of pricey.
i just built this from your tutorial not 15 min ago, and what really did the trick for me was a new all white t-shirt for the scrim on the outside. and then i just attached it to the box using c-47s
Awsome Job on that softbox and because I learned something from you, I will teach you something in return.
For the parchment paper attachment use stick on velcro you can pick it up at the dollar store. that way you can take off the parchment or silk and still have access to the lightbulb.
i just used some green poster board and keyed it out in final cut. its not perfect but it works. but if you are always going to be using a white background, a bedsheet with some strong lights(worklights) works good. then i would mess around with the contrast and such in post so you cannot see any wrinkles.
The bulb is a compact flourescent or cfl, the ones that are like a swirly shape. you could just use a normal bulb but i think the cfls have a more white lite.
Just wanted to stop by and say thanks! Yours was by far the best tutorial on making a softbox. I changed it up a little bit using white nylon fabric and making the box a little wider/deeper but my lighting has been greatly improved. Thanks man and keep up the tutorials.
Nice work. But Isn´t it easier to get a foodcover and make a hole in the middle for the light. Also put some white cloth on the inside and on the front. It's much firmer than your cardboard.
