I think part of the reason most of elliott's live performances were bad vocally, was because of the mic used. A condenser mic is much better suited to his voice. Usually, he uses a dynamic mic live. Here he uses a condenser mic, hence the good performance.
Sometimes you just need to sit back, turn on Elliott Smith, and cry. Even if you have nothing to cry about, if you are in the right mindset, the tears will come. And they may be tears of sadness, or of anger, or even of happiness, but the specifics don't matter. What matters is that small window that you have to truly feel human. It's a rare, rare thing, and it's rather beautiful.

@HarlanKristofferson1 i have a version of real pleayer that download every single video that i watch on youtube, then i choose the ones that i want and use an audio converter to change the videos into songs
One of my favorite artists ever and just about my favorite lyricist ever. I don't know how he did it. There are certain lyrics in many of his songs that illustrate how I personally felt at points in my life, and he puts it into words better than I ever could. So amazing.
No, but it is sick that you would rather him be dead. I'm sure his friends and family would also harshly disagree with you, as they had to endure the pain of his suicide the most.
it's not about glorifying suicide i believe, it's about people making choices. believe me, i believe he thought about his family, his friends, consequences but sometimes the strain is just too much. I don't think suicide is an easy option out, i respect him for his music and for his decision. And sorry if i sounded abrupt, no harm intended.
Not to be too sentimental and read too much into it.. haha... but at 2:21, when he finishes such a great performace... it just ENDS.... there's no crowd cheering, no people clapping, he doesn't say "Thank You", he doesn't even smile... its just silent, and that seems to me (in a very strange way that I can't really explain) to be a microcosm of his whole life. Anyways, very intimate and lonely moment.
@VTHokie1001k 2 Meter Sessions was conducted similar to Live at Abbey Road. There was never a live studio audience. I simply meant that transition from one song to the other is very Elliot Smith, if that makes sense.
love it,man you gotta be really bent on killing yourself to stab yourself in the chest. For some people living is agreater challenge than dying, many people see suicide as a cowardly act but think about actually killing yourself and it becomes much more complicated. I once heard a Nagasaki blast survivor (victim) speak of her sister's suicide in front of train and of her own desire to live that 'it takes one kind of courage to kill one self and another kind of to kill yourself, a noble sentiment
When it shows a reflection of his hands off of the piano, during Miss Misery, it struck me that that is our reality...that all we have now is a reflection of Elliot in his music. Yet like so many brilliant beings that have graced this planet before him(Nietzsche, Tesla, Jesus, Kurt Cobain, etc.), Elliot clearly had trouble being human. Too sincere, too creative, too honest, too original...it's almost impossible to survive survival when you're all of these things.
i wish i had more thumbs so i could give this more than two thumbs up! btw i'm dieing to play I didn't understand on piano, anyone have/ know where i can get the score????????? PLEASE!! Thank you for choosing elliott
Jimi Hendrix said it best when he said "there's two types of music, good and bad" so please, who cares if he's emo, or folkm, or whatever. His music is beautiful no matter what category you put it in. Why argue about the unecessary?
thank you for uploading this. I was lucky to see him play during a power outtage in Nashville; on stage in complete darkness, no power to the sound system; just Elliott playing guitar and singing... amazed at how a large room, hundreds of people, could be so absolutely quiet.
I just watched this video all the way thru. The piano in "I Didn't Understand" was like Mozart, for goodness sake. Elliot's brilliance is shocking. He was a genious.
Beautiful version of this song. I was lucky enough to see him live many times. I loved the early days, at the Crocodile, just him and a guitar and a half empty room... everyone sitting on the floor. Everyone there new Elliott was something different. Pure songwriters are rare. He is missed.
Just curious. How tall was Elliott in person? He looks like he was relatively small. Anyway, I am sad that I never got a chance to see him live, but I think hands down he's the best in years. You'd have to go back to Dylan or the Beatles to match him; nobody these days comes even close.
Of course his music is something. What a stupid thing to say. I didn't call Elliott Smith Emo? I described him as an emotive songwriter. I think there is a difference. I agree that he is a genius who didn't fit into convention bullshit that the music industry seems so full of.
Elliott Smith is just about the perfect emotive songwriter and its sad to think the pain his words could convey would be the possible reason why he isn't living today? I miss him
I love going to look at the video comments, and realize its not just me who feels like this about his music. there was something about him and his music, that can never be repeated.
I don't care what anyone says, and in no way to disrespect anyone or Elliott himself but this is REAL "Emo" to me. Emotional, he had real problems unlike most bands who write emotional songs. His real feelings and problems poured out into his music, which is why I like it so much. Btw, my favorite song by him, nice video!
My two favorite Elliiott songs, in one beautiful mini-concert.

It is kind of sick that you would want to wish him back to life. He already had to go through the harsh pains in life. Just let it alone.
