  • My two favorite Elliiott songs, in one beautiful mini-concert.

  • elliott is the only musician who can make curse words sound beautiful, RIP man.

  • Amazing! I wish it was in sync :(

  • Such a beautiful performance

  • don't read too much into this one love. i just enjoy this video, and i think you will as well.

  • I think part of the reason most of elliott's live performances were bad vocally, was because of the mic used. A condenser mic is much better suited to his voice. Usually, he uses a dynamic mic live. Here he uses a condenser mic, hence the good performance.

  • Sometimes you just need to sit back, turn on Elliott Smith, and cry. Even if you have nothing to cry about, if you are in the right mindset, the tears will come. And they may be tears of sadness, or of anger, or even of happiness, but the specifics don't matter. What matters is that small window that you have to truly feel human. It's a rare, rare thing, and it's rather beautiful.

  • @QuinnMyers: well said.

  • If you read this I miss you,

please talk to me because I dont know how

    to talk to you x

  • does someone know where I could find the MP3 files of these two wonderful piano versions?

  • @zedinho74 I Use A Program Called Free Youtube To Mp3 Converter, I Saw A Video On Here That Showed Where To Get It But I Can't Really Remember Which Video It Was. You Can Take Any Video Off Youtube And Convert It Into A Mp3. It Works Pretty Good For Me. Hope This Helps

  • @HarlanKristofferson1 Cheers mate, I did something similar now I can listen to them whenever and wherever I want !!! I am sooo so happy !

  • @HarlanKristofferson1 i have a version of real pleayer that download every single video that i watch on youtube, then i choose the ones that i want and use an audio converter to change the videos into songs

  • hm... it's out of sync. :(

  • One of my favorite artists ever and just about my favorite lyricist ever. I don't know how he did it. There are certain lyrics in many of his songs that illustrate how I personally felt at points in my life, and he puts it into words better than I ever could. So amazing.

  • It is kind of sick that you would want to wish him back to life. He already had to go through the harsh pains in life. Just let it alone.

  • No, but it is sick that you would rather him be dead. I'm sure his friends and family would also harshly disagree with you, as they had to endure the pain of his suicide the most.

  • @stellarlove21 shut the eff up... he made his choices, respect them, let him be a regard his music, honour the music, not the artist.

  • Didn't say I wasn't honoring the music, just saying that it's not right to glorify suicide.

  • it's not about glorifying suicide i believe, it's about people making choices. believe me, i believe he thought about his family, his friends, consequences but sometimes the strain is just too much. I don't think suicide is an easy option out, i respect him for his music and for his decision. And sorry if i sounded abrupt, no harm intended.

  • Hello Elliott, where are you today?

    Up in heaven? Dreaming away?

  • I wish I could bring Elliott Smith back to life, he'd understand...hold my hand.

    (thx Graham)

  • This man has influenced my life in so many ways.

  • Does anyone have the audio version of this performance but at a better quality than used in this video?

  • heart breaking :(

  • "I Didn't Understand" on the piano - what a treat.

  • This song is a prefect example of why Elliott was such an incredible musician.

  • Gracias Elliott Smith por haber sido un excelente músico, descansa en paz

  • fantastic!

  • great!

  • Not to be too sentimental and read too much into it.. haha... but at 2:21, when he finishes such a great performace... it just ENDS.... there's no crowd cheering, no people clapping, he doesn't say "Thank You", he doesn't even smile... its just silent, and that seems to me (in a very strange way that I can't really explain) to be a microcosm of his whole life. Anyways, very intimate and lonely moment.

  • That is a wise remark.

    Respect

  • i just noticed that seen this like 5 times

  • yea same here, you cant get sick of that performance :)

  • @sirnathan Pretty sure that's because he isn't playing in front of a crowd its for a tv show, he's in a studio.

  • @VTHokie1001k 2 Meter Sessions was conducted similar to Live at Abbey Road. There was never a live studio audience. I simply meant that transition from one song to the other is very Elliot Smith, if that makes sense.

  • i LOVE this ver. of miss misery!

  • i would give my own life to have Elliott back

  • Get to it.

  • already tried

  • you didn't try as hard as elliot

  • Touche

  • elliot thank you for you soul:)

  • this is better than the original of both songs

  • These are priceless and essential, but no: The sound collage on XO is brilliant, and the production on Miss Misery is to my ear right on the money.

  • omg! elliott we miss you so so much! so so much! :(

  • wow! I didn't even miss the backup vocals on I didn't understand. elliott rules!

  • It´s always the same.

only the best die young ( tim hardin , lennon

eliott smith ) i think this is the best recording from "miss misery" because it is a pianosong

  • For the love of humanity do not take this down!

  • Just in case, on imeem there's the full audio clip of this song.

  • Much thanks for that information!

  • This is flat out amazing...nothing else I can say, its amazing. May Elliott Smith The beautiful human being, and legendary musician RIP.

  • FOr real...amazing. I found emotions i never knew about when I started listening to Elliott Smith.

  • Elliott's talent and style is phenomenal. Its like Crosby Stlls and Nash, The Beach Boys and The Beatles all in one person.

This take of I did'nt understand and Miss Misery is both haunting and beautiful. Viva Elliott

  • I can truly relate to this song.

  • isn't that hard :]

  • it brings tears...

  • 'Cos my feelings never change a bit

    I always feel like shit

I don't know why, I guess that I just do

Miss you Elliott, we understand! RIP buddy!

  • where can i get this version of I Didnt Understand?

  • I can send it to you if you give me your msn

  • its on the XO album i believe

  • i love this interview.

  • btw, both of these versions are on the (expensive) 'B sides' cd

  • oops, meant to say, 'one kind of courage to live and a different kind of courage to kill yourself'..is what she said.

  • love it,man you gotta be really bent on killing yourself to stab yourself in the chest. For some people living is agreater challenge than dying, many people see suicide as a cowardly act but think about actually killing yourself and it becomes much more complicated. I once heard a Nagasaki blast survivor (victim) speak of her sister's suicide in front of train and of her own desire to live that 'it takes one kind of courage to kill one self and another kind of to kill yourself, a noble sentiment

  • beautiful

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • This performance gets me everytime.

  • I like this version of I didn't understand with the piano a lot better then the album version

  • *sigh*

  • Does anybody know how to play this version of Miss Misery on the piano?

    Or at least the chords?

  • sooo coool , and great songs, just like that, wow........afraid to say: miss the music, that's not comin' anymore......DAMN!!!

  • so fucking amazing..

  • I can't get these songs out of my head-they are both so beautiful. Anybody know if the piano music is available?

  • he's so unique.

  • absolutely amazing RIP elliott

  • Ouch, pretty into the soul.

  • THE GREATEST.

  • heavenly

  • The interview is in part one and as with most of his interviews, it's not very informative.

  • music is nice as is elliott playing but NO VIDEO INTERVIEW AS STATED!!!!!

  • When it shows a reflection of his hands off of the piano, during Miss Misery, it struck me that that is our reality...that all we have now is a reflection of Elliot in his music. Yet like so many brilliant beings that have graced this planet before him(Nietzsche, Tesla, Jesus, Kurt Cobain, etc.), Elliot clearly had trouble being human. Too sincere, too creative, too honest, too original...it's almost impossible to survive survival when you're all of these things.

  • simply perfect

  • I love this video, such great performances of both songs

  • i wish i had more thumbs so i could give this more than two thumbs up! btw i'm dieing to play I didn't understand on piano, anyone have/ know where i can get the score????????? PLEASE!! Thank you for choosing elliott

  • Miss Misery on piano = < 3

  • Goddamn!! Love Elliott!! Lives on in our hearts always!

  • beautiful!

  • the first version of I Didn't Understand I've heard, and much better than the album version!!!

  • What a beautiful version of I didnt understand..

  • Jimi Hendrix said it best when he said "there's two types of music, good and bad" so please, who cares if he's emo, or folkm, or whatever. His music is beautiful no matter what category you put it in. Why argue about the unecessary?

ok. . a big hug to all E.S. listeners.

  • i couldn't agree more.

  • Hug you back bro, God bless

  • you always see elliott playing yamahas... of course his guitar,, piano, drums, etc

  • Just go down and see the Rustomire comment. So true it hurts.

  • thank you for uploading this. I was lucky to see him play during a power outtage in Nashville; on stage in complete darkness, no power to the sound system; just Elliott playing guitar and singing... amazed at how a large room, hundreds of people, could be so absolutely quiet.

  • That was the saddest thing I've seen or heard in a while.

    Miss you Elliot!

  • I just watched this video all the way thru. The piano in "I Didn't Understand" was like Mozart, for goodness sake. Elliot's brilliance is shocking. He was a genious.

  • Beautiful version of this song. I was lucky enough to see him live many times. I loved the early days, at the Crocodile, just him and a guitar and a half empty room... everyone sitting on the floor. Everyone there new Elliott was something different. Pure songwriters are rare. He is missed.

  • Just curious. How tall was Elliott in person? He looks like he was relatively small. Anyway, I am sad that I never got a chance to see him live, but I think hands down he's the best in years. You'd have to go back to Dylan or the Beatles to match him; nobody these days comes even close.

  • I read somewhere that he was about 5ft 8

  • people would tell me that he was small i think 5'6

  • according to IMDB he was 5'9.

  • now that's a cool comment

  • sometimes i dont even like some of his songs but i´m always impressed with the mans words and manners

  • how can you comment on this music, your comments don't even exist next to this

  • Wow I Just Went threw all the comments and they were all good even the bad People had something good to write

about him Because I mean I <3 Him. Man... Hes Like the best ever No musician can ever take his songs away.

  • Nice observation. He's got good vibes, even from the grave. Seems to have an effect on everyone.

  • Of course his music is something. What a stupid thing to say. I didn't call Elliott Smith Emo? I described him as an emotive songwriter. I think there is a difference. I agree that he is a genius who didn't fit into convention bullshit that the music industry seems so full of.

  • his music isnt anythin, emo hell no, folk no, pop, get a life. its just genious, amazing, its in a class of its own.

  • Elliott Smith is just about the perfect emotive songwriter and its sad to think the pain his words could convey would be the possible reason why he isn't living today? I miss him

  • wow, i've never seen this, just so good ... definately the best songwriter of my generation

  • I love going to look at the video comments, and realize its not just me who feels like this about his music. there was something about him and his music, that can never be repeated.

  • oh god, its so good

  • He didnt reinvent music, he didnt need to

  • YOU MAKE ME BREATHE ELLIOTT.

  • its not emo you dooche its folk people these days

  • Elliott Has a Class Of His Own its Called Genious And its not folk Idiot How can something so beautiful Be folk? or country Lol

  • he described himself as pop. i just call it great music

  • He is beyond everything, literally :(

  • ladies and gentlemen, the best artist who has and ever will live.... :'(

  • I love how he looks around before Miss Misery ;)

  • hmm i never thought of it as emo as much as pop and great pop ..

  • pop...never. it categorizes itself.

  • I don't care what anyone says, and in no way to disrespect anyone or Elliott himself but this is REAL "Emo" to me. Emotional, he had real problems unlike most bands who write emotional songs. His real feelings and problems poured out into his music, which is why I like it so much. Btw, my favorite song by him, nice video!

  • yea ...i second that...this is real emo....but his music is almost too good to categorize

  • rest in peace elliott.

    this was amazing.

  • check out bad astronauts version of needle in the hay, it facking rules

  • legend

  • John?

  • same thought

  • haha what i was thinkin..

  • This clip just reminds me how amazing of a musician he really was. Guitar, piano, drums etc...There wasn't anything he couldn't play. Brilliant!

  • thanks! dank je! brilliant ^^

  • pure talent
