Nobody set a scene like Bob Costas---except maybe Dick Enberg. NBA on NBC added to the experience in a way that ESPN/ABC just hasn't been able to match.
Heyyo, you want Magic, Jordan and Bird on Showtime NBA on NBC The Game? then pick them up on CHAMPTV. I have their stats that me and my cousin(dahitman23)made in the description section on my channel. Please rate them and let me know what you think about them, peace and enjoy.
I hope ABC loses the NBA....Its unwatchable.... I have seriously lost interest watching any NBA game on ESPN or ABC.......NBA on NBC was freaking amazing.
Yep... who would you rather have as your play by play man - Marv Albert or Mike Breen, LOL. NBA on TNT is way better because of the presentation, it's too bad they can't get the Finals.
I loved the NBA on NBC. I also loved the opening animation. Maybe it's because I helped the graphic artists with the rendering when it was put together. I remember watching as they wire framed the sequence, mixed in the video clips, and made it work with the music. All I did was network the systems together and made sure the rendering process worked. It took 2-days in 1991 to render the entire opening. The graphics folks did phenomenal work!!
I don't know, I am not a graphics artist. I was just the programmer who helped them get the job done. Today, computes are powerful enough that the type of work we did to have the animation rendered in 1991 is not necessary.
Agreed! At least Bill Walton isn't calling the games anymore. I still say Marv Albert has got to be one of THE BEST announcers for the NBA games........
"Oh!! A spec-TACULAR move, by Michael JORDAN!!!!!"
ace11rothstein - All the players you mentioned didn't reach the peak of their careers and popularity till the 90s. The 90s, spearheaded by Michael Jordan, also brought higher revenue, ratings, and GLOBAL popularity to NBA basketball than the 80s ever did. You comment respectfully makes no sense.
Talk about a non-sequester...what the hell does showing games on tape delay have to do with coverage? If anything, it shows more unfairness, because it's making basketball secondary.
And I'm still not sure where your basis is for NBC displaying a bias, other than "I say it loud, therefore I'm right." My point is, if NBC had a bias, so did CBS.
And even if you want to make the corporate argument, there were many more potential sponsors in the 90s than the 80s. Blame the times, not NBC.
Tape delay implies that CBS wouldn't interrupt normal programming to show NBA games. So if CBS was "biased", they weren't biased to the level of NBC was making MJ and the Bulls center stage then later Kobe, Shaq and the Lakers center stage. Both NBC and ABC are promoting the teams from big markets in order to boost corporate profits and no one can honestly deny that.
Of course, why should anyone regard someone who can't spell NON SEQUITUR?
I love the 90s era, it's fans, players, and their overall passion and love for the game of basketball.
Nowadays, most overpaid athletes are prematurely anointed by the media and fans as "superstars". They all share some undeserved sense of accomplishment. Lebron and Kobe get more credit for "carrying" their teams to the finals and losing than the teams that actually won!! Blasphemous!!
It was in the 90s that the NBA started its decline. Most of the talent that deserved to be celebrated came out of the 1980s where the competition was much fiercer. MJ, Karl Malone, Ewing, Stockton, Pippen, Rodman Drexler, and Hakeem all started in the 80s and that competitive spirit carried over.
It was in the 1990s that the game slowed to a screeching halt (because of the Knicks and Bulls) which no one liked.
That's great. I hope you can do it soon. Thanks. For some reason, I enjoyed that game. I think I was 8 or 9 at the time that game happened. That game gave Chicago the momentum the rest of the 91' series. And the next 5 years they won the title.
OOOH, A SPECTACULAR MOVE BY MICHAEL JORDAN!!--love Marv Albert. I definitely on board with all the NBA on NBC lovers. Please bring back the NBA on NBC...with Marv Albert of course.

This may sound stupid, but if you were to make an opening intro for the NBA today, what would it look like? Just curious...

This comment has received too many negative votes show
And NBC helped to destroy what once was an incredible game due to the pro-MJ, pro-Lakers spin on everything. Disgusting!
And ABC has carried on the tradition with the pro-LeBron, pro-Kobe, pro-Laker spin.
ace11rothstein 3 years ago
Dude, you serious?
CBS had just as much of a pro-Celtics/Lakers, Magic/Bird spin as NBC did for Jordan.

Actually no, CBS showed a lot of its NBA games on tape delay and was MUCH fairer in coverage than corporate tools NBC and ABC.

@ace11rothstein Big market teams + Big market players = Big market ratings.
TheTFReview 4 months ago
@TheTFReview They can get ratings by letting the Kardashians play the 2nd quarter. That doesn't mean they have to sell out to do that.
ace11rothstein 3 months ago
@ace11rothstein That is how the entertainment industry works.
TheTFReview 3 months ago
@ace11rothstein The reason for all this is simple: the bigger stars get more national airtime because
a.) They're more recognizable, and
b.) Their teams are doing good.
