There was a few reasons that it was being (or was) closed down.
#1 - Full of airplane Traffic. Many people want to visit Hong Kong, and it was too small to handle so much...
#2 - Dangerous Location. If you look at its location in this city, you'll understand why. It was very difficult to land at the airport, especially in bad weather conditions. Look at YouTube videos.
#3 - Crowded. Many buildings could not reach a certain number of stories, and it was dangerous to fly over tall buildings...

If there's one thing I have to say I don't like is flying through a thick cloud bank especially at night. I just don't like the helpless falling/shaking feeling. But nice video and great quality.
@LammmHD As a kid I always go to HK to see my parents - my father worked for MOD within the British Government. The first time I went there summer 1976 during my school holiday I was scared when the plane I was in went down that I thought it was going to crash into these flats until it landed on the runway which come out into the sea.
I know very well that it was the old Kai Tak which I miss very much and I know most people will miss it very much too. RIP Kai Tak.

Great shots! Many altitudes on the descent-could also experience the varying perception relative to altitude. It was fun seeing the spoilers and slats-the flight control surfaces at work, and the many families on board seemed happy to arrive! Hong Kong looks like a beautiful city. I never heard of the two bridges the Tsing Ma looks very long a lot like the Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco. Nice labeling! A very interesting video to watch overall, thank you for sharing!
This video just goes to show how far away the new Hong Kong airport is away from the city compared to Kai Tak. What airline was this and where were you flying from? :)
Yep, recently I bought a Sony DSC-T90 the one which has touch screen. They sell an accesory which you conect to the camera, when you take a picture it records the exact position where you took it, as what you saw in this video. This accesory costs about AUD250 plus the camera -AUD550- It's not worth of money.
lol i no if you fly from the south all you see is mountains and sea, every time i go hong kong i always wish that it would fly fly over they city and land on that side of the runway but this is only occasionally...
Probably Lufthanse, due to the white wings. And the engines are not RR, There are no Lufthansa-747 with RR. Also, there is no sign on the winglet. That also indicates, that this is a Lufthansa jet.
AFAIK the md11 has a pretty high landing speed due to its rather small wings compared to its weight. Its landing speed can sometimes be at 170 knots...

What's the usual final approach speed for a 747-400? Thanks. . ..
flyguy281 3 years ago
Between 140 and 160 knots. Depends how heavy the plane is and what settings the pilot uses (flaps)
OCXEON 3 years ago
Yeah. Thanks, that's weird though that it has a lower final approach speed than the MD-11. . .

trent8002003 3 years ago
JAL has Japans red dot on the wing tips. But these wing tips are plain white so JAL is off the list.
EVA AIR wing tips are green not white
Thai wing tips are purple so it cant be it.
So my final guess is that its Lufthansa.
