Assignats were paper money issued by the National Assembly in France during the French Revolution. The assignats were issued after the confiscation of church properties in 1790 because the government was bankrupt. The government thought that the financial problems could be solved by printing certificates representing the value of church properties. These church lands became known as biens nationaux. Assignats were used to successfully retire a significant portion of the national debt .
The hospital here, which is owned by the Catholic Church, claimed that because they were a charitable organization they were exempt from property taxes totaling $1,100,000. When the state looked into the case they found that of an income of some $113,478.000 only seven tenths of one percent went to what they called charitable care.
This amounted to only $850,000. Had they been granted exemption of the tax, they would have made a profit of some $250,000. The tax exemption laws are stupid and must be abolished. Thankfully the state saw the lunacy of these claims and rejected the application.
