  • We like We enjoyed. Thanks.

  • hurray! complimenti ,molto bravo

  • At first, I thought this is going to be total disaster, but the more i listen, the more i like it, very nice drum solo! Keep it up!

  • Very nice playing mate! Jazz is all about mixing it up - demonstrated here perfectly

  • Your a great Jazz drummer! Thanks for posting man, keep up the good work!

  • the guitarist needs to drop out for your solo would of been sweet then, and jazz bass plays minimalistic. then after solo , guitar comes back in with the head of the piece, but i like your playing kinda minimalistic, gd job

  • blood

    the soul

    only

    Play Five

  • @demo2026 I'm sorry. I'm not understanding your comment. Please elaborate.

  • This Kicks ASS very smooth on the ear.. and takes you for a stroll along memory Lane and back.. Fantastic version..

  • its odd you did hi hat chick on 3 and 5 at the start then subtly change it to 2 and 4. :P i enjoy the 2 and 4 much more! nice work man

  • I notice that you do a linear double flam, starting with a kick...when I do this I start with the left foot...right foot....left stick on snare and right stick on spash..crash or ride. My quesion is this: What actually is it called? Im a self taught drummer and I picked this linear type double flam many years ago. I notice you use it often and quite effectively . You are one of the best "unknown" Pro drummers Ive heard on here. Love to listen to you~!

  • Sexcellent job! What kind of ride symbol you got there?

  • @jdubs024 Its a Sabian 20" Duo Ride.

  • I love your playing, I only wish play the drums like that, Love it!!!!! Thanks for this vid =)

  • Shit, this is awesome.

  • Sme tune u hve there i like the way u play it smooth and effertless

"I got this guys i got this cool"

    Sweet beats

  • Funked out??? I don't see the funkiness but if that's what it is this is the only funk I've heard that is worth a damn. Great arrangement and performance!

  • Thanks! Actually, just before the song started I told the guys to open up, forget about the original and approach it in a Steve Coleman and Five Elements vibe. Unfortunatly, the guys are limited in their abilities so I ended up being the only one grooving it out, displacing beats, etc. They stayed true to the original. I think it still came out cool though. It could have been sick though. Peace!

  • Drums are excellent. A bit of sustain and vibrato might have helped the guitar sing like the sax would but I can't complain, it's done better than I could do it.

  • I love the sound of your snare drum? What is it?

  • It is a Pearl 5x14 free floating maple snare in natural finish to match the kit. I have white Remo Emperor Suede heads on the snare as well as the toms.

  • Like it? man I love it!!! good job!!!

  • Good cover,i really like it ;)

  • Nice man, really smooth.

I find it really tricky to play in 5/4, i'd love to learn though.

    Peace

  • Sweet groove man! real smooth and cool!

  • i really liked it, i don't it's as bad as they say, greetings from mexico :D

  • wot?

blood tests on this guy now..I don't think he's human....

  • It was good, it kept getting better as it went.

  • I've watched a plenty of your videos today and I'm really impressed. Your feel and technique is really inspiring, especially after a few hours of practice. I've been playing drums for 4 years now and got really serious about a year ago (started taking lessons and practicing really hard) I can imagine how much work it takes to play like that. Cheers man, keep on playing and putting your videos on youtube.

  • Complimenti! io di batteristi bravi ne ho visti ed ascoltati, ma, bravi come Billy non ne ho mai visti!

    Veramente complimenti!

  • Im sorry I dont understand your english?

  • I checked out your page. Are you even a musician or do you even know what the originial sounds like? Please answer in complete sentences instead of broken phrases filled with dots........

  • Sorry ... Just was not my liking your version ... I did not want to be offensive. Greetings.

Excuse my English, do not speak really well ... I speak Spanish .. bye..

  • Are those Duo Hats and Ride? Awesom, love the ride :D

  • haha nice

  • It would have been better if you had stayed in five...

  • hahaha

  • drum kit sounds great. he seems a little stiff but still can play!!

  • Funk in 5! Looooove it! Exquisite drumming!! Just beautiful!

  • Very nice..But.

I would liked to have seen the rest of the band. Sound was OK. not bad dude.

  • love it. The drumming is masterful. A little variation on guitar would've made this perfect, but this was amazing.

  • amazing drummin, would be awesome if there was some guitar improv =), cause thats a bit boring =P

  • Excellent. I love when the sound and video are synched up and this one is right on! Cool drumming too. I liked the cymbal hits that went with the guitar accents at 1:15.

  • That was damn good.

  • nice, but there is a point where you can become too professional and lose that certain element of magical connection with the drums. This guy is like others have said "a robot". He really needs to be groovin his body along with the song and show everyone that he is into it just as much as they are....if this is enjoying to them

  • YES, the video of the drummer looks like a he's a machine or robot. I'll bet he's a holographic projection, And I don't like the guitar either except as a rhythm section. You need a saxophone player and Dave Brubeck or Julius Csizmazia on the piano. However, this represents a great learning experience for any neophyte jazz musician. I like the bass solos and the intricate drumwork. Why don't you post some more videos, so we can really appreciate your wonderful compilations and work.

  • that's cool

  • I love the duo HH by Sabian they'rs lovely cymnals. Nice groove!

  • Well, great work on the drums! That is the way I used to dream of me accompanying Take Five!

However - not the best version of this song I have ever listened to... I dont like the guitars in it...

  • I find the guitars sound quite good

  • Dang, that makes me want to get my jazz playing back up and running. Gotta love it.

  • dude, awesome cover!!

I'd like to see a video of the whole band (if you can). Makes me want to cover this version too with my friends when we jam.

  • Actually, I liked the ride! I love a high frequency, a tone that cuts through! Besides if the camera was positioned elsewhere I'm guessing it would've sounded different. Anyway, great control, awesome job!

  • Really nice.

    The ride sounds a bit.....sticky.

    Has it got much use?

  • you are definetly the man. yea this is definetly one of the better variants of the drums on the song that ive seen. keep it up man.

  • I did some research after watching this video and found out that the guy playing was previously injured and had brain and spinal injuries that severely limited his ability to walk, talk or play. Very inspiring. He's looking good.

  • im not gunna lie i dont like the sound of that ride. but is a great cover.

  • Wow, that's great.

  • Great drumming...to high (drums sound) maybe

  • What's the song from 2:20 to 2:33 anyone knows?

    Can't remember the name

  • its Pursuance, 2nd track from Trane's A Love Supreme. What a sick quote!

  • Ah it's Resolution not Pursuance (but still 2nd track), thanks man! Great quote indeed, takes you to another dimension.

  • what is that in the middle of your ride?

what type of sabian is that?

  • It is a Sabian Duo Ride. Half finished and half raw.

  • Simply amazing. 5 stars indeed!

  • great! is it available for download at better quality?

  • No, Sorry.

  • GREAT Video!!!

    thanks

  • then you obviously know fuck all about drumming

  • hard moeller technique work¡¡¡

  • Fantastic.

  • I really like this version - the drum solo is terrific, and I'm a Joe Morello fan, but this is super.

I could listen to this all day...

  • great timing. great veriety. the whole set seems like one solo, or a demonstration. Overshadows the guitar's lead

  • Now I've seen Billy play with some MUSIC...lol! Very nice! Smooth and well-controlled. Those are some well studied fills and grooves. I would happily hire him for a session...I'm often given a hard time because I tend to be honest when honesty can go either way...lol. & I don't think he overplayed his part. The way the mics are positioned u primarily hear drums despite him playing lightly. Audience perspective could've sounded amazing. Just my opinion based on a grainy little YouTube vid. Peace!

  • all the musicians sounded awsome though i thought you were playing with yourself alot and not as as whole like everyone else but you did sometimes just not all the time ;)

  • Sorry guys, I didn't see whole video at first time. Well, nevermind... :)

  • ok...you agree, now?^^

p.s. you didn't seem toact like a fool..at the beginning i wanted to agree to your commment^^

  • And where the emotions go? C'mon this is music!

  • i think in such a track you can't drum like in a metal tune...

i really enjoyed his solos and i also somehow felt the emotions and passion...

    great vid!!!

  • Jazz is in my opinion the most emotional music... So you know, technique and skill are important but emotions as well. And I didn't mean acting like a fool, just showing some feelings in your playing style. Drummer is also an artist. :)

  • great, people hear are trying to bash you a bit, im assuming jealously. Its sounds fantastic to me

  • its a nice solo, but i think to busy and wrecks the style of the song. solo shud be a build up, when u start of flike that u go no where. but still very skillfull

  • nicee i love drumming like that just chillaxin kinda drumming haha i like ur set up too wish i had a set like that

  • Well....i feel you lose the rithm some time....

  • Good job,, nice kit, now solo in 5/4 without the music. Its a mind numbing experience.

I been playing since 65 when Take 5 came out. Play on.

  • Thanks! I'm looking forward to more great drumming from you.

  • very nice job, good drummer btw, but to me it sounds a little to fast, but still very nicely done... my compliments...

  • sounds to slow actually -_-

  • my compliments. I respect people with skills.

  • nice drumming

  • Muy bueno my Bro!!! saludos de Caracas Venezuela. Gustavo Marín

  • Nice job man¡¡ I love it¡¡

  • Your "solo" is out of time, but overall sounds pretty cool. Greet !

  • That makes no sence. Its in 5 the whole time.

    But thanks for the compliment.

  • It can still be off-beat in 5/4...i'm not saying it was though

  • man that snare sounds good... especially on the sidesticking. great job

  • that was damn good drumming

  • nice:)

  • cool

  • From Left to Right. 14" Duo Hats, 16" Thin Crash, 8" Duo Splash, 20" Duo Ride, 14" Thin Crash.

  • Please Can you name all the Cymbals, If you can.

  • Its actually Sabian Duo cymbals.

  • For whomever asked about his ride cymbal... It's a Hand-Hammered Sabian HHX... Not sure about the size though. Same with the rest of his cymbals. They have a great tone.

  • what kind of ride cymbal is that?

  • What an amazing drummer!

  • i think it IS properly applied:) i would love it if my drummer did it this way

  • Gabinoo, you said it brother. You are obviously a very talented musician. But, you did to this song what Steve Vai did to Red House by Hendrix. Technical virtuosity isn't worth a damn if not properly applied. You can say a lot more with a few carefully selected phrases rather than a flurry of noise.

  • The drumming is nice, but think a minute about what Morello did on the record : nicely warm and gentle musical phrases punctuated by silences. I think - considering the way you play (which is very good of course)- that in a way you spoil the melodic aspect of Take Five during your solo. Technique must serve the interest of music.

  • I think that was the point. Mr. Canty wasn't, in my opinion, trying to emulate what Morello did on his recordings. I'm sure Morello would appreciate what Mr. Canty did here, in that he thought outside of the box for a moment and did what HE felt was right, not what anyone else thought or did before. If I were a creator of a famous peice of music, I would love to see people take it and interpret it on their own to create something unique. Everything is beautiful in it's own way.

  • holy eff!! hahha. wow. you definitely speak on a whole other plane of existence during that drum solo. haha. I love how the poeple that don't understand keep saying that they couldn't feel the groove. I smell what you're steppin in...and it ain't poo.

  • nice!

  • I'm drumming this in the college band. Perhaps I could learn from you! Very well done!

  • Very well composed, keep up the good work!

  • very nicely tuned toms!

  • Great Job!!

  • Woo, some funky jazz drumming right there haha. I like it man.

  • I loved this song your version is amazing

  • Very good

  • wtf do i practice to get that good. this is amazing. i fucking love the solo i disagree with everybody that says that it needs to be less cluttered to fit the mood.

  • Thank you. Everyone has their own interpitation and this was mine on that night, at that moment. Only simple minded, blinder wearing drummers will not see what I was saying in my solo, or try not to get it.

  • suona molto pulito bravo!anche i passaggi sono molto precisi...complimenti

  • very well done

  • niniiiieeecceeeeeee, i like your kit =] may i have it?

  • very nice; how much?

  • that was perfect solo, excellent display of tension and release, i loved it, great thing that ur not right hand dominant drumming, i like that u switched to traditional grip for the toms

  • Man, I just fell in love with your drums, they sound soooo good :D and very nice solo, I enjoyed it.

  • NICE =D

though, i like morello's version better

  • I thought the solo was fitting.

Which means I have either more taste than everyone else here or none at all :(

    Great as always

  • This guy has zero chops<---sarcasm. Very musical and modern. Comin from a guy that listens to drummers all day (both talented and not so talented) I thought that was very tasty. Kudos bro.

  • Get some chopps buddy..

  • I will get right on that.....buddy.

  • I would say absolutely perfect apart from 6 seconds or so after 4:09. I just think something a bit less 'cluttered' would work better there.

But as it is, still a masterclass in reinterpreting a classic song.

  • very sweet playing, i like the hand hammered ride, are the hats hand hammered too? while the solo is amazing, it donsnt really fit in with the jazz feeling of the song. something slower and more minimalist would hav been more in line with the song.

  • great great great! perfect excellent..very very very good..kiss on your head!

  • Darn, I skipped a thought. Read my previous comment first.

It is ofcourse just my personal meaning, but I think that that style of playing goes from playing the drums to beating them.

And I also cannot find any bottom groove in the rest of that solo, which - as I stated earlier - I feel that there should be for such a long solo.

  • Hi again, señor =)

Annoying comment system, doesn't allow for in-depth study. =P

First off, I think that you might have misunderstood me earlier. I have no problem at all getting the groove in this song, which by the way is quite unusual for a 5/4-piece.

But it is the solo part starting at 03:35-ish that I find a bit random. Particularly at around 04:09 it sounds like you start focusing more on speed than groove for the following 6-7 seconds.

  • That would be correct.

  • Playing drums is not just about music. Its a primal instrument that can bring out inner emotions and thoughts.

I was hoping that you would get the solo but it keeps slipping right by you. Listen again.

  • I love and admire the amazing chops, but I'm not feelin the groove. I've read what people have written, and the argument that the solo is flawed for reasons brought up here is nonsense. It just doesn't seem to groove, I can't hear Billy layin' it down, which is all I want. But again, I love the chops, and the cymbals and drums sound fantastic.

  • haha :) I think everyone wishes it were that easy...I know I do, but really, if you listen to Joe Morello play this, you'll hear a very clear stable pulse--if you listen to any great drummer, or any musician, in fact, their internal pulse, confidence and time feel all collaborate to make a great groove. I just don't feel it here, and I know for a fact it's not a matter of how many times I've listened to it.

  • One suggestions is to play hi-hat with your heel raised up, because it gives a much more defined chick sound than when you play heel down. Heel down sounds a little lazy and is harder to get in sync with your other limbs, probably because of the longer route you must take to make a sound heel down than heel up.

  • For example, 48 or 49 seconds into the video, you falter a bit in your groove. It's things like that that I'm talking about.

  • Wow, Thanks for being so microscopic about my video. But...maybe you should listen some more with out Morello blinders on. You will get.

Thanks again for finding a flaw in my playing. Can you find some more for me so that I can better my playing?

  • I guess you got me there. This is as you insinuate a pointless argument and I was both foolish and (I now sadly realize) quite rude in initiating it. I'm sorry. I'll delete my last stuff, I should just be glad we have more guys out there playing the music anyway, and loving it. Thanks for putting up with me, good for you, and keep drumming.

  • I don't know any way to delete my last comments, but I hope my previous one made up for them, again, sorry.

  • I want people to pick apart my playing. I learn from it.

It happens to everyone all of the time. My point is, everyone needs to chill about each other. This video was a moment in time that is gone now. I decided last minute in the beginning of the performance to have a more loose, free, fusion jam in my approach to the song, ala Steve Coleman and Five Elements. It is what itis...Different.

Thats why I posted it. Anyone can play it like Morello. I choose to be Billy.

  • Hold up. I took absolutely everything you said in your comment that started with "Wow Thanks for being so microscopic" as complete and angry sarcasm. I just read it again, and can see that you could have been earnest...tell me which one you were, I hate that it's so hard to tell sarcasm online.

  • No, I was genuinely being nice. Whats to argue about?

    Its just music.

  • Oh thank God I felt terrible. Okay phew. Thank you. What kind of equipment you play here?

  • i like it =) .. it's not just "show drumming", it's real ly good music :>

  • pura mierda

  • This will actually be three comments, I'll arrange it so you can start reading at the top.

I'll try to explain further what I meant:

I didn't mean that you got out of beat, neither that I could have done any better, as someone commented. On the contrary, you seem to stay in the beat quite well. But I didn't hear any read thread in the drumming.

  • It didn't seem like you were drumming from a basis, if that made it more understandable. Like a main road that you take little detours from.

Shorter fills are too short to give me that feeling, but since that was a half minute solo, I thought that it started sounding a bit random, even though you got back on the beat brilliantly.

It's some of the same that you can hear - although much more distinct - in some highly technical, fast-paced metal drum solos.

  • They tend to focus more on speed and sound volume than musicality, and I personally think that drums is more of a music instrument than just pure backbeat. It's just as important with soulfull drumming as soulfull vocals, or guitar for that matter.

If it is still not clear what I mean, please reply to this comment, that way I get an e-mail notification and can explain further.

  • I appreciate your microscopic look and opinion about my playing on the video. Dont let people bother you about posting your opinion. You did it in a very educated fashion. To respond to all of your comments, I feel that you probably need to listen to the video alot more. I dont think you understand the "main road" that I chose to travel on. As far as the solo section, try listening some more. Thanks again and good luck.

  • amazing & very clever! and worthy. great job

  • Wow thats givin me a new love for jazz truly wonderful. i only hope i can be as good one day

  • yeah what he said ahaha

  • on the solo he is *techniqully * out but he does little snare hits or base shtos that instantly put him back in time and then he does another fill so really he was never out of time and he was in control of what he was doing because he immediatly got back into the beat

  • I call it space and time. Its happening like a engine. Everyone has to be aware of time. I am able to tell my story around the time and then meet back up with the engine. Then we all connect and groove.

  • I agree with you Lifemocker ...

  • Y'all are fuckin greedy... its okay to slip out of the beat as long as you come back right after!! i think this sounds really smooth , good one

  • I love how all these little bitches criticize like they could do better.

  • cool, I love the way the ride sounds omg :D

  • Ok, I didn't know it was in 5 X_x but...

(still kinda opinionated here) right at 3:53 you pause for a sec before you play the third tom drum, that seemed kind of odd to me. Also right at 4:10 you do some big tom fills, and that seemed out of place to me, with the style and everything. Hope this is more specific :)

Also, what cymbals are those? They sound amazing.

  • The cymbals are Sabians Duo Hand Hammered line

  • Man not bad, not bad at all.

  • Great playing indeed!

Gonna have to agree with SiegHallo though, that fill was pretty exaggerated, what was up with that?

And as for OneRiddum's comment, I feel the snare and hihats were making the song more exciting. If they were even and with the beat the song would get boring after a while, to me anyways...

  • Thanks, I listened, and closely watched 6 times to my solo at 3:40. I dont get it. What do you and SiegHallo not understand about what I am playing during the solo? The band is clearly playing in 5 and I am too. I am trying to figure out what fill you are talking about. Please be detailed so that I may help.

    Thanks again
