Awesome! I'm so excited about the ball too, have you checked the website? The theme this year is "Jewels of the Empire" which is awesome. No worries about dancing! They actually give free formal dance lessons a few hours before the ball to teach the basic steps (it's actually really simple!), plus the atmosphere is elegant but very relaxed. :D

Try your local Army Navy/Military Surplus/Airsoft store and see what they have, but it will probably be cheaper to order what you need online, so shop around and compare prices.

For anything leather, check the purse section at thrift stores and see if you can find one that's a good match (like Sheva's back pouch). It's also a great place to pick up inexpensive leather belts. Good luck! :)

I was the UBCS fellow from 3:20-3:21. Finding this footage was a delightful surprise. If I go next year, I will upgrade my outfit to include a beret with the 3" UBCS patch, a green shirt, and perhaps a closer approximation of the vest. Perhaps we will meet again. In the meantime, this was a well-made video and it seemed that you had fun with AWA.

That's why starting on cosplay far ahead of time (like you are) is important. You shouldn't feel rushed to finish it, or do it all at once- and can take breaks for a few weeks if you need too. ;)

Depending on where you live (close to AWA or far away) I'd recommend searching online to see if there's a convention closer to where you are to save on travel costs. ^_^

If you get the chance though AWA is really awesome. As for a room, the best thing to do is get a group of friends together who also want to attend the convention, and split the room cost between all of you. That's what most co-goers do. ;)

It's awesome that you're an experience con-goer! I'd recommend talking to some of your friends and seeing if they'd be interested in saving up and taking a trip together.

There's also Otakon in Baltimore, Maryland (which is huge but not as relaxing as AWA) and much closer to Canada. (Our group is large enough that our room is comfortably full so we wouldn't fit any extra people, and as a rule we only room with people we've known in person for awhile. Thanks for thinking of us though!) ^_^
