I thought this was neat...when I watched this portion, which ends with "4'33", the view count was at 4(1)33...whoa...
But aside, he does make a very poignant point about sound AND silence...too many people don't realize that unless you're in a vacuum, there is never truly silence - especially in today's world with the hum of lights and air conditioners.
I like the quote about trying to imitate nature "in its manner of operation." I take this to mean, trying to mirror nature as it actually namifests itself, rather than giving a stylized version of it's "perfected form," or how the composer thinks it could be or should be.
"Our intention is to affirm this life, not to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation but simply to wake up to the very life we're living, which is so excellent once one gets one's mind and one's desires out of its way and lets it act of its own accord."
It's hard to think of Cage as a composer rather than as a philosopher. :)
"... and then we start moving around, the way people do... with radios."

@NGS712
couldn't he be both?
one's being is so complex...it is difficult to attach a one-word label...

the only times i feel anything analagous to Cage's love for indiscriminate sounds is drifting in and out of sleep.
One can learn a lot from him
