I like the video player on "reggaelinx website"better, it allows you to zoom in and play in slow motion. Plus they allow you to play your own playlist. You guys should check it out.
hey clare! really enjoyed your vids. I'm on the lookout for reggae-people wanting to put up a web collaboration. Already posted some drumloops there, just check my profile & latest upload to follow my invitation :-)
good job. The only thing to add is when you muthe the strings with the left hand you must still play the down stroke for the dead sound. So you are really playing the stoke up and down on the right. It is the mute/un-mute on the left that gives the ska upbeat.
I'm looking for a guitar which is really well able to be playing hardcore punk (the old school so bad brains, murphy's law, MDC like instead of the newer stuff) together with ska.
I really would like to know I already thought about the Jackson SL3 soloist. With the seymour duncan JB in the bridge and two hot rails in the neck and middle.
i think you've got it backwards.. ska is usually like punk + reggae. and thus faster. reggae is usually chill, and by jamaicans (ska is usually punk white guys, hahah)
@NovemberSierra1 ska is not always ska-punk, 1st wave ska came before reggae, then 2-tone combined ska with rock, then in the 90s ska-punk arrived. then there was skacore, founded by the mighty mighty bosstones, and the rx bandits invented progressive ska, but then the bandits switched the ska part to reggae, and in their latest album play only progressive rock. reggae came after ska around the sixties, and is different in that its slower tempo and usually less brass, and has more percussion.
awesome vids! short but on the point, great to learn new rhythms, i hate figuring out rhythms so i dont do it, but you make it easy to learn new ones :) thanks alot!
So why don't u come online and do something helpful instead of insulting others who actually do? Thank you Clare for the helpful advice, you rock sistah!
I like the lesson, but how do you get that exact tone though, is it settings on the guitar or amp or something? whatever i do i cant get that sound, please help
It's like I'm goin' through Reggae/Ska 101. I can't wait to go home and try this stuff out! I'm like Brian52363, I've been playing for a while...I don't know if he shares this technique with me, but I've been essentially programmed to play down strokes before anything else. It's the upstroke I needed. Gah! Anyway, thanks so much for the video lessons--you've been a blessing! -=80)
i know i went to their concert on 4/20 it was amazing i'm trying to learn their stuff i'm good at playing other things but for some reason i'm finding trouble with the reggae like solo's
Do you have any ideas for practicing because i always get confused on the strumming. im trying to learn the song "beer" by reel big fish a nd im struggling with the beggining. i dont know if you can help with that but any advice would be good. thanks.
Hi, just keep strumming and playing and eventually you will get where you want to be. Try keeping it simple and strumming the first part so that it is in time, the timing is the most important part of the playing as long as it's in time then you've cracked it! If you keep strumming then you should develop your own sound and technique, peace Clare :-)

any1 knows if its harder to use ska wid a high action?
blossomsftwyo 2 years ago
It a little harder on the left hand stamina wise with high action due to the constant relax/tense/relax/tense distance/effort having to be greater..
I prefer med/low action for sure.

I think the second one sounds way better if you don't swing it. Then add some double time.
But also, I don't understand why you need to explain this to people. Like, can't they work out how to play it from the way it sounds?
