Amazing - a fair amount of Tal Farlow influence in his solo - but he's definitely got his own thing going. Rhythmically, this is nothing short of a marvel.
Bireli is like some extragalactic mutant with an 100 foot brain who was sent the discography of every guitarist from Django to Benson, and comes down to earth. I saw him live in NYC in the 90's (I think). It was like watching someone bench press 6000 lbs - but a whole lot more engrossing! Right up there with having seen Sonny Stitt live.
I remember playing this with a sax player right next to my ear! He almost deafened me, covered my guitar with spittle, and the stink that came out the sax was like real bog-breath! He could play though for sure. I wasn't as good as BL though... Would you believe that?
people rip on kenny G because they think it's cool - kenny g got his start by playing with black artists like Barry White and in funk and fusion bands. The fact that he went commercial and is the most popular instrumentalist in the world is just business.
5.20-5.24. Is it a known lick or just a lick Bireli invented and uses very often in his improvisations?

The soprano's tone is too much kenny g and not enough Wayne Shorter.
BodaciouslyHST 3 years ago 4
Agreed, hate that tone.
It's a good version nonetheless.
BassThrasher 3 years ago
Agree but Frank wolf shows much more musichianship, theory, and experience a.s.o than kenny g and dave koz :P
kingclarinet 3 years ago 6
I agree there; he's much more fun to listen to than G...

you lose all credibility when you put Kenny and G in the same sentence
