I knew NY was gonna make them quiet down the old flexi and the Buffalo GMC. Damn. They both had that straight exhaust tone. If the only would have had a straight pipe with the exhaust sealed instead of that off the turbo leak soiund, they could have gotten away with it.

Those were the real engines. Eventhough they were Detroits, but they were the Detroits built like an engine should. The Rohr Flxibles could have been made ADA compliant. Plenty of room to install a Lift-U wheelchair lift. Just by looking at these buses takes us back to the days well before the ADA wasn't even thought of!

There is nothing like the sound of a two-stroke Detroit Diesel in a bus. Be it an inline 6-71 or any of the 71 Series or 92 Series V's, these engines give these coaches their personality. In today's world, bus engines are either 4-stroke Detroits or Cummins. They vibrate like crazy at idle and on some, the constant cycling on and off of the engine brake is annoying. Two-strokes were just smooth!

At the 1983, the new look bus use the 6v71 or 6v92 engine with a tailight modification to the engine, so it's rare a 8v71 on this bus, I sure that bus is repowered with this engine.

@123jefm Nope, u are incorrect sir! CT Transit bought these units with the 8V71 engine in them. Also, New York Bus Service had their 1983 GMC Fishbowls with 8V71 engines as well
