The only issue I heard Dells having is hard drive failures. Seems they can't keep the hard drives going for long. But that's a small problem compared to this. It's been said that Apple is the new MS: bloated, unresponsive, and (apart from the OS) inclined to turn out faulty product without so much as a second thought. I agree my macbook 17 had its screen replace 3 times, and they also replaced it with a glossy, then finally the matte came in , cracked 2 years later - now apple is giving me a new 17 after 2 years with 3 hd failures, 3 screens, and in the end waited 8 months for a replacement screen. piece of crap - machines - ive never had issues with any of my Dells, also macbook. had the battery replaced 4 times. so far only my 30 inch cinema display has not failed out of all their product lines.

My 2yr old HP dv9500t (intel t770 @ 2.4ghz, 8600M GS, 17inch 1680x1050, bluray rom) can go upto 4.5hours of cashual web surfing. But when i watch video it only last 2.5hr and bluray video at 90min...and this is done with screen at its full brightness.
Anyone has this 17in mac? Please post your experience about the battery life. If it can play video for 8 hours, WOW
Hmm I really don't know about all that. Unless if you calibrate your battery but I don't even think that could give you eight hours. My 17 usually runs for about four and a half for just normal stuff like surfing the next, and jamming to tunes. but as for watching a movie, it might just barley push 2 and a half hours. Ohh and to calibrate your battery (which you should do once a month) is just let it run till it's powered out then sit for 15 min then charge to full and leave it plugedfor 30 min.
looks like them might be LED backlite screens , due to the led technology having problems with diffusing light at certain angles .. I have the same thing on my acer 8920G

The screen isnt glossy. A screen is glossy when you can use it as a mirror. Normal screens have just gotten more ''glossy-er'' with time i suppose.. But the backlight thingy is bad...

mac OS X is designed so that it is NEAR TO IMPOSSIBLE to create a virus. the coding is locked tight and cannot be changed. even if you do break the code... for people to download it, it would have to go through "installer" which cannot be bypassed.

yeah, I think Apple is lowering their standards. I've experienced 4 hard drive failures on 3 different MacBooks, one of them a MacBook Pro. Considering what a premium we're paying for these devices, these machines should have the most reliable hard drives money can buy, or at least be burned-in before you buy them.
Although QC probably has dropped, your problems are not Apple's fault. The MacBooks use Seagate Hard Drives which have been known to be failing a lot.

I had faults with 3 17" in a row also in fortunately each fault occurred in the first week. and the most recent machine is working fine. I strongly recommend the transparent case's sold very cheep by speck .
I agree, I think especially Apple laptops are made without careful consideration. I purchased my macbook pro for almost a year. I found out that there is a small spot on my screen. It seems like one of the pixels is screwed up. Also my battery is slightly bulged and its life is quickly drained when not plugged in. I love apple but I think they care more about money than their customer satisfactions.

By the way, display problems are not new to Apple. The iMac G4 flat panel LCD displays have continued to fail prematurely. Glossy is better only in dark rooms fore gaming in the dark or videos. Fore working in an office with lights or out side you cant see crap you get blinded buy glare.
if you want won fore light or dark get semi gloss.
i got the exact same problem,the display has an light-band at the bottom and gets darker in the top edges. maybe the new HD screens got better backlights, because the had to make them new ( perhaps they use old screens in the 1680x1050 because the got them since macbook pro start without chance and perhaps they dont make new backlights for the HD screens because the juste need new panels... what ever ) or it won't bring anything.
I am now on my 3rd 15" Macbook pro. First one the logic board went then a few months later the harddisk went. Then requested a brand new computer. That arrived about 2.5 weeks later however the DVD drive didnt work. Now waiting for the second replacement and 3rd computer to arrive. In total been without a computer for about 8 weeks since December. I think Apples quality is serverly slipping. Come on Apple Concentrate.
Writing on a 17" Apple PowerBook G4, a yellow, vertical line flickers on the display. It is line 27 establishing. Lines of magenta, green, blue etc. and a flickering zone 2" wide, half translucent, have previously occupied the display.
Dell are exchanging displays with these defects produced at the same time.
If Apple delivers products with a doubtful quality, and does not take their responsibility for defects, then Apple has ceased being an alternative.
the new LED backlit screens should fix that although thats no good for anyone who already has one...my macbook screen is slightly brighter in the bottom corners but its not too important to me I dont do photo editing and I have seen windows based laptops with illumination worse than mine
It might have only costed you $1300, but everything else is inferior when compared to MB pro...you only get 1GB Ram, 80GB Hard drive, 1.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo, etc...so you lose =)

Dude. Thats Just the Back Light man. Don't Use, colours that are very stereotype. Try using blue or maybe some other wallpaper. If it still happens, i guess, the lcd screen backlighting has gone too wrong and too bright.
All displays should be consistent no matter what colour or shade they're displaying. My MBP 17" Core 2 displays a full screen of grey just perfectly with no colouring or brightness variations. It's just that a light grey shows the effects more dramaticly than other colours or shades would. Apple should fix that computer.
if you have a look in the old generation of iPods, they don't have back lighting. The new generation has back lighting to increase the brightness of the screen and colour depth. In an iPod, for people that want longer play back, they can turn back lighting off, and it'll look like a normal lcd screen, but not as bright.
Recently, AUO upgraded its 15.4" 1440X900 panel as known as B154PW03 with 262k color, 90% color saturation and 8ms response time. It's very new so I don't think youu can find it on today's MBP15. You may wait a while. Besides, Samsung just released its new 15.4" 1440X900 panel with LED backlight. It could be the one used on the next generation of MBP15. Think about it and good luck.

Hi ateale, I wish you can get a refund. Before you buy another MBP15, I would like to tell you something. First, now there are three panels used on MBP15. They are:
Mantic6t9 have you got the 17 MBP? apparently there are 15" display models that are not faulty - acutally I have seen one in a shop here in Hong Kong.
Make sure you speak to Customer Relations. let them know you are not happy about your Apple experience. explain your downtime for multiple repairs and that the situation is a inconvience to your work. Tell them you either want a replacement or refund. If the rep isn't helpful ask for his/her supervisor. Also check your area for computer lemon laws.
So both the 15in and 17in modles have the same problem and apparently for the 17in ist's an unresolved problem. Anyone know if its been fixed on the 15in?

Well I am supposedly getting a refund which should arrive pretty soon. The screen was replaced for a 3rd time and was still exhibiting the same issues, so luckily a good person at Apple Customer Relations in Australia was able to help me out.

Apple are usually pretty good about in-warranty repairs anyways, like the PlaceboTree said below it's usually a matter of days ..

the 17'' model uses flourescent backlights whereas the 15'' use LED backlights.
They will always have more consistent performance across the screen.
Flourescent bulbs are notorius for clouding, the only way to overcome it is dimming the backlight, its the same on my top end 46'' tv.

Apple in general has a higher quality of product, service, support, repair quality, and repair time rankings than other manufacturers continually according to sources like PC Mag. You got one of those bad streaks that defy the stats. The screen, however, is one of the most common parts to go on Macs - kind of like th speakers on Dells, for example.

By the way, display problems are not new to Apple. The iMac G4 flat panel LCD displays have continued to fail prematurely. The Apple Studio Display class action lawsuit was settled. iBook owners have been complaining for awhile. Thanks to you and others for letting us know about the Macbook issue! i got the exact same problem,the display has an light-band at the bottom and gets darker in the top edges. maybe the new HD screens got better backlights, because the had to make them new ( perhaps they use old screens in the 1680x1050 because the got them since macbook pro start without chance and perhaps they dont make new backlights for the HD screens because the juste need new panels... what ever ) or it won't bring anything.

I am now on my 3rd 15" Macbook pro. First one the logic board went then a few months later the harddisk went. Then requested a brand new computer. That arrived about 2.5 weeks later however the DVD drive didnt work. Now waiting for the second replacement and 3rd computer to arrive. In total been without a computer for about 8 weeks since December. I think Apples quality is serverly slipping. Come on Apple Concentrate.

Writing on a 17" Apple PowerBook G4, a yellow, vertical line flickers on the display. It is line 27 establishing. Lines of magenta, green, blue etc. and a flickering zone 2" wide, half translucent, have previously occupied the display.
Dell are exchanging displays with these defects produced at the same time.
If Apple delivers products with a doubtful quality, and does not take their responsibility for defects, then Apple has ceased being an alternative.

My experience is that they will replace the screen. They did 3 times!
I was lucky enough to get a refund.
Apparently new MBPs coming out soon possibly with a different type of screen - hopefully they are much better.

INTEL MACS are fine. THe display problem HERE is not related tointel chip BUT related To dodgy quality control in NEW DUAL CORE MACBOOKPROS... see post at apple discussions forums. BTW THIS MBPDC17 WAS TOTALLY REFUNDED BY APPLE ASIA including the APPLE CARE (Thanks APPLE).

Dude. Thats Just the Back Light man. Don't Use, colours that are very stereotype. Try using blue or maybe some other wallpaper. If it still happens, i guess, the lcd screen backlighting has gone too wrong and too bright.

All displays should be consistent no matter what colour or shade they're displaying. My MBP 17" Core 2 displays a full screen of grey just perfectly with no colouring or brightness variations. It's just that a light grey shows the effects more dramaticly than other colours or shades would. Apple should fix that computer.

if you have a look in the old generation of iPods, they don't have back lighting. The new generation has back lighting to increase the brightness of the screen and colour depth. In an iPod, for people that want longer play back, they can turn back lighting off, and it'll look like a normal lcd screen, but not as bright.

Recently, AUO upgraded its 15.4" 1440X900 panel as known as B154PW03 with 262k color, 90% color saturation and 8ms response time. It's very new so I don't think youu can find it on today's MBP15. You may wait a while. Besides, Samsung just released its new 15.4" 1440X900 panel with LED backlight. It could be the one used on the next generation of MBP15. Think about it and good luck.

Make sure you speak to Customer Relations. let them know you are not happy about your Apple experience. explain your downtime for multiple repairs and that the situation is a inconvience to your work. Tell them you either want a replacement or refund. If the rep isn't helpful ask for his/her supervisor. Also check your area for computer lemon laws.

Hi ateale,
For the MBP15, try to ask a LCD with model number 00009C56. It's a Samsung LCD and the best one you can find on MBP15. Yours looks like 00009C57.
For the MBP17, yours looks like 00009C62. Sorry, there is no way out. All MBP17 are affected.
How to check LCD model? Go to SysPrefs>Displays>Color, choose the default Color LCD profile and open it. Check the item #13 "mmod".

Well I am supposedly getting a refund which should arrive pretty soon. The screen was replaced for a 3rd time and was still exhibiting the same issues, so luckily a good person at Apple Customer Relations in Australia was able to help me out.
I will post again once I have the money in my bank account! :)
