I believe Spike see's a serious problem in how Perry portrays African-Americans and he wants to talk about it now rather than let it go without being discussed. He is being responsible. Perry got called out and that's why he responded disrespectfully, showing his true character. Spike is not alone in his views. I myself felt the same exact way about Perry's productions & I'm not even black.

I use to have issues with some of his movies because of some of the stereotypes that were used in his movie. But some of them does relate to people. He doesn't represent every Black person just a few relate to the characters. It is what it is. I will admit I did NOT like the hood rat girl from his last movie, but I see those types everyday where I live. Madea can be very insightful and wise at times. Tyler is a brilliant man and is truly gifted.
I like Tyler Perry and the fact that he has been able to succeed in life through his movies. People, give him credit. He's doing big things! Spike Lee has earned the right to be critical of film and TV. He's been critical of Tarantino in the past and no one's come rushing to QT's defense. Tyler Perry isn't beyond reproach just because of the color of his skin. He's a film maker, and not a very good one. His plays were excellent and inspiring; his films and television shows are buffonish and uncomfortable to watch. His "characters" are eye-rolling, hip-bumping stereotypes. He's... not... good... at this particular medium.

They each have their different styles. Do the Right Thing is my favorite movie ever but I think Spike has a problem. He always criticizes other directors that are more popular than him whether it was Tyler Perry, Quentin Tarantino or Clint Eastwood.

the fundamental flaw in his argument, and this has nothing to do with race, is that Hughes and Hurston were both artists. spike lee may have cooled off over the years, but he's responsible for one of the only true American masterpieces of the last 25 years. tyler perry is NOT a film artist -- he's a brand name.

I use to have issues with some of his movies because of some of the stereotypes that were used in his movie. But some of them does relate to people. He doesn't represent every Black person just a few relate to the characters. It is what it is. I will admit I did NOT like the hood rat girl from his last movie, but I see those types everyday where I live. Madea can be very insightful and wise at times. Tyler is a brilliant man and is truly gifted.

Spike Lee has earned the right to be critical of film and TV. He's been critical of Tarantino in the past and no one's come rushing to QT's defense. Tyler Perry isn't beyond reproach just because of the color of his skin. He's a film maker, and not a very good one. i applaud him fo a good job but at the same time there are more to blacks than just a cheap laugh... i wanna see him do more and bring out the historical aspects of us... we must take a step back before going forward.. half or most of these kids dont have any history to them.. this is the reason we in the condition we are in.! with his pull in the filming industry i would wanna see him do more with his films

This guy doesn't speak for me. I'm from the South. My family is from the south, and we've never behaved as his characters do in his ridiculous plays/films. I do not appreciate him claiming to be the offical voice of the African American Southern experience.

@evansjd2 He may not have voiced it officially, however I think he runs the risk of having society at large take his portrayl as the truth or some diluted version of the truth. I do not wish to be a part of that. Some of us take the state of our race a tad bit more seriously than others.

@98SLABRIDER You are totally right about that. I think black people (where I come from are doing just fine including myself). Everyone always looks to movies to portray us with no faults. I enjoy both Tyler Perry and Spike Lee's productions. I also like other movies such as Lottery Ticket, Friday, and Booty Call. While they do not portray black people in the best light, they do give me something funny to laugh about. Now Soul Plane and The Cookout, that's another story.

The actors have a problem, it's usually money, disease, or love,then he brings in madea to bring in laughter, which is what I like the most, then madea helps someone with their problem by giving a "quote from the bible." Finally, she saves the day, everyone sings a song with their beautiful voices and the movie is done.

I for one do not represent the psyche of the masses....and my walk in life and position in it is testimony to that.
