  • Best I've heard in long time,,that's good mood stuff,,,,brought back Judy memories. Nanci G.has voice. Like to pass that song to my sister.

  • There is NOTHING like singing together with friends on a beautiful song.

  • Sandy Denny was the greatest folk-rock singer of her generation and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" is her masterpiece. No other artist can make me forget Sandy. That said, this is a very fine version that does complete justice to the original. Just take it for what it is and enjoy it.

  • Enjoy listening to Nanci a lot and have several of her albums but this song jis just not one of my favourite of hers. The only cover of this timeless & beautiful song written by Sandy that I have ever really liked is by singer, Judy Collins. I have heard many covers over the years including Mary Black & Eva Cassidy (who have very nice versions), But somehow even these singers with great voices just don't compare to Sandy's singing of it and my own personal favourite cover - Judy Collins.

  • @folkmusicgirl Yes, Judy's version is the most familiar and she has always known how to get the most from a song. Her voice is strong and pure and a mellow alto. Sandy's versions are rare to most and the sadness of her short career and life only make her recordings more poignant and powerful. Thanx for remembering Sandy and Fairport!

  • @folkmusicgirl Same here.....First heard this song by Judy Collins, and her version is my preferred one. Then I like Eva's. Maybe if I had first heard Sandy singing it, then she would be my preferred. A few years back, there was a studio version of Judy Collins singing it, but it had to be removed.

  • Always loved this song since Sandy's first version. Though I love Nanci for 25 years, I agree her version is thinner then Sandy's. The only other version which is really commendable is the Eva Cassidy version. Her version of Over the Rainbow also one of the best. (The Transatlantic Series is the best.)

  • Beautiful never tire of this.

Hay Who knows where the time goes!

  • Pushing 60 now. Who knows?

  • I like Nanci's voice, but there's not a cover of this that even comes close to Sandy's... And then the version with Fairport is preferable before the one with the Strawbs... that's kind of the last rehersal bfore the final recording...

  • Who knows where? It's here, now, and beautiful. Thanks to this fine recording.

  • No one will surpass Sandy's version but Ms Griffith holds it very well.... Then kills it stone dead with those sha-la-las

  • Excellent musicians Love the Transatlantic sessions

  • Brilliant Transatlantic Session

    Beautiful Nanci Griffith

    Who does Know

  • No, I'm sorry, bless her heart, this is mannered and thin compared to Sandy's (original) recording.

  • I've spent so much time watching the Transatlantic Sessions that I haven't seen anything else for a while. This (who knows where the time goes) is my particular favourite, but the whole series is brilliant.

  • That was very good, but I do think that Sandy Denny sang it a lot better-she was amazing.

  • Pretty good..... But no one sings it quite like Sandy.

  • I saw Nanci at Anderson Fair in the early 80's and at Wolf Trap in the late 80's. This song makes me cry. Thank you Nanci.

  • At the very beginning of this video....is that a cigarette in Nanci's hand????

  • No, it's a tissue.

  • This is one of the nicest versions that I have heard. Sandy Denny was so influential...There is a recent bbc documentary about sandy that so far has not been broadcsa

  • The song was not written by Richard Thompson, it was written by the late and lamented Sandy Denny.

  • what a great composition that no one but an amateur could destroy. I like Eva Cassidy but this and so many more are so touching---so--all hands clap for Sandy Denny and her great talent in composition---and performance

  • This song was written by the great Richard Thompson.

  • @jimboofharrock It waas written by Sandy Denny. she performed it with the Strawbs before she joined Fairport

  • My god, this is *perfection*.

  • I just say: Eva Cassidy!

In my opinion her version is the best! : )

but nevertheless nanci griffith is not bad.

The best song nanci griffith sang: From a distance! Just beautiful @->--

  • nice.but the difinitve version is still by its writer Sandy Denny, who remains the greatest vocalist of all time.

  • Agreed, Kate Rusby is todays class English act.

  • This song breaks me down everytime...Love you Nanci!

  • brillaint. Loved Barbara dicksons version too, thought it;s not on you tube

  • Always thought Judy Collins' clarion soprano carried this song to its highest peak, & still do, but this is an excellent counter-point.

  • Nanci and Maura! Enough said.

  • Nanci's vocals sound a little like Iris Dement-Which isnt a bad thing :-)!!

    Beautiful song!!!!

  • just lovely.

  • I agree with hjortshog, I see it as a tribute to sandy and Fairport, who continue .

  • "Rogthedodger"! Please fuckoff and change your

alias to Hankthewank! Give everyone a thrill

    wont ya!"

  • "Sandys version is still the best but people shouldn't have to COPY the original version note for note. To think that a cover should be exactly the same is stupid! When Joe Cocker

covered the Beatles - 'A little help from my

friends' at Woodstock, it didn't sound anything like the Beatles original! However, it was a great version which Paul McCartney applauded! And Jimmy Hendrix covering Dylans 'All along the watchtower' was the same'. Nancy's doing a great service in honoring Sandys memory"

  • Eva Cassidy also does a passable version.

  • Very nice - having seen Sandy Denny sing this with the Convention - that set the measure - this is very close.

    Much appreciated.

  • Put down that ciggy, Nanci! :-)

  • heh, I noticed that. shocking.

  • a nice rendition, multiple egos notwithstanding, soft and caring approach, would have liked a littlle more sostenuto from ms. griffith, but that's her call. i hope this song never goes out of favor with people who want to make beautiful covers of a beautiful song .

  • Sorrow that runs deep in her voice..

no knowing where the time goes

yet runs the time like the river

    that runs somewhere downward

Till it is merged and buried

under the enormity of the raging sea

like our time, named life, runs

    Till it turns into vapor

    Reverberating is still her voice

    Running deep in my soul....

  • You can't top the late, great Sandy Denny. It is impossible. Like trying to outscore Michael Jordan in his prime. But what Nanci does is to honor other great songs, bring her own thing to it, show some reverence, expose other people to the material. She's an artist, and a fantastic songwriter in her own right.

  • Agree. Nobody could ever replace Sandy Denny. Mary Black has also done a nice version of this song, though. However, it is great to watch these fabolous artists get together and sharing great music.

  • VERY nice and intimate. Any other videos from the Transatlantic Sessions?

  • This song was first made well known in US by Judy Collins, first heard it in the late 1960's during the Vietnam era..

  • The great Nina Simone sang this long ago...her version is probably the most moving thing I've ever heard...but still Nanci's version is very sweet indeed.

  • I'd love to hear Nina simone sing this song. I am sure it will be great, but doubt that anyone can do it better than the original version by Sandy Denny. The wonderful Mary Black does a pretty nice version too, though.

  • Brill, but check out Eva Cassidy's version. For emotion she win hands down.

  • Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson do the definitive version of this beautiful song.

This version is a close second ...Nanci is magnificent

  • this is so beautiful, and is one of my favourites from the album. This is definitely better. Thanks for putting the video up. Temp

  • Curlygirl you don't know what you're talking about. There is nothing but Nanci's voice....Splendid song, and rendition...

  • Beautiful song but not sure about the "shal la la" at the end.

  • mnemonyxx I LOVE your vids man every one of them is good ! :).

  • This version is so much better than the one from the CD - besides the fact that the whole thing sounds like a generic folk album instead of a Nanci CD, Nanci's singing is one of my least favorite things about Other Voices, Too. In this video, it sounds like she's adapted to the changes in her voice instead of employing the same singing style she did circa 1987.

  • Thank you for that beautiful one ( again : ) !!!

Sounds like a sweet lullaby to me.
