God, please save the soul of Sylvester Stewart. He inspired us during the '60s, was a musician who honed his craft and contributed to the musical legacy of his generation. He's fallen on hard times, suffering from a result of bad choices, but he's that doesn't negate his work. We love you, Sly!
Whenever I read negative comments about Sly,I get enraged because here is a musical talented genious that gave us a movement of funk music. He is indeed a legend.and the mold was broke after Sly... If you have a heart, feel bad for him that he succumbed to drugs and lives in a van(If he really does). He's human!! There is not a one of us that is perfect and we all have done dumb things.in our lifetime. Despite the fact, I just love his music and what he did for the music world -- Love you Sly!!
Lol, he's not homeless, he's living in his van because HE WANTS TO. God forbid a funk legend wants to travel and live in his vehicle then an overrated something million dollar mansion.
@googleegahhs no one is hating on this incredible artist its just a fact that hes currently living in a van in los angelos because he spent all his money on drugs and loose women..but mostly drugs
Just go on the biography channel, set it all straight and basque in the new found limelight that with inevitably come next. I'll come and belly dance to your music for you and pour you some celebration bubbly..=)
Larry Graham, Jr. (born August 14, 1946, in Beaumont, Texas) is best known as both the bass guitar player in the popular and influential psychedelic soul/funk band Sly & the Family Stone, and as the founder and frontman of Graham Central Station. He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique, which radically expanded the tonal palette of the bass, although he himself refers to the technique as "Thumpin' and Pluckin'.
Sly Stone -- once one of the biggest names in soul music -- now lives in a white van he routinely parks in the rough Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles. Sly Stone
so its something to be ashamed of ? I was homeless for 18 months .Yes I kept it a secret for a few years but I am not ashamed anymore.I did not have a van , I slept under bridges and parking lots. His van is his house and he is clean.
Sly was soooo creative and way ahead of his time musically! I'm sure that society did get the best of him. I mean just look at the cover of his Greatest Hits album. Sure he looks good and is in a classic convertible car but can someone tell me WHY the drummers picture is higher than Sly AND why are there MORE images of the drummer (almost looking Jesus like) than anyone else in the band?
I saw Sly and the Family stone concert at the Long Beach auditorium in 1969 - Its still fresh in my mind how he lit up the audience. Was an amazing experience and tons of natural talent.
He had more than just drugs to deal with. Society in the late 60s was really f-ed up, especially for young black people. I've read that he had certain groups actually pressuring him to change the racial makeup of his band. Probably any number of things contributed to his apparent strange changes. But unlike quite a few of his peers in the industry, he didn't end up stupidly drugging himself to death. Something in him must have wanted to survive, and he did.
Sly isn't the only musician or person that had a ruff time because of drug's, I know because I had a bad drug problem myself. I don't know if that make's any of us bad people. The one thing I can say is this guy and his group changed the sound of the kind of music I grew up on. And for that I am thankful. I pray for everybody that has a drug problem and wish them well. GOD BLESS EVERYBODY
Ima Funk head and Georgia Anne Muldrow is this generations Sly in creative soulful energy. Shes the bridge. She even looks like she could pass as a niece.

I think a lot of people just dont understand why such a pioneering artist who was clearly a genius, made music that everybody liked, went into suclussion. Rumors say he was a snob, and drugs took over his life style. If that were the case, what a pity. Sly Stone could have been richer beyond any stretch of the imagination if he would have stayed the coarse. And just maybe...he thought he could never top his early success.
There's plenty of bass in this tune. It's just not what you're used to hearing on the original track. In fact Sly makes a comment on how much liked the bass in the subsequent interview with Mike Douglas.
There's plenty of bass in the tune. Sly comments on the bass player in the interview after he gets done with the song. Sounds nothing like the original; still sounds pretty phat though. Check it.
Definetely inspired by Ray Charles. Forget the drugs, most of 'em artists go through that. Just listen to the funky sounds he left us during his golden years!
Why in the hell does everyone think that Sly Stone is in shambels because of his drug addiction? This man is still performing live and he has outlived most rock artists of his time. Fuck the haters!
@googleegahhh as big a fan as i am, you can't be serious. he's a trainwreck who damages his own legacy every time he gets on stage these days. if you call the state he's in 'living', then i wouldn't want to be alive! he's a total mess.
@googleegahhh Last year I saw him on some talk show discussing a new album. But you are so right. I think that people enjoy the sensationalism and negativity that the press loves to keep going.
@googleegahhh You'll find most creative people are on drugs at some point in their life. It takes a touch of misery to create things that touch other people, and drugs help you suppress your own misery and analyze it to create something people can relate to. Its not right, and it leads to problems in your life and others, but I suppose its the human condition. A good example of someone who came out of addiction and is still creative is Trent Reznor.
enough with the drug comments... How many number 1 hits did you guys have? whos to say his talent or anything was wasted due to drug use.. who cares injoy the music non of you are God so quit passing judgement.. dang..
Sly Stone - what can I say? Blessed with an awesome musical talent - but his addiction to drugs proved his ruin, but the great legacy of his supreme music lives on!!!

I think it was a lot of cocaine, marijuana, etc., the man loved to drink as well, and did spend a good deal of time in prison on I believe drug and or weapons charges.

1. Absolutely Sick Artist - Sick = Over the top untouchable
2. How dare they run credits over his performance.
Now a days if that were Britney or Lindsay coming out of rehab

what they thought and air it over and over again.
A sad time we live in for music. We are grossly mal-nutritioned.
