This beats the original ending hands down. The original ending to of the film was to abruct and made you think there wasnt going to be a sequel but with this ending its much better and longer and could easily implicate that a sequel could be made. they should of used this ending and made a second film. No, in this case Legend = monster. The zombies were sentient, they had emotions. Smith was a dark legend to them, a boogeyman who abducted their families and murdered them without remorse. THat's the real meaning behind the title, that he was the real monster.

this ending is better, it is how the book ended, which is where the title 'i am legend' comes from, that at the end, it turns out being that the vampires was the good guys all along and that he was the monster, so basically they just totally lost the plot of the story in the movie.

Not only does the book end in a similar way, but it in fact was the entire freaking point of the book. That's where the title "I Am Legend" came from, Neville's realization at the end that the vampires were the good guys and that he was the monster of their legends, since he had been mindlessly driving stakes through their heart at every opportunity. A dangerous situation where often the man who have lost his family saves the life of others by killing himself sort of. The reason it is called "I Am Legend" is because he is the legendary monster to the mutants. He's the guy that hunts them down and takes and/or kills them whenever he can. Then the head mutant finds the monster's hidden layer and saves the princess. Should have been the original ending. BOOSH

This is more to a part of the book where Neville is told he's viewed as the monster... The thing with this movie is that there are two sides of the story and both have the same point: we fear that which we don't understand or know. Neville thought they were infected and needed to be cured, the vampires thought he was a monster and needed to die. It's a very very complex subject, and I'm glad they made this alternate ending so we could know both sides of the story.
