I've spent a large portion of my life trying to examine the Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, and other scripture. Non-interventionist foreign policy and holding concerns for people's civil liberties means believing in strong national defense, which is necessary to protect America. The two are not mutually exclusive. The difference between non-interventionists like Ron Paul and interventionists like Levin is large. Non interventionists would wait until war was just and the US was threatened (see WWII post Pearl Harbor) instead of fighting for abstract ideas while no threat to the US exists (i.e. Iraq).

I've spent a large portion of my life trying to examine the Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, and other scripture. The Bible has over 400 contradictions and is based loosely on Egyptian, Persian, Babylonian/Sumerian knowledge. In fact it can be argued by me the whole book is just a copy of other previous myths found in pagan religions. I think whether Iraq and Afghanistan were the right or wrong choose is irrelevant at this point. What matters is that we are their now. We need to decide what final defined goal we want to accomplish and then come home. Without a defined goal, war can continue forever. We need to stop second guessing ourselves, let our military do their job so that they can come home.

Look, the GOP tax cuts were not accompanied by corresponding spending cuts. The did not create enough new growth to pay for themselves. So the deficits that resulted were financed largely by the Chinese government. The large deficits and monetary policies that supported them had the effect of making US production even more expensive and less competitive, hastening the outsourcing of jobs. Which is why Obama is struggling with the legacy of GOP tax cuts---15 to 16% unemployment.

But that is not the case that Levin makes in his book, he explains why soft tyranny is almost always not detected until much later and cited many instances in Europe that validated his arguments. Smaller government in Levin's book is basically a government with limited inference in the public sector, which is a constitutional argument. Levin doesn't support the "empire" argument you raised here because as far as conservatives concern, it was the Dems that established this empire after WWII.

Alright, since that -was- a little callous let me rephrase it.
The point of the argument is that the money we spend militarily isn't even for our OWN national defense. It is more for the defense of South Korea, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia (why are we defending these assholes anyway?). So no. Spending money to keep our military a gargantuan bruiser isn't his goat. It is using our gargantuan bruiser to get involved in other people's wars that is, due to money and blood lost.

How many diplomats, councils, and bureaucrats are needed to supplement the foreign policy Levin embodies? Does it not bring about stronger federalized government (if not international government)? How can he claim to be for small government?

Over the past 30 years we have seen government expansion and public debt increase to per capita levels not seen since the great depression (not consrvatism-political jargon does not apply for both parties). Marxists are now saying follow us and everyone will be more equal but we will control your life and tax anything that does not make us equal. But would you rather be free with a chance to get ahead with hard work and adapt to whatever cards mother nature deals?

We have not been conservative for a long time. When you go to the beach you see mini-waves come and go but the tide is impossible to see. Politicians ride (or don't get elected) the tide and use the not quite bright medea paid by big business to report ideological battles based on the day to day mini-waves influencing public opinion of which most are drones but not all.

National defense is one of the view mandates of the Federal Government. Providing health care and food stamps is not. Your figures for the cost of our military and the iraq war are of course biased and disputable. Your figures most likely include replacement of any military equipment used in Iraq which is very questionable.

There's nothing wrong with a national defense, what TSA is tackling is this concept of an interventionist foreign policy, this idea that we have to be the world's policeman, and the un-American practice of preemptive war. The founding fathers warned us against getting into unnecessary entanglements overseas, such as the Iraq War, which btw was unconstitutional, war has to be declared by Congress.

You know. I recall Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter saying something along the lines of "Ron Paul is right on everything but the war.". Glenn Beck thinks much the same thing. I disagree, but can respect that. Even Sean 'Sellout' Hannity occasionally gives paleo-conservatism and libertarianism a bone where they rarely agree with the Republican establishment.
To be fair to Levin, people were crank calling him and just saying "Ron Paul" before hanging up....

Non-interventionist foreign policy and holding concerns for people's civil liberties means believing in strong national defense, which is necessary to protect America. The two are not mutually exclusive. The difference between non-interventionists like Ron Paul and interventionists like Levin is large. Non interventionists would wait until war was just and the US was threatened (see WWII post Pearl Harbor) instead of fighting for abstract ideas while no threat to the US exists (i.e. Iraq).
