It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since when I used to watch the IMSA Camel GT races as a young teenager. Looking at them even now, they don't look very outdated.
IMSA Camel GT series started off being comprised of private teams that were owned by very wealthy men that just went out & bought something like a Porsche 962 & went racing. Too bad factories like Nissan & Toyota came in and ruined it with too much spending. IMSA Prototypes may have continued racing for many more years.
i went to many of these races including all miami grand prix from 1987-till the last grand prix of americas. also been to all sebrings from 1990 till now and road atlantas these were great cars i loves the porsches but nissan where definately more advanced and had more power/ hopefully alms keeps on getting better
I believe that the two on board shots (one from the back of the wing and the front looking back) are from the episode of Miami Vice where they featured the Miami Grand Prix. I think there were also a couple other shots from that episode in this piece. I don't think there was anything after 1989 in this piece.
I remember the IMSA Camel GT days very fondly back in the day when the Nissan's were always battling Dan Gurney's Toyota Eagles and the Jaguars as well as the usual Porsche or Mazda.
Indeed it was, thanks to the developments of technologies these racing teams used we now drive fuel injected cars, ABS brakes, traction control, vehicle stabilty control or active suspension. I would also like to add that the electromotive nissan(now called nismo)300zx GTP car was cut back from 1000HP to make the car more managable on most of these tracks, I'm not sure but I believe they where running about 700 or 750HP. I miss IMSA very much but I have Grand Am to fill the void.
I don't doubt your engine figures, but Electramotive Nissan DID NOT become Nismo. Elecrtamotive transformed into Nissan Performance Technology Incorperated(NPTI)and shut down in 1993. Nismo had already existed since 1970 and is still going strong! On another note, i also miss IMSA GTP competition very much.
the wreck at 3.35 i was sitting right in front of at Riverside when Doc Bundy smacked Lynn StJames into the pit wall. it took out her Probe/Mustang GTP and a Jag as well. My daughter and i had talked to StJames about an hour prior
thats awesome, does anyone have old footage of the miami street races, I saw Grand Prix Americas a few years ago, it's too bad we won't see another maimi streetrace again
Amazing!!! I LOVE this kind of racing forget Nascar and ChampCar, this is thee best kind of racing bar none! I am glad of the safety improvements but regret that I only saw 2 IMSA races (sniff!!).
The 962 was the greatest turnkey racecar a person could ever purchase....all the others were one offs, Porsche competed against thier own sustomers which made up half the field and was second only to Can Am as the greatest racing era ever. Great stuff! Thanks!
I wonder what happened to the framerate on this video? I remember that it was as smooth as silk compared to how jerky it is now...
It's damn shame, because otherwise it's an excellent tribute to the last "Golden Age" in American Sportscar Racing.

I love it! It reminds me of Days of Thunder, except with GTP cars(Now THAT would've been an awseome movie)!

I would love to have seen the IMSA Nissan's go up against the CroupC Sauber Mercedes C9/C11's. Wonder who would win?

The car-mounted camera shot looking back to the cockpit with the roaring V-8, is that a Chevy Spice?
