Surcouf took command of Confiance, a fast 22-gun ship
he led a brilliant campaign which resulted in the capture of nine British ships. October 1800, the Confiance met the 40-gun Kent, an 820-ton, with,, 437 men. The French managed to seize control of the Kent. He became a living legend in France and, in England, a public enemy whose capture was valued at 5 million francs, although he was noted his humane treatment of prisoners.
As a child I liked this movie. But it's only a movie. Surcouf made his first prizes without a letter of marque, a pirate. The local French (!) seized them but some money spent in France got him a retrospective letter. Money makes the world go round . He was brave, lucky but he never attacked a military target for Frances strategic reasons. He was out for merchant prizes. The often repeated bon mot, told about the British officer's words and Surcouf's answer is nice, but nothing more.
@crematio Propaganda. You are right in the beginning but your interpretation is obviously biased. He was a pirat indeed, working for money too but he always professed that when asked he would work for the king. Both are not mutually exclusive.

I saw the Surcouf movies as a kid and I loved it so much!
Is there anybody in our community who would sell me the two movies about Surcouf - originals or copies, DVDs or VHS tapes?
I would pay nearly every price he would suggest.
If so please leave me a message.
