MILSOM. If I ever meet you, I AM going immediatly demand you tell me why you unlisted this video. Actually I'll probably marvel at the fact that your face is three dimensional, tell you that your music is awesome, and THEN you're in for some serious questioning D:<
I understand why you unlisted it... but hearing your music and seeing this quite often has helped me alot :') Thanks sooo much Tom hope to see you sitc...
The thing is that I always think of is that technology has evolved so fast that we don't need to talk to eachother anymore. No one shares ideas or points of view, all the technology we have is to merely distract us and make our day to day lives go faster. which is sad to me.
So I love when you find a friend or person who is willing to share their view on things, strange or not, and I think it makes you feel a little more human and connected.
I don't know if you're still reading these. Probably not. But, on the off chance, have you checked out the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn? A friend of mine told me to read it, and... well... There are bits of it I don't fully agree with, bits that make me angry, and others that just exasperate me. But it's worth a read. And it's definitely relevant to this. So, if you ever look at old comments on old videos and see mine... Give it a try?
Very interesting and powerful, when I watch this (amazing) video it makes me realise how precious the life we DO have is and think that maybe we shouldn't waste it trying to improve or lengthen it but just enjoy it for what it is.
This made me think of a lot of stuff that I've never thought of before. I knew that we were trying to disconnect ourselves from animals, but I never realized the extremes it could go to. In the end it all comes down to our egos, because everyone just has to feel like they're the most special creature that's ever existed and ever will simply because that's the perspective they're looking from. We're just a phase. The world won't end when we do (granted we don't cause it to end).
You say "Christianity" as if it's a bad thing, as if it's some sort of slimy, disgusting wretched thing that you've pulled from the deepest crevasses of your imagination. Why is that? I understand that you're an atheist, I'm not going to argue with you about that (as no *real* Christian should) but I can't help but wonder why you think that, Tom.
I agree with some of your points but I do believe that the human race was created by GOD to be above other animals. That is the exact same reason why he let man name the animals, the reason why he created man in his own image and the precise reason that GOD has saved us with the death if his son and not your neighbors dog.
@ceylaxp I would have to agree with most of what you said. Except in quite a few cases, animals take life partners as well. I'm not saying the majority, but it does happen. Take dolphins for instance.
It's so rare to find someone who agrees with me on the point that humans are animals, and that we have tried to separate ourselves so much from them with businesses and machines and the creativity that so many people think is unique to the human race. I also think, though, that humans have genuinely succeeded in separating ourselves from animals, because we will never be the same as we were before our 'solutions', and we will never be as primitive as we were just a few million years ago.
I'm just not really understanding the point you're trying to make about sex and love...that they're the same thing? Or that we've used love to separate ourselves from animals... What connects us to family. then? Or do you think that's a learned behavior...? I do think that the idea of love has been exploited and completely taken advantage and that love and "raw animal lust" can be two separate things....I hope I'm making sense. Not trying to start anything...just curious :)
@Socksmakemewarm I think he was mostly referring to the romantic concept of love. It's standard for mammals to care intensely for their young, but what about this ideal of two people perfect for each other being together forever never fornicating outside the relationship or leaving the each other's sides? In the context of animalism it seems weird and constrained.
if what we think of as animals now will someday become like us, was there some species that was there when we were still animals? it seems pretty unlikely that humans would be the first to evolve this far.
This is so amazingly thoughtful! It's changed my opinion on life in general. You need to make more video's about this because I think people need to see more stuff like this.
Also, I love how this video shows your transition from blonde hair to entirely blue hair!!! It's awesome!!!!
whoa, mind-boggling stuff there. that is really interesting, maybe you sould change your career path and become a scientist, or a world leader. world leader would be good.
so, one day dogs will walk or talk or wear clothes... not just dogs, every single animal in the world can develop the inteligence to do whatever we are doing now.. shame i wont be around when that happens.. i dont really know if its a good thing or aa bad thing, if only we dont use them as slaves or abuse of them in any way..
Honestly your ideas are a lot more than I am used to pondering about in deep thought. I do believe that like you mentioned beforehand, we all have some sorts of animalistic traits that we disguise in non-animalistic ways in hopes of trying to make ourselves conciously indifferent from the animals all around us, but yet, as we try to do that we start to come to this level of self-consciousness that we aren't capable of containing and we slowly self-destruct ourselves by trying to contain it.
Us prolonging life is also one of the leading causes of over-population. In the past, Grandparents didn't usually live to see their grandchildren. Now, people are living long enough to become great-grandparents. More and more people are being born; and not enough are dying.
Couldn't love, rather then a convoluted sociological pretense, actually be a natural occurrence that only seems unnatural to us because it originates from a source beyond our understanding. I know that this line of reasoning seem like a stretch. However if you believe that there are different types of love not all of them make evolutionary sense. It appeals to me as a far more elegant solution to the problem of love. I enjoyed this, I hope it's clear thatmy comment is respectfully meant. Thanks.
... continued. we are basing our reproductive partners on other things like personality and attractiveness. of course, we are usually more attracted to people who are more healthy such as liking toned abs, large breasts, and neat hair. but i suppose that basing mates on personality is something that matters now, because it is something that is important to success in life and being chosen as someones partner :)
i personally think that sex is something that should be done only in love, but that is not what i really have to say.
because we marry for love, we are preventing evolution... evolution is when species are over time involuntarily bred to be better and more efficient and more functional. the weaker die and the stronger live and reproduce. but, in sex (and therefore reproduction) for love we are not basing our partner selection on efficiency and functionality...
I agree on the point that it is only a hiluman thing and it makes us crazy. But for some it is not about controlling life, it is the only way they can see release from the chaotic world of pain and suffering we live in today.
"alzheimers and dementia are not becoming bigger issues.."
he's basically saying that by advances in medicine and science, we are finding out how to make people better, and live longer.
keeping people alive for longer, and longer, its just giving them dementia, because there brain literally cannot handle being alive, because its past some kind of used by date.
tom, you are probaby the most indie person ever... i mean like honelstly i am only 13 and i dont know what it is but all i do is think... every day after school i sit onthe bus just thinking... everyone poles me thinking i am asleep when i am the moat alive i have ever been... im going to make a vlog about this...
Loved it, Tom. I've worked in a dementia specific ward for about 3 years, and I have had those exact thoughts for the entire time I've worked there... You are utterly perfect....
I am far too sleepy to post any kind of detailed response, but this was wonderful and it's hard to disagree with anything he said. I can't believe I only just saw this, a year after it was posted. Shame shame shame. I'll probably watch this a few more times until I fall asleep. Woooooooooo
The very first video I've ever watched on Youtube wherein my mouse has not moved for it's entirety.
I love the raw thought being exposed here, even if I disagree with portions of your assumptions based upon evolution and atheism (or at least a-christianity).
Miss GreenOrangeFringe say: WAIT just there Mr BlondBlueFringe!
Kolalas (the females) are making a choice taking their own life, or getting raped by the koala male.. And meny animals get depressed and do kill themselves.
And it's true that our science is keeping us alive longer, but that doesn't always have to be something horrible. Science makes us live longer,an example: no longer does 50% of women giving birth well.. die.And we don't get killed by colds anymore. And love is life. thnx.
this is some ones opinion, if you think this is so deep please go think for yourself , theres a lot of truth here but it is one sided as all good opinions are
i mean yeah...this makes sense and it is one of the most intersting videos on youtube...however i will not try to deny that part of me only favourited it because he said "and those funny little hats with bobbles on"
Jeez, Tom. Recently, I can't stop watching this video. I find myself agreeing with everything you said. I'd write a load of feedback but it would be just a bunch of sentences rambling on about how I agree with everything and how I wish I had a friend to share my opinions and thoughts like these with.
Very interesting video & agree with most of your points. I'm not sure you are saying you don't believe in love (many people in the comments do seem to think you were saying that).
I do believe in love (I think - it's hard to explain, as I'm not sure myself what I think about it, but yeah. I'm 16 and I don't think I've ever been *in* love.). I don't think love has to have something to do with sex, etc. There's also love for art, nature, friends, the world.
I've been thinking about some of the same things. What strikes me is how much like monkeys humans look, and given that, how absurd the first world seems. My monkey math teacher makes me solve for x, again and again. Choirs formalize and sterilize what is ultimately visceral and raw in nature; music. Monkey students eat food in cafeterias off of ugly trays with forks. It's ridiculous, it's laughable.

i especially liked the ending bit. i suppose it's like how were screwing up the earth, but on a larger scale. the fact that were biting off more than we can chew. the world was supposed to stay simple, but were messing it up simply because were convinced that the way we perceive things now is the effect of our society being oh so advanced, when in a sense, its quite the opposite.
And because I am so insignificant, I can simply watch everything happen around me and marvel as it unravels and I learn new things, being unimportant, and only being important to those who have touched my life and I, in return, have touched theirs.
Isn't that comforting? That you don't have some eternal weight on your shoulders? And that when death comes, you can simply go free of all your etherial bonds?
I'll still be shit scared, most likely, but at least I can live in peace.
Because, at the end of the day, all that means is that I am free. Free to sit back, not care and just watch it unravel all around me, and to be infinitley interested in what comes next.
Even if it is atheisim that was right, and there is no afterlife...
I realise that I -am- going to die, and don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those idiots who thinks that they are peaceful and wise and that they won't be afraid when the end comes, hell - I WILL be afraid when the end comes, I'll be scared shitless, truth be told. Any human being who doesn't say the same is either: A) Very wise(extremley rare) or B) Kidding themselves.
But I draw comfort from the fact that I -am- insignificant, that I am just a spec in the grand cosmos.
Your opinions are really interesting, and definitely thought-provoking; I think that the point I agree the most with is the one about sex and love. Whenever I tell someone I "don't believe in love" (which sounds so much more dramatic than it actually is), I usually get laughed at... But the way you explained the sex/love relationship, in relation to our animalistic tendencies... That's exactly how I see it :) Thanks for this video!
the musik at 0:36 scares the shit outa me! when i have nightmares, i hear that kinda music when something scary is about to happen... i was scared to death when i first watched this video, and that music played! ;)
They way you talk is literally breath taking. I don't mean your accent, which is very cute, but the way you piece together you sentences and talk just slow enough that people will listen is just amazing. Thank you for putting yourself you YouTube. <3
We as human beings put high expectations upon our selves to be perfect and to discover perfection in every aspect of life. I wonder when we will discover that perfection could very well be the source of our demise rather than our success.
It's funny because in biology class people are always trying to compare occurrences in nature with other species to the human race, failing to realize that human have been able to manipulate their environment and lifestyle like no other species has. If you're a cheetah and you can't run fast and catch your food, you die. Unlike humans, where we would do whatever possible to help. I love people who get it, thanks Tom
oh my god, this so so sad because its so true. my mum works at a hospital, the people who come to her ward are uncurable ill or are going to die. so sometimes, when i talk with her about things like that, she tells me something about her job. seeing people die slowly and not beeing abel to help them... i think i wouldnt be abel to do that. sometimes she cries. Ive got so much respect for her.
I totally agree with you tom. Its just wrong
and the day you released this video is my and her birthday.
Unfortunately, we're not the only race that discludes the imperfect. That is what most of us are. Imperfect. But, all of our perceptions on beauty and what is right or wrong all stems from that animal instinct. Fuck this, I'm going to make a video of it.
It always interests me that the people with the most common sense, who are able to see things as they are and articulate without bias, are the people who are look little out of the norm.
interesting.. but if your theory about sex and how it relates to love is true how come u can sometimes get and emotional high just by talking or looking someone in the face without any physical contact even taking place?
Or is that just another animalistic message telling you that you are getting slightly closer to your ultimate goal..?
But if this is true then why to some people continue to stay together even after that kind of contact is over... hmm
Wow... I have never thought of any of that before. But it does all make sense, especially the thing about sex/love. Does that mean you don't believe in 'love'? Cause I don't, not the general public's opinion of love anyway. But then again I guess it's because humans are the only animals able think about our own existence (or so says science) that we have to think about why and not just do what we do & ka-bam: there's love.
Are you going to make more videos like this? On other topics? Please do!
I agree most of what you have to say here, especially the 3rd point. It reminded me of this quote:
"What would life be without art? Science prolongs life. To consist of what - eating, drinking, and sleeping? What is the good of living longer if it is only a matter of satisfying the requirements that sustain life? All this is nothing without the charm of art."- Sarah Bernhardt
To me it means do what you want to do, and whats right for you, because even with these "advances" life is short.
Hmm, I wonder if the idea that our minds expire would prove the immortality of afterlife wrong. At least in Cartesian philosophy, the mind is interchangeable with the soul. So if our minds can't last for the duration of an extended lifetime, how can they last for an eternity? I would like to explore that correlation between a long lifetime and the durability of the mind. Thanks for the mental awakening, Tom!
and may i say well said.. i have been trying to get my opinion about all that straight and trying to verbalize it but it wasn't possible.. its an argument with alot of people its fascinating though.. so very well said tom (:
You said you believed that 'love' only existed for more than e few thousand years, right? I am not entirely sure, I think love existed as long as human beings existed. Experiencing love (for people as well as for things) and thinking about the question 'why?' are those two things that seperate us from animals, I think.
this is my fav video by you so far and i can say that pritty much everything you said made complet sence and i have thought about stuff like this too and every thing you said i completly agree with we are just animals like monkeys and gorillas so why would we wanna change that surely we should be proud of what we are, but maybe even as animals we didnt like who we where so we evolved and changed to the humans
Although I agree with what you stated, I feel you left quite a large vacant area that is the growth of human mind.
The very ability that we can consider trimming, and dyeing and shaving off our primal reminisce shows a extreme mental leap forward.
It is the need to express oneself. Whether it be through their hair, the music they produce, the artwork the enjoy. Each of these specific characteristics that cater to each individual human is found in no other species.
I agree with everything but the love thing. Love is more then what you described but I'm not going to go all cheesy and be all love is the meaning of life on you. I think that it's more then that but I guess hard to explain. I think though the idea that there is only one person for everyone is a piece of crap. With the sheer size of the population on this planet there has got to be more then one peron you mesh with. I mean what if the one person who is right for you lives across the world?
actually brilliant :D although I panicked at the begining when all the colours and sound went weird.. I had a really bad feeling I had crashed my computer... and I really hope now that it was actually part of the video.. or else I'm going to look like a prat :D I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!
Wow... sooo bummed out now. I agree with some points I guess, but I definately think Love is more than just glorified lust. I'd say it's linked in with happiness, which we need to make life just a bit bearable, and sharing that happiness. idk, it's a mysterious concept, I just prefer not analyse things too deeply
According to Christianity, humans used to live until 200, and then for some reason the life span went down. and now it continues to rise back up again. due to your remark about how people are making it possible to live past your natural lifespan, you haven't taken religion into consideration.
BUT, even if religious based theories are out of the picture, there is the fact that no one really knows what our natural lifespan is because we've tampered with it so much.
you're intriguing i enjoy your music and your videos like this i hope to see u do more videos like this one so thank you for using your brain to put these thoughts into a well thought out video. ... and you're cute ^-^
i bet if someone much older and less modernly apealing had sed the exact same words it wudnt be viewed as much as it is.i enjoyed your hair, clothes and voice very much in this video but i clicked "favorite" for a different reason entirley.
I've never really considered that aspect of suicide, that no other species on the planet has ever decided to end it all. I think that suicide is mainly down to fear, (e.g. someone's fear of having to carry on living the way they do) and maybe suicide is a form of regression, of taking the easy way out. That doesn't seem like a trait typical of an evolved species, in my opinion, so in that respect, yes, we definitely are still animals.
I would love to have made a video response to this, but my webcam is, unfortunately, not working. So I will try to sum up my thoughts. I absolutely love how you have analyzed the way humans alter themselves to be in a completely different species or group than animals, even though we would be quite similar if technology never advanced or if media has changed the way we see our bodies and lifestyle. I have very similar opinions to yours and it's nice to see that someone else can think similarly.
the thing about people fearing death is strange to me because most people don't do what they want in life. they do what they were brought up to think they had to do.
go to school, get a job, save money, get married, have kids, and then buy and do all the things you wanted when you were in your 20s. except by this time they don't enjoy it anymore.
maybe that is why most people fear death, because they are not able to do the things they really want to do.
I think humans are capable of love in a very strange way. you add in lust to a sexual relationship, possessiveness into both types of relationships, and need to protect into both as well and out pops what is most likely love. I think that a lot of people don't want to put in the time and effort to make a healthy relationship, whether it is family, friends or partners. we think more of how we can be happy now.
you're deep in such a weird way, I like a lot! you really made me think about things I wouldn't think about if I wouldn't have watched this video, in a very good way though :)
I agreed with a lot of your points. There is something I found a bit iffy though. I dont think love can just just simply be grouped with lust. I love my kitties, but I definitely dont want them to suck my dick.
I think love mixed with lust can be a very powerful thing, but people confuse them for being the same.
I like the touches of blue in your hair, I don't like the total blue as much. and you have a nice speaking voice. and this video is very organic, it doesn't seem contrived at all.
This was the first hexachordal video I'd ever seen. I pretty much immediately fell in love with your videos. Your hair was blond and blue. Now it's 100% BLUE.
This video was fascinating, so I clicked the yellow button. :)
I feel like everybody takes such a negative tone on technology, and modern medicine. As much as we like to look back idealisticly to when life was just simpler and our glorious minds werent clouded with information we actually know nothing about, the very fact that I'm watching this video on the internet and being philosophically challenged is the perfect example of why sometimes, we change for the better.
MILSOM. If I ever meet you, I AM going immediatly demand you tell me why you unlisted this video. Actually I'll probably marvel at the fact that your face is three dimensional, tell you that your music is awesome, and THEN you're in for some serious questioning D:<

Thanks.

... continued. we are basing our reproductive partners on other things like personality and attractiveness. of course, we are usually more attracted to people who are more healthy such as liking toned abs, large breasts, and neat hair. but i suppose that basing mates on personality is something that matters now, because it is something that is important to success in life and being chosen as someones partner :)

on the concept of sex and love-
i personally think that sex is something that should be done only in love, but that is not what i really have to say.
because we marry for love, we are preventing evolution... evolution is when species are over time involuntarily bred to be better and more efficient and more functional. the weaker die and the stronger live and reproduce. but, in sex (and therefore reproduction) for love we are not basing our partner selection on efficiency and functionality...

I agree on the point that it is only a hiluman thing and it makes us crazy. But for some it is not about controlling life, it is the only way they can see release from the chaotic world of pain and suffering we live in today.

"alzheimers and dementia are not becoming bigger issues.."
he's basically saying that by advances in medicine and science, we are finding out how to make people better, and live longer.
keeping people alive for longer, and longer, its just giving them dementia, because there brain literally cannot handle being alive, because its past some kind of used by date.
hope that makes sense :)

And love is life. thnx.

Hope someone can make sense of this.

I'll still be shit scared, most likely, but at least I can live in peace.

interesting.. but if your theory about sex and how it relates to love is true how come u can sometimes get and emotional high just by talking or looking someone in the face without any physical contact even taking place?

I would like to explore that correlation between a long lifetime and the durability of the mind. Thanks for the mental awakening, Tom!

You said you believed that 'love' only existed for more than e few thousand years, right? I am not entirely sure, I think love existed as long as human beings existed. ythehellbj 1 year ago
Thanks for that. I loved it :D

According to Christianity, humans used to live until 200, and then for some reason the life span went down. and now it continues to rise back up again. due to your remark about how people are making it possible to live past your natural lifespan, you haven't taken religion into consideration.
BUT, even if religious based theories are out of the picture, there is the fact that no one really knows what our natural lifespan is because we've tampered with it so much.

Wow, you've given me so much to think about.

I absolutely love how you have analyzed the way humans alter themselves to be in a completely different species or group than animals, even though we would be quite similar if technology never advanced or if media has changed the way we see our bodies and lifestyle. the thing about people fearing death is strange to me because most people don't do what they want in life. they do what they were brought up to think they had to do.
go to school, get a job, save money, get married, have kids, and then buy and do all the things you wanted when you were in your 20s. except by this time they don't enjoy it anymore.
maybe that is why most people fear death, because they are not able to do the things they really want to do.
pokeXpanda 1 year ago
I think humans are capable of love in a very strange way. you add in lust to a sexual relationship, possessiveness into both types of relationships, and need to protect into both as well and out pops what is most likely love. I think that a lot of people don't want to put in the time and effort to make a healthy relationship, whether it is family, friends or partners. we think more of how we can be happy now.

I agreed with a lot of your points. There is something I found a bit iffy though. I dont think love can just just simply be grouped with lust. I love my kitties, but I definitely dont want them to suck my dick.
I think love mixed with lust can be a very powerful thing, but people confuse them for being the same.
