The mission is so new it is hard to estimate total cost so they can easily become 10X that.

Only difference is life support and recycling capabilities which makes it possible to get someone to mars with fossil fuels without them dying and give them a retour to earth.

Copernicus , Kepler , Galilei, Newton, Decartes were the ones who discovered all the foundations of astronomy.

Boyle, Faraday, Mendel, T. Kelvin, Planck and Einstein were the ones whom we owe all of our current scientific knowledge.

Mars is a real planet, with a protective atmosphere, a lot of carbon and water is available, and a regular day night cycle. The moon has none of that (water may be present on the South Pole). You say, "start small" but from a propulsion standpoint it is far easier to get to mars than it is to the moon! (Thus using the moon as "fuel station" for missions to mars is completely ridiculous).

I can't help but pick up on the self-reliant issue on a mission to mars here. To inhabit the moon and sustain life, initially, would be a snip compared to this and certainly over extended periods. Why are the US of A so intent on a mars landing when a moon landing (as a test of sustaining life) would be the first real test and lots could be learned. Again, and as always, I am left to ponder on why the moon is abondoned.
