It has a chance but my intuition tells me it won't happen until at least 2060. Consider the expense. If split evenly amongst all US residents, it would be roughly $3000 even with a very conservative trillion dollar estimated total. The mission is so new it is hard to estimate total cost so they can easily become 10X that.
@joshig1983 you make a good point and i understand that it will be very costly, but whether it happens in the 2030s, 40s, 50s or so on, at least it will probably happen in both our lifetimes

super cunts out here. There has totally nothing been improved to propulsion since the 1960s 70s when apollo reached the moon. Only difference is a slightly more burn efficiency with no drastic speed leaps in space. We still use solid and liquid fuels to propell. And thats as fast in 2010 as it were 50 years ago.
Only difference is life support and recycling capabilities which makes it possible to get someone to mars with fossil fuels without them dying and give them a retour to earth.
@martelly55 no you cant what are you talking about "nuclear fuel" IF you are talking about the proposed engine where you let off a series of nuclear explosions to propel the spacecraft then you would be mistaken because the amount of materials required supply such an engine would be astronomical (pun intended, laugh with me)....if you are talking about using nuclear reactors as a source of energy then I would have to tell you that such spacecraft already exists and it does not have such power!!!
@Qasimbajwaa (see nuclear marine propulsion for civil use and nuclear navy for military use). In addition, various types of nuclear propulsion have been proposed, and some of them tested, for spacecraft applications:
@Qasimbajwaa Nuclear propulsion includes a wide variety of propulsion methods that use some form of nuclear reaction as their primary power source. Many military submarines, aircraft carriers and, owing to crude oil prices and emissions, a growing number of large civilian surface ships, especially icebreakers, use nuclear reactors as their power plants
@martelly55 yes i know but it takes an extreme amount of power to travel to Mars in 2 weeks and nuclear power cannot supply that much energy there is no way we could move that fast currently it takes almost 6 months with the fastest spacecraft available to NASA
@Qasimbajwaa nuclear fuel can take us to Mars in two weeks, I watched a documentary last night called Mars Rising. We are more prepared to go to Mars than we were to go to the Moon because of new generation technology; with proper navigation and near or exact calculations, we can get there in two weeks which would give us a chance to study and explore more while on Mars.
@martelly55 Mars is 140 million miles away....2 weeks are 336 hours....if you do the math you would see that the speed needed for this is approx. 416000 mph....impossibly high speeds....if you saw something it was probably more sci-fi than science fact lol and btw you would have to move at that speed while carrying almost 30 crew members and enough supplies for at least 2 years at which point Mars would be close enough for a return journey (2 years=A LOT OF STUFF!)
@martelly55 wow....just wow...first of all if any mission is going to take place it will be an international one just because of the cost and that means that a lot of people are going to go from each space agency around the world and you cannot just send like 5 people because if you stay on Mars for 2 years then you need to have medical staff and engineers to monitor equipment not to mention the need for manual labor when it comes to setting up camp my friend trust me ive taken a course on this!
@martelly55 and even if there were absolutely no crew members and no supplies and we launched a Saturn V rocket to mars we would not get there in 2 weeks so your crackpot theory is still implausible
@Qasimbajwaa How long ago was Saturn V? Bro, we didn't even have hybrids nor HD television and it's freaking ten thousand years later where we're in 2010 which is like science fiction to them. lol you lost horribly.
@martelly55 omg how can you be so stupid DUDE THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL WE WOULD GET TO MARS IN 2 WEEKS WTF!?!? somebody tell this kid that he is wrong and also for the last time saturn V is THE BIGGEST and MOST POWERFUL rocket EVER MADE BY HUMANITY AND EVEN IT CANT GO that fast!
@Qasimbajwaa What I'm trying to say is theoretically, with promising test and heavily calculated estimates we can go to Mars in two weeks with the current blueprints of "Orion" we'll go to Mars in two FUCKING years. Damn it your going to make me drink!!!
This ship reminds me of the USS Discovery from 2001. The front end of ship has a rotating crew compartment with a long-slender chassis and a powerful nuclear, fusion engine.
wow these religioncomments are so annoying. wake up people! its 2010 y r u still stuck so hard on a god clearly no religion is right there r 1000's of religions and millions of sub religions in the world wat makes u think urs is right? clearly history shows (and im not talking about a mere 2000 years ago) that religion creates nothing but war..my thing is the mayans all had temples and various thing alinged with space, everything revolved around astronomy then they vanished..
just because theres 1000s of religions, doesnt mean all of them are fake... well, im just saying, like muslim, islam, greek, whatever those other religions are, are fake. only God is real.
why not dig under ground?why live on a surface ?beneath the surface the micro meteors cant hit you....i thing living on a surface is pointless and dangerous ...
Science documentaries such as these always scare and offend the religiously zealous. Sure, it must be tough trying to uphold stone-age mythologies about an Earth-centred universe created by a God who was reborn as his own son by a virgin mother to die to save us all from ourselves...if that makes sense I dunno what does!
Only in an overtyly politically-correct society can we not make statements of fact along the line that 'if you believe in God in the 21st century, then you truly are a moron.'
No man will ever step foot on another planet only If we had world peace can we finance the technology to make a ship to get to Mars LISTEN hammyzone God does exist FACT we never encounterd aliens and we are the only life in the universe everything else is theory rarly do people live to see 90 So believe in God because when you die its judgement day
That is lazy and naive. You are using examples from centuries ago, well before the theory of evolution was trully established and recoginised as sound scientific fact.
As for Einstein, he often used the word 'God' but not in the narrow infantile manner in which you'd like to think he did. He used it as a metaphor for that which we do not understand. Do some further 'research' and you will see that Einstein fully rejected the notion of a creator.
Peter Higgs, Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, Steven Weinberg off the top of my head were all non-believers. and if you've done anything past the most superficial reading of Einstein's work you'll learn that he is anything but a believer in god. take a look at what percent of laureates of the Nobel Science prizes are godless people.
@hammyzone "Always scare and offend the religiously zealous?" Frankly as one who by your definition would be considered such I'm afraid your grossly generalized statement has at lease one major exception, that of myself, and is therefore untrue. There are many who both promote and work in the space programs of the world who are men and women of faith.
@hammyzone I think deep down we all belive that their is some driving force. Call that what you want most people would call that God. Are you saying your not evan willing to entertain the thought that their might be a plan and this might not have all happened by chance? I do agree with you on one thing, if you take the bible litterally in this day and age than you probbly have the mental capactity of a caveman or you have been throgh some serious shit in your life and need the support.
I am religious and was not scared or offended by the documentary. People like you know nothing of religion and since people of your kind form the media we have a distorted picture of religion and of religious people. As to stone age mythology I would just remind you that most of the pioneers of science were all religious.
@hammyzone Does it make you smart, because you are anti-religious? You assume you are, above the religious prospects. So you think technology is destroying our beliefs? I guess the wheel destroyed our worldviews aswell eh? The bible is a book of metaphore, surely you understand that don't you? If we descover aliens, what does that tell you? Nothing. Your comments have no real information, just a mocking that uses ignorrant sentances.
@hammyzone Some think god is an alien. Why can't he be? It makes sence. A group of indeviduals sent into our galexy only to abduct patients for their studies, many docs. conferm and alien presence giving them the ability to heal. Do you think they would create a hibrid human with that capablity? Jesus! That would also tell us why Mary was a vergin. Plus, the steriotipical alien fits the charecteristics of a modern angel, coincidece? White skinned and beutiful.
@hammyzone (READ OTHER TWO COMMENTS FIRST) may i quote hte bible for a second? "We will create them in our image" who's we? Please don't laugh and say my claims of Extra Biological enteties are false, because ive watched litteral 200 docs. and 50 clips. Not including ghost docs. which could also fall into this catigory. Again, why can't they be aliens? WHY?
@hammyzone And if think believing in a god or higher power is limited to believing that Earth is the center of the universe and that a woman by the name of Mary gave birth to a person named Jesus, then you're no less ignorant than the people you are trying to chastise. Not believing in God and being a moron are not mutually exclusive, as you've demonstrated.
I would really like to see this when the man kind reach mars because the future of human is on space and mars is the first step I really love the space so peaceful and powerful and also an infinite source of resources
no air ,no water, no plants........we can`t even look after this planet! so someone explain the point of going there? micro meteors, gravity that can badly damage our bones and muscles....the list goes on and on.
so we can learn, and adapt, because no matter how well this planet is looked after, it won't be here forever, right now, it's an "all our eggs in one basket" deal, certainly not something we want, if we simply got bad luck and an oversize comet came flying into us, we'd all be killed, this way, the human race would live on, pretty important imo

Honestly to say its all about creation of all mighty ALLAH which is return on holy Quran,
ALLAH created the universe made competent for human to live; otherwise ALLAH could make another planet as like atmosphere of universe. We get anything in the universe very easily such like water fruits and oxygen Necessary things for us, but really we are hardly grateful for this to our all mighty and most merciful ALLAH. ALLAH created us and sent us in world to worship only ALLAH not to other.
It was actually humans who made it easy to obtain these resources. Shed all your man made tools and see how long you survive on earth. We are the GODS. If im wrong, GOD will remove this comment
so don't say that blasphemy we are in perfect distance not to freeze or burn to death thank God we have the resorces to be alive are willing to risk there being no God then to die and wake up in heaven or hell I hope you give me a good answer friend
it wouldn't matter if our planet wasn't in the perfect place, it's our species that adapted to the conditions of the planet, not the other way around, watching the movie "Home" on youtube will enlighten you to that.
Not true If you know your history it was only with the last 200 years that inventions and technology made major break throughs how come man kind was un educated and dumb for thousands of years only good and building pyramids and monuments IT WAS THE HAND OF GOD AND SOON THIS WORLD WILL SEE ITS END WE ARE AT THE END OF THE 7th SEAL IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION
i wasn't speaking of man adapting through technology, i was speaking of man adapting to the planet through evolution, It's too bad that 'home' movie doesn't seem to be on youtube anymore, it would've been good for you
but i'll put it simple: the earth started off with mostly CO2 in the atmosphere, but a certain plant started growing that changed that, and brought us the atmosphere we know today, then, animals could adapt to this oxygen, and breath outside of water (we used to be sea creatures)
If Darwins theory of evolution is true why haven't humans evolved to mutants its just not possible we are related to the animals but they serve our purpose the fact is we will all die someday and this earth is a test the middle ground between heaven and hell
you think we're meant to evolve every other weekend? it happens over thousands of years, if not millions
no, we evolve, to adapt, when there is something new to adapt to, then we will, for instance, if we go to mars, and generations of people are born there, they'll be weaker than us, with less bone/muscle mass, as on a planet with 1/3rd gravity, it isn't needed.
maybe you should do some research on this, you obviously don't know what you're talking about
This comment is so ridiculous, you have obviously been watching too much xmen. Go read about darwins theory and come back to this thread when you are wiser. Also, technically we are all mutants because we will all have at least one mutation.
God does exist and when we all die or the end comes and believe me it will end we will be judged I hope you and I are in the favor of God because there are 2 ends heaven or hell you decide genius
give me one piece of scientific fact that a supernatural entity called 'GOD' exists and i will believe you, Overwise i will assume that this is a belief, and we are all entitled to our own beliefs, but they are subjective and may not be true
Dont quote religious bullshit when we are talking science. If we make it to the moon, it wont be because of god, it will be because of human intelligence prevailing
You think..... then why haven't we been able to go to mars yet we have reached the sumit of technology the world is in an economic depression we will never have the funds to make a ship with that kind of technology moron
the economy has nothing to do with it, capitalist societies are doomed to go through a cycle of depression and then rise again, just like in the 80s. Also who says we have reached the summit of technology? YOU lol. Your thinking short sighted, nothing is impossible in the infinite future that lies ahead, as long as we dont kill ourselves.

Why risk human life when we have the power of robots?
Why hurt 1000's of family and friends if the Mars/Moon missions go wrong. you get the same results if you send a robot out there, or is it that NASA want to cash in on the fact that they've sent man to Mars?
you are correct, risking human life may seem pointless at its face value. However, the purpose of engineering and carrying out a human mission to mars is to see what needs to be done to send humans out into space and land them on a planet that can be eventually terraformed. Besides, i can come up with millions of examples where human life has been wasted pointlessly. You probably are wasting your life right now by doing nothing constructive o_x
i believe there is life on mars or some were in the universe, why should we be the only living planet in such a vast universe please see my video response it does make you wonder
The cosmos is far too big for only us to be here. I have no doubt that life exits, but I do have doubts if we will ever come face-to-face with them because they will be too far away for it to be ever possible
I agree, why go straight to mars, start small, the amount that can be learned by attempting the colonization of the moon can only benifit our future mars attempts.
The moon is vastly inferior as a candidate for colonization compared to mars. Mars is a real planet, with a protective atmosphere, a lot of carbon and water is available, and a regular day night cycle. The moon has none of that (water may be present on the South Pole). You say, "start small" but from a propulsion standpoint it is far easier to get to mars than it is to the moon! (Thus using the moon as "fuel station" for missions to mars is completely ridiculous).
I can't help but pick up on the self-reliant issue on a mission to mars here. To inhabit the moon and sustain life, initially, would be a snip compared to this and certainly over extended periods. Why are the US of A so intent on a mars landing when a moon landing (as a test of sustaining life) would be the first real test and lots could be learned. Again, and as always, I am left to ponder on why the moon is abondoned.
The fact is that life would be far easier to support on mars because it is much easier to utilize the resources it has. Initial missions to mars WOULDN'T rely on greenhouses for food, as this video seems to suggest, but would be deployed for research for future missions and for a permanently manned base. On mars greenhouses can be simple inflatable structures, kept warm by the strong greenhouse effects. On the moon the temperatures created by a greenhouse would be unbearably high, and your...
...greenhouse would need to be at least 10cm of glass to prevent solar flares from killing your crops. To top it off the moon has a 28 day/night cycle which is completely unsuitable for crop growth, while mars has a 24.4 hour day. The energetics of plant growth makes artificial lighting unfathomable on any meaningful scale. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and trace elements are all readily available on mars... no rock melting required, or trips to dark craters in search of water.
I can only see the moon as inhabited by a small scientific or mining community. The moon and mars are so different the idea that we must go to the moon in order to learn how to live on mars is ridiculous. Training here on earth would be far more relevant and affordable than going to the moon. Resource utilization on the moon is completely different than on mars. The same goes for the types of exploration. The only thing the moon has in common with mars is that it's not here on earth.

Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa (see nuclear marine propulsion for civil use and nuclear navy for military use). In addition, various types of nuclear propulsion have been proposed, and some of them tested, for spacecraft applications:
martelly55 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa Nuclear propulsion includes a wide variety of propulsion methods that use some form of nuclear reaction as their primary power source. Many military submarines, aircraft carriers and, owing to crude oil prices and emissions, a growing number of large civilian surface ships, especially icebreakers, use nuclear reactors as their power plants
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 yes i know but it takes an extreme amount of power to travel to Mars in 2 weeks and nuclear power cannot supply that much energy there is no way we could move that fast currently it takes almost 6 months with the fastest spacecraft available to NASA
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa nuclear fuel can take us to Mars in two weeks, I watched a documentary last night called Mars Rising. We are more prepared to go to Mars than we were to go to the Moon because of new generation technology; with proper navigation and near or exact calculations, we can get there in two weeks which would give us a chance to study and explore more while on Mars.
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 Mars is 140 million miles away....2 weeks are 336 hours....if you do the math you would see that the speed needed for this is approx. 416000 mph....impossibly high speeds....if you saw something it was probably more sci-fi than science fact lol and btw you would have to move at that speed while carrying almost 30 crew members and enough supplies for at least 2 years at which point Mars would be close enough for a return journey (2 years=A LOT OF STUFF!)
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa wow are you that off since I'm doing something let me make this quick, we are taking only 5 or 6 around young crew members not twenty.
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 wow....just wow...first of all if any mission is going to take place it will be an international one just because of the cost and that means that a lot of people are going to go from each space agency around the world and you cannot just send like 5 people because if you stay on Mars for 2 years then you need to have medical staff and engineers to monitor equipment not to mention the need for manual labor when it comes to setting up camp my friend trust me ive taken a course on this!
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@martelly55 and even if there were absolutely no crew members and no supplies and we launched a Saturn V rocket to mars we would not get there in 2 weeks so your crackpot theory is still implausible
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa How long ago was Saturn V? Did we even have hybrids back in the day, NO!!! consider it, you lost!! :D

@martelly55 EVEN THOUGH SATURN V IS OLD ITS STILL THE MOST POWERFUL SPACECRAFT EVER CREATED DUMBFUCK
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa How long ago was Saturn V? Bro, we didn't even have hybrids nor HD television and it's freaking ten thousand years later where we're in 2010 which is like science fiction to them. lol you lost horribly.
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 omg how can you be so stupid DUDE THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL WE WOULD GET TO MARS IN 2 WEEKS WTF!?!? somebody tell this kid that he is wrong and also for the last time saturn V is THE BIGGEST and MOST POWERFUL rocket EVER MADE BY HUMANITY AND EVEN IT CANT GO that fast!
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa Dumb fuck now you got me pissed!!! Well what was it's source of fuel.
martelly55 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa What I'm trying to say is theoretically, with promising test and heavily calculated estimates we can go to Mars in two weeks with the current blueprints of "Orion" we'll go to Mars in two FUCKING years. Damn it your going to make me drink!!!
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 do you know the name of anything that can make you travel at 416,000 mph? no, because nothing of the sort exists...
Qasimbajwaa 1 year ago
@Qasimbajwaa I said planning, science, and estimates gives us the answer for the time it will take which concluded to two Earth weeks.
martelly55 1 year ago
@martelly55 how can you estimate that it would take 2 weeks to go Mars when there is absolutely no way of traveling that fast?

Science documentaries such as these always scare and offend the religiously zealous. Sure, it must be tough trying to uphold stone-age mythologies about an Earth-centred universe created by a God who was reborn as his own son by a virgin mother to die to save us all from ourselves...if that makes sense I dunno what does!
Only in an overtyly politically-correct society can we not make statements of fact along the line that 'if you believe in God in the 21st century, then you truly are a moron.'

flex78er 2 years ago
Just do a little research and you can see that every great scientist believed in god:
Copernicus , Kepler , Galilei, Newton, Decartes were the ones who discovered all the foundations of astronomy.
Boyle, Faraday, Mendel, T. Kelvin, Planck and Einstein were the ones whom we owe all of our current scientific knowledge.
all of the above mentioned scientists believed in God - in a Creator who created everything.
shai4ais 1 year ago
@ shai4ais
That is lazy and naive. You are using examples from centuries ago, well before the theory of evolution was trully established and recoginised as sound scientific fact.
As for Einstein, he often used the word 'God' but not in the narrow infantile manner in which you'd like to think he did. He used it as a metaphor for that which we do not understand. Do some further 'research' and you will see that Einstein fully rejected the notion of a creator.
hammyzone 1 year ago
@ hammyzone
that was lazy because I can't waste any more of my time on explaining things to people who never understand, sorry
shai4ais 1 year ago
@shai4ais
"every great scientist"
Peter Higgs, Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Stephen Hawking, Steven Weinberg off the top of my head were all non-believers. and if you've done anything past the most superficial reading of Einstein's work you'll learn that he is anything but a believer in god. take a look at what percent of laureates of the Nobel Science prizes are godless people.
gideonstargrave 6 months ago 2

DansFishChannel 1 year ago
@hammyzone
I am religious and was not scared or offended by the documentary. People like you know nothing of religion and since people of your kind form the media we have a distorted picture of religion and of religious people. As to stone age mythology I would just remind you that most of the pioneers of science were all religious.

@hammyzone One thing they have correct ( religious people) is that the cosmos did indeed get created.
the question is by who or what? We dont know. hence we have religion.
SmilyFaceEquilibrium 10 months ago
@hammyzone Does it make you smart, because you are anti-religious? You assume you are, above the religious prospects. So you think technology is destroying our beliefs? I guess the wheel destroyed our worldviews aswell eh? The bible is a book of metaphore, surely you understand that don't you? If we descover aliens, what does that tell you? Nothing. Your comments have no real information, just a mocking that uses ignorrant sentances.
Putz4Ever 9 months ago
@hammyzone Some think god is an alien. Why can't he be? It makes sence. A group of indeviduals sent into our galexy only to abduct patients for their studies, many docs. conferm and alien presence giving them the ability to heal. Do you think they would create a hibrid human with that capablity? Jesus! That would also tell us why Mary was a vergin. Plus, the steriotipical alien fits the charecteristics of a modern angel, coincidece? White skinned and beutiful.
Putz4Ever 9 months ago
@hammyzone (READ OTHER TWO COMMENTS FIRST) may i quote hte bible for a second? "We will create them in our image" who's we? Please don't laugh and say my claims of Extra Biological enteties are false, because ive watched litteral 200 docs. and 50 clips. Not including ghost docs. which could also fall into this catigory. Again, why can't they be aliens? WHY?
Putz4Ever 9 months ago
@hammyzone Couldn't an intelligant race be prone to creating life on an abanndoned planet?
Putz4Ever 9 months ago
@hammyzone And if think believing in a god or higher power is limited to believing that Earth is the center of the universe and that a woman by the name of Mary gave birth to a person named Jesus, then you're no less ignorant than the people you are trying to chastise. Not believing in God and being a moron are not mutually exclusive, as you've demonstrated.

so we can learn, and adapt, because no matter how well this planet is looked after, it won't be here forever, right now, it's an "all our eggs in one basket" deal, certainly not something we want, if we simply got bad luck and an oversize comet came flying into us, we'd all be killed, this way, the human race would live on, pretty important imo

ALLAH created us and sent us in world to worship only ALLAH not to other.

it wouldn't matter if our planet wasn't in the perfect place, it's our species that adapted to the conditions of the planet, not the other way around, watching the movie "Home" on youtube will enlighten you to that.
supertrinko 2 years ago 5
Not true If you know your history it was only with the last 200 years that inventions and technology made major break throughs how come man kind was un educated and dumb for thousands of years only good and building pyramids and monuments IT WAS THE HAND OF GOD AND SOON THIS WORLD WILL SEE ITS END WE ARE AT THE END OF THE 7th SEAL IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION
flex78er 2 years ago
i wasn't speaking of man adapting through technology, i was speaking of man adapting to the planet through evolution, It's too bad that 'home' movie doesn't seem to be on youtube anymore, it would've been good for you
but i'll put it simple: the earth started off with mostly CO2 in the atmosphere, but a certain plant started growing that changed that, and brought us the atmosphere we know today, then, animals could adapt to this oxygen, and breath outside of water (we used to be sea creatures)
supertrinko 2 years ago 2
If Darwins theory of evolution is true why haven't humans evolved to mutants its just not possible we are related to the animals but they serve our purpose the fact is we will all die someday and this earth is a test the middle ground between heaven and hell
flex78er 2 years ago
you think we're meant to evolve every other weekend? it happens over thousands of years, if not millions
no, we evolve, to adapt, when there is something new to adapt to, then we will, for instance, if we go to mars, and generations of people are born there, they'll be weaker than us, with less bone/muscle mass, as on a planet with 1/3rd gravity, it isn't needed.
maybe you should do some research on this, you obviously don't know what you're talking about
supertrinko 2 years ago 2
This comment is so ridiculous, you have obviously been watching too much xmen. Go read about darwins theory and come back to this thread when you are wiser. Also, technically we are all mutants because we will all have at least one mutation.

the economy has nothing to do with it, capitalist societies are doomed to go through a cycle of depression and then rise again, just like in the 80s. Why risk human life when we have the power of robots?
Why hurt 1000's of family and friends if the Mars/Moon missions go wrong. you get the same results if you send a robot out there, or is it that NASA want to cash in on the fact that they've sent man to Mars?

you gotta take risks to get anywhere in life
supertrinko 2 years ago
you are correct, risking human life may seem pointless at its face value.

I agree, why go straight to mars, start small, the amount that can be learned by attempting the colonization of the moon can only benifit our future mars attempts.
Shanx011 3 years ago
The moon is vastly inferior as a candidate for colonization compared to mars. Mars is a real planet, with a protective atmosphere, a lot of carbon and water is available, and a regular day night cycle. The moon has none of that (water may be present on the South Pole). You say, "start small" but from a propulsion standpoint it is far easier to get to mars than it is to the moon! (Thus using the moon as "fuel station" for missions to mars is completely ridiculous).
alancj05 3 years ago
I can't help but pick up on the self-reliant issue on a mission to mars here. To inhabit the moon and sustain life, initially, would be a snip compared to this and certainly over extended periods. Why are the US of A so intent on a mars landing when a moon landing (as a test of sustaining life) would be the first real test and lots could be learned. Again, and as always, I am left to ponder on why the moon is abondoned.
frankfranklyn 3 years ago
