  • There was a lot of British involvement in the American Civil War, much to the disaproval of Lord Palmerston's Liberal government. There were New York Regiments known as the Irish Brigade (Ireland was still under British rule), New York Highlanders, drawn from Scotland, and a regiment called the New York British Volunteers

    There were as many volunteers from the UK fighting for the South

    The Battle of Bull Run 1861 also had regiments on both sides that were made up of almost entirely Brit vol's
