  • He nailed it. ;-D lol.

  • LOL Terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is not a Texan accent...lol...closer to just deep south than Texan, and he screws it up several times...someone in the south would ask him where he was from knowing he didn't actually grow up in the south...the old lady has a solid east Texas accent.

  • Gosh! He sounds like a completely different person! So natural! He did live in America & Canada so likely he knows what he's doing! so versatile & ready & willing to take on any role. Love him !

  • Technically, there is no "one" Texas accent. Most of the time the accents in Texas broken down into East Texas, Northern Plains, Western, City, and South Texas. East Texas is like Deep South speech, Plains is closer to the Middle part of the South (think Arkansas, Tennessee), Western (G.W. Bush), City(Dallas, Austin, Midwest Inflected), and South Texas (elements of a Spanish/Chicano/Tejano accent. In this clip, Firth's accent sounds close to a Deep South, almost Alabama accent. I'

  • How can you say no to those bright blue eyes?!

  • Oh...my. Lol.

  • @twtape Who has bright blue eyes? Colin Firth? His eyes are brown....:)

  • lol, this is funny, yes? lol

  • HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • This is...strange. I can't hear Colin Firth speak in any accent but his own British Accent. Some actors can pull this off. Colin, as much as I love him, is not one of them. He needs to stick with his own amazing accent.

  • sorry after watching Pride and Prejudice 20 times i cannot hear him any other way but British no matter how he tries. LOL

  • that is terrible accent! Oh well he gave it his best shot. . . .Yall

  • his british tone is slipping through, anyone not knowing he is british can tell he ain't from texas. he is a good actor though.

  • spot on. Colin

  • wow!!

  • You call this "texan accent" I call it everyday English since I'm from Texas:)

  • Why does he sound like Ron Paul?

  • Lol he is to british he can't help it

  • @gustawsieustaw spot on

  • lol i'm cracking up so much right now...

  • A great actor, very versatile. also speaks perfect Italian.

  • Great. Now I want to watch this movie.

The accent fits him. I like both accents with him.

  • Nothing's as bad as Anne Hathaway's British accent

  • Wow, its quite accurate!

  • Good but kinda nasal for a true Texan.

  • lol.

  • Was there a helium leak? His voice is deeper than that!

  • not at all.

  • Why couldn't they have let him use his native accent!! He's awful! Painful to listen to.

  • a little high pitched for a true Texan

  • Hell, slow broadband, 29 seconds in 20 minutes and counting .. and nobody spoke yet! Won't you put that accent right back at the start fella?

  • I'm from central Texas and this accent sounds odd to me.

  • As a Texan I can say this is one of the better Texan accents I've seen on film. It's funny seeing Firth's mannerisms while using this accent.

  • I'm texan, and this accent is.... interesting, to say the least.

  • This is my favorite English accent. :)

    I'm not a native speaker.

  • I was raised 45 miles south of Tyler, Texas and he does pull off a really good East Texas accent. I could hear people I knew growing up in his voice several times. He is missing the "yes ma'am/no ma'am/yessum's that I grew up with though. I'm not surprised that he was able to do this though, it's Colin Firth, the man's an amazing actor. I like that he incorporated the posture as well.

  • @Falcun21 Bro...I'm going to need to see your papers if you heard east Texas accent anywhere but in spurts from Firth in that piece...amazing actor but terrible accent, especially east Texas...it's about how you put the words together and transition that makes the east Texas accent, not just how you say the words...I would've asked him where he was from, knowing it wasn't originally south of the Mason Dixon...

  • This is funny--my late husband was a Texan and had the same last name --Colin doesn't have the accent, though.

  • I can't tell if he has an accent or not, then again, I've never been out of Texas.

  • in and would've talked like that to her, I would've gotten a slap across the face and a great big ol spankin when I got home.

  • I am from Houston, Texas and I say job well don. Now I know that not all people sound like this, in fact I don't at all, but I have family that lives up in Corsicana and in Tyler and Colin really imitates the Tyler accent well. For the people saying that no one talks like that, have y'all ever been up to east Texas? Colin, great job... Even though every once in a while some British leaked through when you mumbled :)

Plus I completely agree about him not bein polite enough, if I were a kid aga

  • Is the old lady the one from Requiem for a Dream?

  • Actually people in Texas towns DO sound like this. Firth gets close (at times he sounded like a posh Texan) but I agree that there needs to be more Mam and Miss because he was starting to sound rude and Texans are very passive.

  • get in ... first dislike!!

  • IM A TRUE TEXAN , BORN AND RAISED I KNOW THE ACCENTS VERY WELL HE COMES VERY CLOSE IN DEMEANOR AN SOUND. NEEDS MORE WORK. WE ACTUALLY SAY ALOT OF "MAM" AND "MISS" AT THE BEGINNING AND END WHEN REFERING TO A WOMAN. AND IF YOU DONT HEAR THESE TYPES OF ACCENTS IN TEXAS WELL THEN YOU AINT FROM TEXAS. YALL BE GOOD NOW YA HEAR.

  • He sounds like Jeff Foxworthy!

  • Yeah even the most severe of Texan accents are not this strong.. I'm born and raised Texan and I talk nothing like this.. Neither my sister nor father nor mother (born and raised in california)...

  • @allpeeps4me ...you don't because you grew up in a California household...transplants don't pick up accents...and if you haven't heard more authentic accents than this, then you need to get out of downtown Dallas and find an elementary school in the mid-cities and listen to the kids talk...we tend to grow out of the accent, and kids have super thick accents...it's awesome.

  • Call us texans what you will but I guarantee most of y'all don't live the fun and exciting life we texans live

Hey and to have this sexy man interpret a Texan accent makes me feel proud to be a Texan

  • @No1DaleJrYankeeFan I couldn't agree more! I love being a Texan!

  • @No1DaleJrYankeeFan haha...puh-leeze. The hubris of people from Texas cracks me up. Y'all got some of the biggest strip malls and dopiest politicians around. Hit the smelling salts again doll and wake yourself up.

  • Im From Houston,Texas and iDon't Sound Nothing Like That Videos Lik This Make Other People Call Us Country Bunkins We All Dont Talk Like That

  • OMG thats not how we talk lmao -____- Im from texas! lol

  • @mreno713

i'm from Texas too and you're right!!!

He looks a Canadian who's trying to imitate John Wayne!!!

  • It's not that bad. I'll tell you what's bad. An American who does a horrible posh and fake British accent. I think you hear it quite often sometimes. Luv Colin Firth <3

  • It's not perfect, but this guy is an amazing actor.

  • good job colni, but you're english accent is still quite obvious...

  • If you are a fan of Colin Firth you can follow my twitter account @justCOLINFIRTH :) hope to talk to you.

  • I lived in Texas my entire life but i do not have an accent.

  • oh la la il la tellement bien! haha

  • He could sell me ANYTHING...if he looked at me like that...with that face....Hell..I'd even BUY those canisters of hazardous waste! lol

  • I LIIKE this Texas accen alot Y'ALL.

  • Childbirth, Winning

    Colin Firth, Winning

    Twinkie Winkes purse, Duh... Winning

  • hahah i miss his sexy english accent. But he is verry good :D

  • Holy shit. I love Colin and think he's a great actor but this accent sucks. sounds like a gay hillbilly with a cold

  • @jmnussful1 That's how we sound. ;~;

  • @KisamierofRuairi don't be so hard on yourself

  • brilliant actor

  • He sounds like Edward Norton Jr here.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=X1jj8G-If3M

  • ok guys but just to summarize:what are the main features of the southern accent? the cadence? the pronunciation?

anyway in this video i linked below tehre is Delbert Mc Clinton speaking and he was born in Texas, is a good exemple of southern accent?

  • lol it sounds like a cartoon xD

  • Oh its horrible. But thats alright. Its Colin. He can be forgiven for anything. I still love him. He's so beautiful and awesome.

  • He doesn't even LOOK like a Texan. lol ...he's very handsome....and very British..and one hellava actor...co he can do whatever he wants! So there!

  • @teeger66 what are you saying, that Texans are unattractive? LOL

But I agree he's gorgeous and a wonderful actor and deserves respect for taking the accent challenge on...

  • @nightswimmer99 Yes Indeed! He is VERY gorgeous! I meant...they should have dressed him more like a Texan..i.e. cowboy boots, Western style jacket and/or shirt, and maybe even a cowboy hat. Otherwise...yeah...I guess he could pass for a Texan! He's adorable tho'...and I love him!

  • i have lived in texas all my life. this isn't a bad accent. there are like certain words, rhythms that are jumping the shark. and he's talking really fast at times. but for a british actor, respect.

  • Oh, this is adorably bad. Colin, you have such a beautiful natural accent -- why fake a Texan one?

  • @HappyTexan3 Cause he is Texan in the film .

  • It's certainly good enough to suspend disbelief, which means it's good enough.

  • WHAT THE HELL. I got used to it by 1:20. He's awesome!

  • Hunh, didn't expect to find him making it work that easily. It suits him :)

  • I'm Polish, but I used to live in Durham and no one there speaks like Ellen Burstyn does here. She sounds like Forrest Gump

  • You know, after listening to him speaking in his normal accent in another video and then hearing him in this one, I'm more impressed with how well he does a Texas accent. I still think Ellen Burstyn sounds like Scarlett O'Hara.

  • missineichen: So many people have moved to Texas in recent decades from parts of the country that don't speak with a southern accent that if he weren't such a celebrity, I don't think Texans would notice his speech, IF he were speaking as he does in this movie. Of course, all Americans would know he was English if he spoke with his everyday accent.

  • i keep thinking the words are coming from someone elses mouth cos im so used to him using his british accent!

  • I actually like it :D

Prefer his real accent, but this is nice too...hell, I just love him in general!

  • I'm also a native Texan; I have a doctorate in linguistics, so maybe I'm pickier. I caught a lot of mistakes from both Colin and the old lady. Hers was more off than his, however. She sounded like "Gone With the Wind" was her model. His accent is more like a modern Texas accent.

  • @oyapeg i was wondering, is his accent genuine enough to pass as a local modern texan? hehe i cant tell, im australian

  • hahaha it sounds so nasal!

  • @IliveinMA he always has a nasal voice

  • Native Texan here. I was prepared to be horrified, but he actually sounds pretty good. Maybe a few slightly off syllables here and there, but a lot better than any English accent I could achieve.

  • Weirdddddd. I'm from tn and around this accent pretty much all the time. This throws me off coming from him lol

  • you guys are the one with the accent ;p

  • ironic hehe

  • Colin is amazing! He can play anything...but yeah, it is kind of wierd hearing him speak with a southern accent...

  • Very strange, indeed! He should definitely speak with the British accent! His real accent is wonderful. And - of course - he's still gorgeous. No doubt about that!

  • This is too weird!!! I think we're just so used to hearing his real accent since its the only one he ever uses.... this is gonna take some getting used to!

  • Oh thanks Merirouge for posting this. I've been waiting so long to hear this accent. Have to say it is one of the most astonishingly bad Texas accents I've ever heard, lol. But he's still gorgeous and was courageous to try it.

  • Sounds perfect to me but then I am certainly no expert on the Texan accent.Weird though.

  • O____________O Sono sconvolta XD noooo... voglio il mio british accent <3

  • this is just too weird :)

  • hahahaahahaha!! Thanks, merirouge - very strange! Funny to put the accent together with his gorgeousness!
