One of the best scenes ever in any movie is the last  5 minutes of this film. Th last verbal exchange between Curt and Robert is priceless. More specifically Curt's last line in the movie..

I don't know, it's hard to differentiate 2 nations if both crews speak the same language. Was really a great mistake not to cast germans as nazi's crew - it would make a much bigger effect...

This is one of the best WWII movies I've ever seen. It humanizes both of the adversaries in the battle, and shows how even enemies can develop a grudging respect for one another. The destroyer's doctor does a great job of representing all of the men who wished to retain their humanity, and hope for the humanity of the world, even in the midst of this terrible conflict.

i read that the sub was ok unless a depth charge or hedge hog or squid was to exploded less then 6 feet from the outer hull. the inner presure hull would be ruptured and that would bring the end of the submarines crew all hands

would not have wanted to be inside one of those subs, depth charges were designed to shake a sub apart.

the shock waves sent out by a depth charge could really rattle you, I read that some men had their backs broken if they happened to be leaning up against the hull.

Robert Mitchum was a really cool actor,had a great screen presence about him.This is one of my favourites.

The ship is 'portrayed' by DE 634 USS Whitehurst, on which my Dad served proudly in the Korean War, at the Pusan Perimeter, where she was a floating power station (her torpedo tubes were replaced with a large power cable spool during a ww2 refit following a Kamikaze hit at Okinawa.

Another Star Trek related fact to this movie. The U-Boat's second in command was played by Theodore Bikel, who portrayed Worf's foster father in the first year of ST:TNG.

And Theodore Bikel also played Captain Ludwig von Trapp in the original Broadway production of "The Sound of Music". BTW, he played Worf's foster father in a third season episode of Next Gen, not first season.

I've seen this movie 200 times. The final scene with Mitchum and Jurgens on the fantail of the destroyer is one of the best endings to a World War II movie. Courtesy of imdb:
