Back to the video, this would be amazingly cool if it ever became practical. It would be nice to drive your car and...well...not have to drive. Automated cars which can drive with no driver intervention from point A to point B would be really neat. One could nap on the way to work!
This technology would so benefit me since I usually drive 50 miles a day and mostly at traffic hour. I hate traffic with passion and it's usually caused by people who don't have the patience to drive properly. Of course this technology should be optional and not mandatory. However, there are still too many uncertainties about this technology. The number one uncertainty are the drivers that are driving manually outside the car train. You can't predict what dumb crap they're going to do.
No amount of technology and data inputting can address the unpredictable nature of man.
Like I was saying the first time someone cuts this convoy up at 90mph to get off a missed exit, and making the rest of the convoy to brake hard it will all get condemned and made illegal.
I love when new technology is developed. It makes all the idiots panic. Well, if this makes you panic they have a piece of transportation just for you, its known as the short bus.
@Gnillob802 lol, there's nothing wrong with new technology...it's just that sometimes, it can kill you. :-) Think about when radium was sold in stores as a "supplement," or the Hindenburg, or those X-ray machines for fitting shoes for kids in shoe stores. It's no reason to panic, but there's always danger with new technology.
@cocacola443 Your examples are too antiquated to use as examples. Government regulations exist today that didn't 50 or 100 years ago. The FDA didn't exist when radium and cocaine was sold in drug stores 100 years ago. Regarding the x-ray machines, there are additional regulations for products that didn't exist then, however, let it be noted that among the thousands who used it there was no health problems detected among customers though one operator who mistreated the product was burned.
@Gnillob802 lol, It's a YouTube comment--I can't give every example. EVERY new technology comes with dangers. The dangers aren't realized until later. It's hard to give examples of recent technology since the dangers haven't been found, yet. You want a more recent example? Google "Therac-25." It's a radiation dosing machine that killed several people due to hardware and software bugs. I didn't say panic. I said there are dangers. There always will be some dangers with new technology.
@Gnillob802 You've got to be a troll because you're not listening to me. I never said to not develop new technology...I said new technology has been and can be dangerous. I recommend caution, I don't recommend hampering progress. If you continue to misunderstand me, I can't help you.
@Gnillob802 "Your ancestors probably said the same thing about Edison, Marconi, Bell and the Wright Brothers. Fortunately no one listened."
I didn't say anything about individual people or inventors. I said new technology can be dangerous, and the dangers may not be realized for some time. I didn't say stop progress, I said it might be dangerous. I made no calls to action other than caution.
Since you don't seem to agree that new technology can be dangerous, go play on the freeway.
@Gnillob802 It must be nice to live in your world, where you don't have to actually read anything, and you always win, even if the argument you won the opposing party never actually participated in. Even if you did prove me wrong, I'm not the baby. I understand how to form logical conclusions. And I threw no tantrums.
You still should go play on the freeway. It would do the rest of the world a lot of good. The only thing that's humorous is your inability to address any of the points I made. :-)
@Gnillob802 ""And I threw no tantrums." As he stomped his feet and pouted." Well, you called me a baby first. So in that case..."Waaaa! Waaa! I want my momma! I don't like this game!" Put me in my crib..oh, wait, it's too dangerous. I might get strangled! (it's a drop-side crib). Better? :-P
@SeungYeonFan Well, I'm not quite sure where I went wrong. I was merely pointing out that new technology can be dangerous. From there, Gnillob802 concluded that I stated we shouldn't have freeways, that I made some comment about Edison, Marconi, Bell and the Wright Brothers, and that I'm somehow a Luddite. How does "new technology can be dangerous" = "I'm a big baby and love to pout and I think we shouldn't have new technology?" I am irritated that he drew conclusions I did not support.
@Gnillob802 You're right, I did throw a tantrum. I was upset that I was trying to say new technology always has potential danger, and somehow you turned that into me being a neo-Luddite. It was my fault for letting you push my buttons. I apologize, Gnillob802. New technology is great, but recognizing the potential for danger is never a bad idea in my book. That is something completely different than outright rejecting new technology based on fear, something I never, ever condoned.
@BowlingCrony Wow, you see a flaw, you better contact Volvo and tell them their engineers couldn't anticipate something that you did, LOL. You really think they haven't anticipated that? Not everything is going to be explained on a You Tube video.
I understand the curiosity behind making autonomous cars as an engineering problem, but I think that the engineers have forgotten the most important part about driving. The appeal of the car is freedom. The ability to take yourself wherever you choose and however you want to get there. Ask any teenager... They'll tell you. Yes, this might be safer, and maybe even cheaper and more environmentally sound, but people don't give up freedoms easily. Just a thought
@rorcon One might be doing inspection work or repairs at different locations spread out, or they may have to visit multiple clients. Not everyone has the luxury of working at McDonalds like you do.
@OldemarFIN One might be doing work or repairs at different locations spread out, or they may have to visit multiple clients or make deliveries. Not everyone has the luxury of working at McDonalds like you do.
@Gnillob802 Well then, how fortunate for your kind of excuse of a person, who needs every bit of help to feel even slightly more important than you really are. Seeing how you have the time to make a plethora of comments on this video ranging from completely witless to plain inane and afterwards voting them up, I'd say you don't even have the luxury of a job.
Either that or you happen to be the butthurt dev of this trinket.
@Gnillob802 Aren't you smart... have fun walking to the grocery store for 20 minutes. I'll be there in 2. Technically I am using my two feet? called the gas and clutch pedal.
The one use I can see for self driving cars is getting home after a few beers... The biggest problem with this system is the legal side. If it all goes pear shaped and everybody wipes out, who is responsible when it goes to court? The truck driver? The computer programmers? The hardware suppliers? The drivers, who are actually passengers? That's why the lady said it'd be difficult to introduce. It would also eliminate the need for cool cars. Who needs 300 Hp at 56mph?? It sucks.
Theyll take everything that is fun to do (yes i find driving fun) just to make us "safer" and "more ecological" , soon we wont be able to go to the frikin toilet on our own cause we could fall in it and farts are destroying the ozone layer....
Seeing how eu works these days its an obvious step towards "automatic driving" , and no, options become forced on us, like the law that all new motorcycles are to be sold with ABS - i hate ABS in motorcycle's, eu is starting to look like us where even shopping bags need to have safety signs because some retard might sufficate him self.
Watching this video reminds me of the test Volvo did of their pre-collision system where the car is supposed to stop before hitting the object but hit the object anyway due to some sort of malfunction. I can only assume technology will still have flaws in the future years and then i can see this idea becoming not so smart...
@BMWBurnoutM3 I saw a few of those too. Epic fail... I work with computer controlled automatic machinery, and I'd make you about right regarding flaws. One bad sensor should do it, and before you know it your cornflakes are in your lap because the safety system throws the anchor out for you. ;-)
How can you be sure that the leading driver isn't falling asleep? If you can remove the, unpredictable, human factor then it would be a safe technology. Safety: The truck might not slip on ice, but the cars will pile up on ice while having hot cocoa on your lap, a flat tire
When the truck goes to a gas station, it will crash, you have a train in a way
run out of gasoline
What if a machinical problem exist
many safety issues
Car will take over "Yes, Dave" I will take you where ever I wish, you are now on dead drop zone.
Would be nice to have a mono rail on the side of the expressway and link your car to it!!! for us lazy drivers
