Requiem for a Dream is showing addicted fighting with this addiction.
The only addictive part in a depression, or in the song Lithium, is the small addictive part of this illness based on a lot of freetime being described ill, and feeling more alive than healthy people, if you're in a manic episode.
Manic episodes are sometimes so great, that you find yourself considering either it would be better to risk the depressive episodes for not losing the "will to fly" or "let you lay down" by the drug without the risk of falling into this endless hole again.
Sorry, but i think choosing the scenario of Requiem for a Dream is a grab deeeeep into the toilet... it's not always great what is combined of great ingridents ;-)
The song definetly is dealing with another problem than drug-abuse (neither they're prescribed or not).
A clinical relevant depressed person often is more likely to say "nah, i don't wanna take this shit, cause it makes me numb", but it's a rational decision to take 'em, made because you realize, that you loose any kind of motivation without it in the end.
thats crap.. i love amy lee.. and this song.. coming from someone who was taking lithium for years, (prescribed), i can say that this song is nothing shy of truth

drown my will to fly"

Medicine that calms psychological deseases mostly calms the entire emotional part of the patient, and that is what the song is about.
