You are my hero. I've been wanting to build my own server if possible and I absolutely want to do this. I have 2 old towers that do run, but aren't being used. Going for it.

@toapecur no you wont need a gpu to run a minecraft server its all cpu based since its cpu heavy

it's funny you mentioned hating installing amd stock fans i actually feel the same way but about intel ones with there push pins that make you think you are going to snap the board just installing them then the pins don't sit properly in there anyways

i have two intel and two amd systems and found the amd ones much easier

im have a phenom 2 x4 955 in my server with 8gigs of ram works smoothly wiht 4 vurtual machines on the background=)

Personally i wouldn't use AMD for a home server Just because of there small cache in comparison to an Intel CPU cache but if you've got a budget go AMD.

@toapecur minecraft will need a little GPU power, however the mobo i used had decent (ATI 4200) graphics which is all i needed.

@1domeso mine-craft doesn't not need a GPU all graphics are client side , the only information being transferred is block placement . (i have set up a mine-craft server before if you need any help just pm me)

you should make sure to ground yourself before touching the motherboard, it's fairly easy to fry components with accumulated static charge :P

Always sit your cases on a towel when fitting parts, prevents movement and damage to the case.
