You're right, negs are meant to be used very sparingly. And really the only good negs to use are not really "negs" by the popular definition. Teasing, yes. But it has to be congruent with your character and that takes practice. I prefer direct 'game' like Gary Brodsky's style that opens up her sexuality and doesn't play head games with negs and stuff.
