they were attitude with nothing inside.. any band doing thse renditions would have received the same applause. Anyone can do a blues song with a breakdown and rave-up. Yeah the guy could blow a harp, but so can almost anyone at the pub. Even the guys who had talent had enough sense to bail out and do something better. The Yardbirds seem to have the unique distinction of being the band that talented musicians were most likely to leave.Beck, Page and Clapton were not in the band at the same time..
But did anyone else in the Pub do what these guys did, when they did it? History has already spoken on this. The Yardbirds were ahead of their time, all the time. That is why we are watching their videos in 2010, and talking about them. How many of those other guys in the pub are immortalized in this way? None.
@80sVideoLord i think it's hilarious that people are viting this comment down. as if you said something vulgar. i guess that's what you're up against though: irrational hero worship. :)
@analogWeapon@80sVideoLord i think it is hilarious that you are commenting on such a silly post, it has nothing to do with hero worship more like a troll winding genuine viewers up with inane irrational comments showing absolutely no class just an incurable desire for attention whether positive or negative. the quality of the Yardbirds is shown by the size of their fan base, then and now
@rearly62 A comment is just that. Whether or not you agree with what 80sVideoLord said, you can clearly see that it was just an expression of an opinion that wasn't rude or overly offensive. I was just saying that I found it amusing that people were *voting it down*; As if it were so offensive it shouldn't be read or something. I opined that this was possibly related to feelings people have for the Yardbirds. And yes, I wanted attention. We can't talk if we're not paying attention to each other
@analogWeapon wasn't rude? this person took the TIME to find a Yardbirds video on youtube, LIE about their talents and then DERIDE them AND their fans in such a way DESIGNED to upset. he was not expressing an opinion he was trolling for effect. YOU think it is funny that aforesaid fans will vote it down calling it irrational. the behaviour of any true fan when confronted by such unrefined bias is not irrational it is the opposite and youtube is littered with such trolls.
@rearly62 I guess I can see how it could be considered rude to someone who attaches themselves to the band. I would consider it quite rude to say such things to the band members' faces, but that's not what was being done. If someone is offended by what he said, I guess they're fans. That silliness never really appealed to me. Same reason I'm not that into professional sports, etc. You made some good points. We just disagree somewhat.
Maybe I've gone crazy, but I could have sworn I saw one of the Shindig shows, and at the end the Yardbirds played "I Wish You Would" (which I think was mistakenly credited as "Early in The Morning"), and during the end of the song, Jeff was doing some cool guitar theatrics with three-note pull offs with his left hand while holding the guitar on it's end on the floor. Does that exist?
Paul Samwell-Smith was unfairly described as the 'square' in the band by surly Clapton. Maybe, but I always thought he was a great bassist and very important for the Yardbirds' sound.
when I saw Keith on this programme as a teen almost fell down from my chair, seeing this blondy, sexy guy with dark shades playing the harp so well.........
Maybe not, but he was already going steady with his future wife-to-be at the time... So I suggest, if by any chance you find a time machine, that you go back a bit earlier than the year '65!... ;-D
"Shortish, dark, brown-haired and plump! I don't like these slim willowy sorts. They have to be good conversationalists. I don't like them to be preoccupied all the time with mod fashions."
haha, well, I am 5'4" and I have dark brown hair, but I fall on the slim side! I could handle a good conversation, but I might become preoccupied by staring at HIM all the time!
Hmm...I think I could fit the bill. If he wanted me plumper, I could finish off all this left over Easter candy on my own. hahaha. ;)
Killer live version!!!! By the way, 'Psychotic Reaction' by the Count V is a total rip off of this song.

Clapton was a bit of a snob back in those days as he himself admits. Paul Samwell-Smith also was a pretty decent song writer too.
