May God Bless you dear Sister, I wish you a life of many blessings. How awesome to be a BRIDE OF JESUS CHRIST. Prayers for all your order, and I love the Habit.
I'm sure you've all heard this a thousand times, but I'll say it again: What a shame they remove themselves from the company and presence of men who might need them. Instead, these men have no one.
@cubano680 But they don't love men they love God. Really, what is this selfish, egotistical notion that men have in saying stuff like that? Don't you think the woman has a say in who she loves and wants to devote her life too? Do you think marriage out of pity for those lonely "men" you speak of is preferable to pursuing what's in one's heart?
@cubano680 On the contrary, the men benefit more from their "removal" - sisters are able to better dedicate their lives to prayer for ALL souls exactly BECAUSE of their isolation.
once i got the chance to stand beside 2 nuns in full habits.i was wearing jeans and n a headscarf, yet ppl stared at me as if i was oppressed and the nuns were people dedicated to god. im from a muslim country, have tons of muslim friends who dont wear a hijab, tons who do, i know nobody who was forced (im from southeast asia), and i definitely wasnt. i too felt some tugging in my heart to become closer to God, and wanted to please him. And still im not seen like someone dedicated to religion.
I don't like it that when Catholic women do this to commit themselves to God they're praised for their piety but when Muslim women do this they're called oppressed.
@verse1923 she's not a garden variety "catholic woman", she's a nun. common muslim without any religious titles women are forced into the burqa. BIG difference dude.
@verse1923 I don't like how when Muslims ask for recognition in society, they are praised for expressing their "cultural values", but when a Catholic asks for the same recognition they are "forcing their beliefs on everyone"
@PrincessaSophie lol Muslims aren't praised for expressing themselves and their values, we're discriminated against. And muslim women freely choose to cover. You've obviously never spoken to a covering muslim woman. If you look at global muslim demographics, you'll see that over half of all muslims live in Asia which isn't patriarchal. Covering is even being banned in certain "muslim" countries (Egypt, Turkey, etc) which is horrible. So women definitely aren't forced.
@verse1923 It takes little more than a google search to find testimony from Muslim women who, contrary to your claim, were indeed forced to cover themselves on pain of physical harm or even excommunication. Evidently not all Muslim women are forced to cover; I never said that.
And your logical fallacy of "Covering is being banned in some places, so women are not being forced" is intellectually painful to read. It doesn't invalidate the experiences of real Muslim women.
@verse1923 Ahaha, good one. If you are ever able to find such an account, do please note the date: probably hundreds and hundreds of years ago. This is interesting because of the uncanny ability of the Muslim world to emulate 7th century Europe. It is truly fascinating to observe a time capsule with so many people participating! =)
@verse1923 And you're apparently unable to engage in an intellectual dialogue without resorting to attacks ad hominem. Don't bother commenting if you can't take the heat, sister!
@PrincessaSophie An observation that it's sad you can't use Google is not an ad hominem. Last thing I'll say to you: "One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad." --Sheldon Cooper
@verse1923 I've read this arguement and the "burden of proof" falls on you to find the nun stuff, so put up or shut up. Aside from that I think that Muslim women who live in countries such as the U.S. (btw, I live within 5 miles of a Mosque) and wear veils are freely expressing their religion...but in Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc., they are automatically thought to be wh0res if they don't "cover up," and thus are forced out of fear instead love for Allah.
@verse1923 Additionally, it is not oppression because these women choose freely to become nuns. The vast majority of Muslims live in patriarchal societies in which they haven't any choice but to be "pious" because the alternative is physical harm from "well-meaning" male family.
@lovemesweetifyschat she is from the Georgetown Visitation Sisters. She's also on facebook as Hermana Anna if you would like to get in contact with her. God bless you!
@Maria33220, Georgetown Visitation has always been what's known as "semi-cloistered"...running their school has been part of their mission/apostolate since they were founded there in 1799. Some Visitation monasteries have schools and some do not; all are cloistered to some degree. The sisters in Georgetown only leave the monastery on school or community business - they're not running out to grab a cup of coffee or see a movie like communities that are considered mainly "active." Just FYI.
hmm here we go, another memeber of the public jumping on the band wagon with this issue. You are obviously a slave to the media and have no ability to think for yourself. Becoming a Catholic means accepting the correct doctrine of the Christian faith and being in union with THE Church.
@bigbittern Sorry to disappoint you - I'm not a member of any church. I do not support any form of religion because, contrary to your accusation, I have more than enough ability to think for myself and don't need faith as a crutch to hobble through life with.
You mean to say, of course, that you don't need faith, other than your faith that religious faith is based on illusions? After all, that would be the *logical* conclusion, if you are consistent in your reasoning...
You are making an assertion about faith, not a well-reasoned argument, and actually, not even an argument of any kind. The fact is, you have *faith* that religious faith is based on illusions. Certain religions may, indeed, be based on illusions, but that is no proof that all of them are so based. The problem is that you haven't offered *any* proof or arguments . Again, you have only made assertions. This tactic would earn you a failing grade in Philosophy 101.
@privetgreetings Faith is for people who THINK for themselves, and choose to Believe. As the Rush song goes: "if you choose not to make a choice, you still have made a choice." You think one way and don't believe; I, and most others, think and believe.
@privetgreetings just like school bus drivers and married men and a whole host of other males who are affected with this sickness, unfortunately there were the same percentage of Catholic clergy as are found in the general public victimizing children. Of course and anti-Catholic/Religion bigot like yourself will never get that. God grant you mercy when your arrive at your particular Judgment.
@burkardhanis Sorry, I'm not religious, so I can't be accused of going contrary to your teachings. Stop wasting your time praying and start DOING something constructive.

I've been a good girl ever since, and I still wear my jumper and blouse 20 yrs later. Ah, catholic education.

@johnbourbon No they are not forced in a modern country. And yes nuns choose to wear the habit but the tradition of the order will stand above them . very few religious wear the traditional habit any more.
Yes in many ways I feel safer in my Habit as Muslim women will feel that being covered gives a freedom unexpected. This is so for all my sisters be they Muslim or Christian.
respect is a very interesting thing. Easier to give when draped so elegantly. And often given simply because we are who we are.I think much has been lost for women.{This is my opinion}
