@Wharfomatic - I'd love to hear some more about them and see some more videos if you have them. that's great you knew them. those two, out of all members of the band or musicians during that period, are stand outs of two I would love to have seen, met, sat with, etc. that's truly a great treat that you knew them and are sharing what you have.
Wow, these are true gems. I saw The Band only once with the Dead in Syracuse the follwoing month in October. It was and still is one of the best nights of music I ever witnessed. Is this concert on DVD? I have a feeling you were at that Syracuse show too. You remember that set list?
Thanks for posting. PS I saw Levon yesterday at John Gill's farm :)
I was backstage with Richard the day before he died. The Band was playing a gig at Hialeah Race Track with Roger McGuinn. I'd known both Richard and Rick for a couple of years by then. There was nothing that even gave a hint that he would make the decison he did following his final show at the Holiday Inn in Winter Park the following night.
This is the first time I have seen this video, I sat here with tears running down my face, He was such an awesome musician, how lucky you were to have known him. I saw The Band several times, they are my favorite band of all time. RIP Richard, you are sorely misssed.
I think it's acually a pretty good performance--not as good as 1970 but much more fluid than I though. Manuel was better in the early 80s than he was from the mid70s-The Last Waltz; in any cases he was one of the all time greats.
pretty much perfection

Its too bad he had to be "released " in the way it happened. RIP Richard.

Richard Manuel, what a voice .... a shame that he took his own life.
He is obviously fragile at the time of this recording.
Rest in Peace.

I met Richard Manuel pretty much at the time this performance took place. You could easily see how fragile he was.

Ai, he can't reach the high vocals anymore.. there's a much better live version on youtube from 1970, from the Festival Expres..
